TASK DESCRIPTION
  In order to facilitate unit conversion, we need the configuration array that 
contains rows with the following:
  
  * Unit Q-ID
  * Primary unit Q-ID
  * Unit name in [[ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GNU_Units | GNU Units ]]
  * Multiplier from this unit to primary unit (from GNU Units)
  
  Example:
  
  | Q253276 | Q11573 | mile | 1609.344 |
  | Q11573 | Q11573 | m | 1 |
  
  Primary units will have first two items the same and 1 as the multiplier. 
  
  The full configuration file should be generated by the script from the 
user-editable config that contains only three first items.

We have export formats - CSV, TSV, JSON, etc. (look for "Download

In addition to the multiplier, we need at least an optional offset (for °F to 
°C conversion) and perhaps also an exponent (for reciprocal conversions like 
miles/gallon to liter/100km). Both can come from GNU Units.

Current proposal (derived from 
https://etherpad.wikimedia.org/p/Wikidata_Meeting_Berlin_10262015) and attached 
pictures, is:

- Each property can have primary standard unit
- If the current unit can be converted to this unit, it is listed as decimal
- Otherwise, if the unit is not "1", it is listed as `"1234"^^wdu:Q1234`, where 
wdu:Q1234 is defined as:

  wdu:Q1234 rdfs:subclassOf xsd:decimal, wikibase:measuredBy wd:Q1234

The `wdu:` units are generated on the first use and there will be a mechanism 
preventing (or reducing if full prevention is too expensive memory-wise) their 
duplication.

On English Wikivoyage I just made a minor edit to 
https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Template:Pagebanner which should hopefully force 
a cache purge for all pages using that template.  It seems to have done the 
trick for the handful of pages that I checked - 
https://en.wikivoyage.org/wiki/Culver_City showed the problem earlier this 
morning but is displaying correctly now.

Yeh if it is in Common.js delete it from Vector and mobile as otherwise it will 
run twice (bad! ) :)
It will take time to see the results.

Essentially all the code does is this:
check if the toc is 1
if it is purge the cache.

No `1` should be generated as of Wednesday. I'm still not exactly sure how this 
started happening but the bug was in the code from the day it was deployed and 
seems to impact older pages.

decided on filling them in at production time. To me it seems that filling in 
either at production or consumption time will work, as long as defaults don't 
change. It sounds like you have a concern in that area, though. Could you

Actually I had an idea...
Add this code to MediaWiki:Mobile.js and it will purge existing pages when the 
problem is encountered (e.g. crowd source purging the cache where needed)

my thinking was mobile traffic was less so less traffic would hit purge urls 
but actually on second thought Common.js would probably make more sense but be 
sure to remove it if you notice any slowdown on the site and as soon as the 
problem goes away (I'm not yet sure of the scale of this problem and how many 
pages it impacts). On other bug it seems editing the template may help too!

Do we have any dates around or before year 3400 BC that are know with day or 
less accuracy? In fact, in years 3000 BC and below, there are only two dates 
with precision of 9 (year) and one with precision of decade, and none with more 
precise dates. In fact, I do not think it is possible to have dates with higher 
precision for such years in either of the calendars we are currently converting 
(Gregorian and Julian), since I can not see where such precise dates would be 
coming from.

So I think we'll be fine.

Hm, I don't think this is true.  You will need some understanding of what a 
historical dataset is, but that's all.  The historical datasets are going to be 
made up of many revisions of the same schema.  January may have data validated 
with schema revision 1, and February with schema revision 2.  If you don't know 
which exact schema-revision an event was validated with, you will have a hard 
time reasoning about what the data looks like.  This will be especially true if 
we are attempting to do Avro conversion.

Sorry about this :( It should be fixed now (see discussion in other bug) but we 
have no way to clear cache.  It might be possible to ask operations to purge 
html but I suspect that might be too costly an operation...

TASK DESCRIPTION
  We have a problem with the recently deployed extension WikidataPageBanner. It 
is supposed to show a bottom line with TOC. But some of the pages contain the 
TOC line with symbol "1" right under the banner and the standard Wikimedia TOC 
on its regular place before the first section. This problem is solved by 
purging the cache, but it happens way too often. Yesterday I have noticed it at 
least 15 times. Purging of the cache had temporary effect, and the problem 
appeared again after 1-2 hours, even though no edits were done to that pages.
  
  Today we tried to track the problem and arrived at rather confusing results

  We identified several pages where the problem appears:

  but it does not appear for all users. For example, I don't see it when I am 
logged in, and I see the problem when I log out. 
  
  Altogether, this became a frequent and annoying problem that needs to be 
solved. Wrong performance of the pagebanner extension has huge (and 
unpredictable) influence on the appearance of Wikivoyage articles.

Now I have it in Mobile.js and Vector.js. Should be enough, while adding the 
same line to Common.js will be redundant, right?

I have edited the template right now and also earlier this morning, but as far 
as I can see this did not help.

Producer A has schema version 1. 
Producer B has schema version 2, which has added field "name" with default 
"nonya".

All of these events are being imported into Hadoop.  An analyst looks at the 
latest schema and wants to do some analysis on "name".  They write a job to 
query the data in Hadoop selecting the "name" field.  The data produced by 
Producer A does not have a "name" field.  The analyst gets key errors and their 
job fails.

