Since Wikidata's early days it had been possible to use Wikidata's interface in languages other than English. However, dates have so far been half-localized by substituting the month name with the month name in the target language without localizing the date format string.

This results in major inconvenience to users of languages where the date format string is not "d Mmm " or "Mmm d ". In many cases the partially localized dates make no sense to a native reader.

This task requests that language-specific format strings to be applied when Wikidata displays any date. Until that is implemented, incomplete localizations should be reverted to an international date format (e.g. 2012-10-29) for languages that do not use a "d Mmm " format string,

TASK DESCRIPTIONNow Wikibase daily browser tests run using Souce Labs. And they randomly fail for reasons not related to the code but related to Souce Labs API. See T152963 Increase in failures caused by Saucelabs for details.

As soon as randomly failing tests are worse than no tests at all, we (Wikidata team) would like to have another daily job running those tests but on Jenkins (without using Souce Labs). Hopefully they will be stable.

These are very welcome test cases. Thanks a lot for submitting this ticket!

The answer for both cases (and many more, e.g. the issue in T131625) is the PhpDateTimeParser based on PHPs build-in date-time parsing we are using as a fallback.

The second example ", 1966" is completed with the current month, day, and time, and results in "+1966-06-08T15:39:06Z". This is blocked by our validator because we don't accept date values with a time of day.

The first example is because "Sept" is not an abbreviation our parsers know about, but PHPs build-in parser obviously understands it. Unfortunately PHP doesn't tell us the precision.

There are already many heuristics in place in the PhpDateTimeParser, e.g. see https://github.com/DataValues/Time/blob/master/src/ValueParsers/PhpDateTimeParser.php#L98. Unfortunately I can not think of a simple fix for the "Sept" example. The solution I would like to see is us getting rid of this parser, and replace it with our own. We already have Norman under the (completely incorrect) code nrm and T25216 is asking for the existing Norman Wikipedia to be moved from that code to nrf. If that happens, I would expect Wikidata to also switch to using nrf for Norman. nrf explicitly covers both Jèrriais and Guernésiais and possibly applies to the other mutually intelligible varieties too (might be worth asking the ISO 639-3 RA for clarification). This file isn't really used atm.

The place to configure the view would be https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/source/operations-puppet/browse/production/modules/role/templates/labs/db/views/maintain-views.yaml

I would say to expose this we would need:


@daniel to say yeah let's do this



A sign off (just a comment really) from #security saying cool this really doesn't expose anything extra or untoward



A DBA to ensure the data is good to go on the labsdb's



A mod to the above maintain-views.yaml file



An Opsen to run maintain-views update on the labsdb hosts :)

I've downloaded all the scripts that present in the former list and analyzed them manually here summary of the analysis.

Total: 58 scripts

Discovered use cases:


Check only for existence of wbEntity: 11 scripts
Check only for existence of wbEntity.sitelinks: 10 scripts
Use wikibase.datamodel: 2 scripts
Overwrite wbEntity string value with object (parsed JSON) value: 1 script


All scripts use wbEntity for read only except:


MediaWiki:Gadget-DuplicateReferences.js (not totally sure because it uses wikibase.datamodel)
