That seems to be unnecessarily arbitrary. People could also want to configure 
per namespace or whatever.

That would mean that this is not actually configurable, since you can only use 
what your factory knows about. Also, it makes stuff hard to understand, since 
you have to use a format that's used nowhere else, has arbitrary limits on 
flexibility and is probably not going to be documented too well.

I pulled in a wikidata dump to our hypothesis testing cluster a couple weeks 
ago, but haven't done anything with it. It contains 18.8M documents so should 
be pretty much the whole thing.

With the train rolling forward i don't see any reason we can't push things into 
prod. For figuring out what options should be used in rescoring the 
hypothesis-testing cluster might be a better bet.

The cluster is estest100{1,2,3}.search.eqiad.wmflabs

I think you underline exactly my point.

The size of the two final solution sets is very similar.  Per the query above, 
there are currently 345,221 category-items with a 
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/P373; whereas according to Autolist 
(CLAIM[31:4167836] AND LINK[commonswiki]), there are currently 340,027 
category-items with a Commons sitelink.

In fact, the total number of Commons sitelinks (680,000) going into the join is 
rather less than the total number of https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/P373 
statements (1,240,000).

But the first query is *much* slower because those 680,000 Commons sitelinks 
are not easily accessible.   Instead to get there the system has to try to do a 
join with the set of all 46 million sitelinks, then join again with the set of 
sitelinks in English (7.7 million), which it then has to filter to get the 
sitelinks to Commons, rather than en-wiki or en-wikisource.

So it's not surprising that it is far far slower than it would be if relations 
were available like

  ?item wikibase:hasSitelinkTo wd:Q565

Now I know very little about the internals of Wikibase, so I don't know what is 
specific to Wikidata compared to what is generic to Wikibase (or Wikibase 
coupled to a generic MediaWiki installation).

But at least for Wikidata, and the Wikidata UI, it does seem that the set of 
available destination sitelinks is very narrowly controlled, so it would not be 
too hard to keep track of a list of corresponding items in the Wikibase.

I think doing that would have significant advantages for us.

But if another installation was not keeping such a list, then it would be easy 
enough to set a flag that it was not available, so no "wikibase:hasSitelinkTo" 
statements would be being maintained, and that other installation would be no 
worse off than we are already.

However, as I understand it, the list of available projects that can be 
sitelinked to is pretty fundamental in Wikibase, with special code to handle 
the addition and removal of such sitelinks and reflect them in external 
database tables, so it should not be too hard to add a routine to have them 
reflected in the triplestore too.

@Jheald Perfect.  This works, even with adding optional it runs in 10 seconds.  
Yea, definitely outputting the statements is unnecessary and adds a lot of time.

Conclusion:  Faceting the namespace by property (and avoiding unnecessary

  The first query has 2M triples matching, but the second one only 300K, so not 
the same sizes. Also, the second one does join for two relationships, while the 
first one works on the same `?item`. So that may explain the difference.
  
  Introducing wikibase:hasSitelinkTo would require to figure out the following:
  
  - How we group the sitelinks? Sitelinks are just URLs, so how we know the 
"https://commons.wikimedia.org/"; part is special? What if it links to 
"https://blah.wikiblah.org";?
  - How we ensure each sitelink has a group to attach to and that group has its 
own Wikidata entry?
  - How we know the Q-id of that group when generating the dump?
  
  Please note that Wikibase codebase is generic, it is not specific for 
Wikidata, so each Wikidata-specific functionality has to be configured (e.g. 
like badges are configured).

Yeah, 13 min queries is not really the best idea I'm afraid. Also, `?wds a 
wikibase:Statement` should not have worked on query.wikidata.org since it 
strips those (see 
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Wikibase/Indexing/RDF_Dump_Format#WDQS_data_differences)
 but can be run from raw dump of course. In fact, you do not need the "a 
statement" part since only statements are ever on the right of p: predicates 
anyway.

I also don't think distinct is needed in the last query since having the same 
reference twice it pretty rare I think. And, "OPTIONAL" part may be omitted too 
maybe since if you enumerate all statements and then remove the ones with 
non-zero counts, you get the ones with zero counts (e.g. MINUS operator could 
do it).

With these modifications, query like:

In general, the query service may not be very suited for queries that require 
touching whole or significant part of the database, they will be slow. Going 
over 300K+ entities one by one has to take some time.

@Jheald Thank you for your suggestions.  What is fairly clear in my research is 
that counting type queries on large (or undefined ranges) with an unbound 
domain are just not possible (without huge resource consumption) when the 
namespace contains millions and millions of triples.  For example, the

  PREFIX prov: 
  
  SELECT (COUNT(DISTINCT ?stmt) AS ?count) WHERE {  
 ?stmt prov:wasDerivedFrom ?ref 
  }

will not work, even with no query timeout.  I have tried it on 
http://wdm-rdf.wmflabs.org and it uses all of the 8GB heap spaces and crashes 
Blazegraph.  Of course, there are ways to use SPARQL to post-process/filter 
manageable result sets (in memory) as you suggest, but this seems not possible 
for the 800M+ triples in wdq.

By introducing an "arity class property" (like "hasNullReference"), the 
evaluation on **all** data, can be achieved with minimal processing overhead 
because the query range is a boolean value and not a variable like "all 
references" .

Adding 2 drives (or SSDs if we have them) and extending the LVM VG seems easy

- Statement sections should be configurable.
- Statement sections should be configurable per entity type.
- Configuration should not contain PHP code, such as callback functions.