The phrase "Gregorian ISO value" requires further consideration. For example, 
does it mean an ISO 8601 compliant value, or the strings currently in use which 
resemble ISO 8601 but permit a number of violations, such as 
"2015-**00**-**00**T00:00:00Z"?

Also ISO 8601 requires the Gregorian calendar, which is a solar calendar based 
on counting actual sunrises and sunsets. For events in the distant past, most 
astronomy and other science is based on constant-length seconds such as 
produced by an atomic clock (see the Wikipedia article "Delta T". The 
difference between these two approaches grows to a full day about the year 3400 
BC. Thus ISO 8601 is not fit for use in prehistoric times.

But really, even if we fill in defaults during production or consumption, this 
will still be a problem for historical data.  Data is only consumed into Hadoop 
once, and schema changes can happen after consumption time.   If you have no 
way of associating a particular historical event with a schema, you won't be 
able to fill in defaults properly for missing keys.  Avro solves this during 
binary deserialization, by filling in the defaults from the reader's schema.

We can't avoid this problem with JSON Schema, but we can make it easier to deal 
with with by having a built in mapping from an event to a schema.

Events will be consumed into Hadoop close to production time (within an hour 
usually).  Schema changes made years after the fact cannot be reflected in 
years old historical data unless it is reprocessed and rewritten.

TASK DESCRIPTION
  It is time for the next step in Wikipedia-Wikidata: after creating an article 
or category being asked in a pop-up or new screen (etc) if already an article 
about this subject exists in another Wikipedia, if yes: way to connect it to 
that article, if no: let user add it to Wikidata + help to add some basic 
properties (instance of, if human: gender + birth/death dates (etc), if taxon: 
scientific name (etc), etc).
  
  Too many times users forget to add articles to Wikidata, even while there is 
an existing item for it. This results on large workloads for other users in 
checking if subjects already exists, missing properties, etc, while a simple 
pop-up would help to remind the creator and makes it easier to do this.
  
  Having articles and categories added to Wikidata is a convention, a basic 
guideline that applies to all articles and categories for many years (earlier 
as requirement to add interwikis at the bottom of the article).

We have "universe" (Q1) which displays the start date as "
13798 million years BCE Gregorian" (Gregorian is a superscript). But the 
furthest back one could possibly extrapolate the proleptic Gregorian calendar 
was the first time the Earth rotated on its axis, which was much later (around 
4,540 million years ago, measured in constant length seconds). So the date 
stated for the start of the universe in wikidata is false because the calendar 
was undefined and beyond any plausible extrapolation procedure at the time of 
the event.

@ottomata: If you fill in the defaults at consumption time, then you have a 
choice of how you want to treat old events. You can either fill in the defaults 
from the latest schema (probably what you want in most cases), or choose to 
explicitly distinguish fields that were not yet defined at the time the event 
was produced.

[Wikidata] Next step in the development

Hi all,

I think it is time for the next step in the Wikidata development: a better
integration in Wikipedia and her sisterprojects.

Every day thousands of articles are created, and many of those are not
added to Wikidata, even while often an item about this subject exists.
Users forget to add a newly created article to Wikidata as there is no
stimulus at all. The next step in Wikidata development is that after the
creation of an article, users get a message (pop-up, or screen, etc) in
what they are asked to add the article/category to Wikidata. In the first
stage this can be just a pop-up with a message. But it would be better if
this can be a message + some help to do this, so that users can stay in
Wikipedia (or another project), without having to go to Wikidata.

A further step that can be developed after is the suggestion of properties
(if missing), like instance of, and based on this entry further properties.

This will make sure that there is a better integration of Wikipedia and her
sister projects with Wikidata through this workflow.

TASK DESCRIPTION
  Special:Nearby is cool, but it seems that it will only load things near where 
your computer claims to be (if there is already a way to change it, I haven't 
found it). I would find it more useful if I could change the location it's 
using:
  
  - I assume it doesn't work at all if your browser doesn't support the 
geolocation stuff, or if you don't allow it to provide your location.
  - If the coordinates are inaccurate, you end up with items near a different 
point, not near you, e.g. for me, the closest item is around 3 km away, even 
though I know we have plenty of items which are much closer to me.
  - If you want to share the results with someone for any reason, you can't, 
e.g. some of the images look bad, but if I try to link you to it, you'll see a 
different set of items and therefore different images.
  - You might want to check what is near a different location, e.g. near your 
home when you're away from home or near a place you're planning to visit or 
have just been.
  - Only being able to see one set of results limits how much you can do with 
it: Once I've added labels, descriptions and images for the 50 things it shows, 
I can't do anything else.
  
  Maybe something like a line at the top saying something like "Showing items 
near [current coordinates]" would work, with a "change location" link or button 
which expands a section or opens a popup where the user can change the location.

without any unit.

For what I understand, unit conversation should also be possible without known 
uncertainty?

For counted values, there is another bug, 
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T68580, which proposes a new "amount" or 
"number" datatype. The bug here is for how to correctly handle values that may 
have uncertainty. This should be more clear once

Just to add... today I hacked up a script that adds a "nearby" (globe icon)
button that is displayed at the top of items that have coordinates.

Click on the globe and it takes you to Special:Nearby which then shows
articles near that item (instead of your location).

For now, the script only works in the desktop view/mode.  I'll have to look
into how this could be added in mobile view also.
