There's a lot of speculation on this. Can we objectively state the issues
around Expressing Thanks in a profile and record them on the discussion page
for Global Profiles?

Thanks for bringing this up Kunal. It is something that we thought about very
briefly when we added this feature to the User Profiles. As Steven has
mentioned thanks are not explicitly private, but they are implicitly between
two users. Now this was a decision that was made consciously, but the purpose
of thanks is to increase collaboration and engagement between users, if it
serves that purpose to make thanks more public then we may evolve the framing
of that feature. However, it does make sense to think about it as we go in so
that is something that we will do over the coming couple weeks.

As Steven mentioned there are some options we have and this feature is only in
beta now so we have room to make changes and will keep you in the loop on these
conversations.

I should point out that it's not strictly private, in the sense that you can
look up who thanked me, via something like
https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special%3ALog&type=thanks&user=Steven+Walling&page=&year=&month=-1&tagfilter=

However, we have made a design decision not to make thanks publicly prominent,
in order to make people feel comfortable thanking each other liberally. There's
not 100% agreement about the way thanks works, internally at the WMF or within
the community, so Jon's not alone in his feelings by any means. But it was a
conscious choice made by Fabrice, Kaldari, Vibha, and all those involved with
designing thanks. I support it fervently because they made this choice in order
to accomplish a design goal: getting people to thank each other *a lot* and not
hesitate to do so.

They were successful with that, and we shouldn't second guess them in hindsight
based on principles or ideology. This is similar to the decision to disallow
anonymous editing on mobile for now: you can argue this violates our ideals and
is outside the norm, but we did it in a special circumstance in order to
accomplish a goal (mobile editing) that is now doing very positive things for
the encyclopedia and for the Wikipedia community.

I think Kenan from the mobile team is going to comment more, but just FYI we
discussed this and agreed we should do something, though it's not hugely urgent
because mobile structured profiles are linked to in Beta only, AFAIK.

The reason the mobile team experimented with showing Thanks is A) they didn't
know it was supposed to be private B) they want a way to show positive
connections between editors.

We discussed a few compromises, with two distinct possibilities:

1. we remove thanks entirely for now
2. we remove the article edited, saying only "Last thanked by Foo", which
doesn't expose the article and edit the user was thanked for.
