No progress :( I have not been able to reproduce this yet. I'll poke at the
relevant code a bit, clean it up, and write tests. Perhaps I run into the issue
while doing that.

Any progress on this? These phantom log entries are happening on a daily basis,
and it makes the logs nearly impossible to use (and make for a very confusing
watchlist).

In many cases, it looks like log entries for other courses are created and
*not* the expected log entry for the affected course.
