TASK DESCRIPTIONComing out of a quick conversation between @Jdforrester-WMF and @ArielGlenn, we need to determine what if any specific work is needed to adjust the dumps for Commons. This is not for immediate decision and execution – we don't have to climb the whole mountain at once – and indeed is blocked on work to determine what data will exist (e.g. virtual properties). Binaries – Already done; any changes expected? Wikitext – Already done; will continue, changed via T198706 SDC data – Raw JSON will come along as part of T174031 This will get us the raw content of the slot, but what more do we need to do, if anything? We'll need to dump local properties, presumably. (Are there going to be any local non-media items?) Can virtual properties be ignored (and caculated on import like EXIF), or will they need exporting? Is it OK to ask people to grab the Wikidata XML or entity dumps to use with the Commons dump? Will users demand a special de-referenced walk of Wikidata from Commons properties? What about recursion? (Oy.) Will users want a separate sort of 'commons media info' weekly or bimonthly run with information specially formatted for folks working with media file meta-data? On eqiad, db1099 and db1101 should already have the proper data. I think it would be more surprising to have the same SHA1 for two different (in any way) revisions than it would to have a SHA1 that reflects something other than the SHA1 of the primary/historical content field. So I guess I like the revision-level reflecting the hash of all parts of the revision. Addshore added a comment. So, this ticket was created specifically for allowing entering time values with second precision on wikidata.org and it should probably (i guess) remain just for that. Having second precision time values on commons does not mean wikidata has to have them. As said in T57755#4639411 the underlying value object being used already supports second precisions. Just wikidata has them turned off. If commons uses the same validators as we use on wikidata.org then second precisions will not work. The svwiki page was edited to be about another item and then the sitelink was removed from Wikidata. I turned the cebwiki page into a redirect and then remove the sitelink from Wikidata. Another example: For https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q22950526&action="">, I also edited the cebwiki page to turn it into a redirect and then removed the sitelink from Wikidata and it still lists cebwiki as being subscribed. It seems that in other situations, the subscriptions are being removed: https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q27728384&action=""> does not list svwiki. The svwiki page was deleted which caused the sitelink to be removed. https://www.wikidata.org/w/index.php?title=Q27221100&action=""> does not list svwiki either. Not sure if this is the right ticket for this information, but I'd like to note strong interest on two different occasions from two different people in the last month in a top-tier GLAM that I'm working with, about the possibility of being able to use Commons as an IIIF hosting service for high-resolution images, eg for serving tiles of old maps for geo-referencing to platforms that need to be able to access images from an IIIF service. The GLAM is quite strapped for cash (or, at least, the relevant departments are), and they can get a much more affordable deal from the georeferencing platform if they can arrange their own image hosting, rather than having to copy all their images to the georeferencing company. If we could offer this, that would significantly strengthen the business case within the GLAM for releasing best-quality high-resolution versions of their images to WikiCommons, rather than lower-resolution degraded versions -- a subject of significant current discussion and dispute within the organisation. A couple of pre-requisites for this would be (i) the ability to offer a stable and fast IIIF service with strong reliability, and (ii) the ability to offer IIIF access to a particular revision of an image -- because any subsequent cropping or rotation or rescaling by a Commons user, however well-intentioned, would totally throw out the pixel-referenced georeferencing data. BTW, I note that the current pilot service appears to be down again T206260, and has suffered from recurrent corruption problems T194956. Presumably (as the original ticket suggests), one option would be to set up a Commons Data Query Service (CDQS) as a distinct endpoint on a new server that had both Wikidata and CommonsData installed in a Blazegraph instance locally. This would allow the existing WDQS service to continue without alteration, while allowing the CDQS service set-up to be optimised, as we learn more about the sort of queries that people want to run. One further desideratum I would like to suggest is that (IMO) it would be very useful if the CDQS service also had access, ideally as triples, to a representation of the category structure on Commons. I can see a lot of potential interest in querying being done to compare information on how a set of files are categorised (perhaps all the files in a category or group of categories) with CommonsData for that set of files, and what those categories could be understood to represent as described by the statements on sitelinked Wikidata items (where available). Both CommonsData and the Commons categories would benefit from the possibility of easy creation of queries with a view to synchronising information between the two.
