The count of currently active wikis can be retrieved from:
http://community.wikia.com/api.php?action=querylist=wkdomainswkto=100wkcountonly=1wkactive=1
You can download the list with queries like the following, in at least two
batches:
http://community.wikia.com/api.php?action=querylist=wkdomainswkto=50format=json
(this one is 14 MB).
