I believe this is about being notified when something on wikidata.org changed that might affect a local article you are watching. With this in mind, here are some possible icon ideas:

• A puzzle piece would be nice, because what changed is literally one of the pieces the article is made of. But puzzle piece icons are used way to often.
• Just a "D" for data.
• Meta data is often visualized with a label or badge.
• When searching for "piece" I find chess pieces as well as a piece of cheese and cake. Might be an idea.
