yeah looks funny :) Definitely the edit box should not go RTL.

Also I see that tooltips on the vertical toolbar are on the wrong side for RTL, the submenus appear off-screen and the "Run" arrow arguably points the wrong direction.

On the results submenus alignments are weird - while icons appear (probably correctly) on the right, the menus are still aligned to the left, which creates very chaotic view. Same for the top toolbar menu - icons on the right, alignment to the left.

Also, tag cloud display in examples is kind of messed up - parentheses show up in wrong place.

TASK DESCRIPTION(read the title from right to left)
When using Hebrew interface the query textbox is with RTL direction. However, the query is SPARQL query and should ALWAYS use LTR direction whatever is the interface language.

How to reproduce:

Expected - All elements should swap direction (good!)
Expected: The direction within elements having LTR content should be ltr. Actual: query-editor-container have RTL direction. (bad)

I thought something like that. So, that means that the "trigger" could be a casual page view, when the links tables are updated wrong way?

I would point to one thing which is particulary interesting: if I remember correctly, when this error occurs, every Wikidata entry on the page is affected and every time the same Lua error message is displayed. just to add API POV: when using API for purge, it is important to use forcelinkupdate to get the "strong" purge, in our case, one can purge 50 pages in the category using 1 API call:

CHANGES TO TASK DESCRIPTIONMost Indic-language sites and Commons, which use opensearch for search queries, appear to process characters such as ढ़, য়, ਖ਼, and ଡ଼—note that these are combined, i.e. //not// already decomposed into a consonant and a nukta—appropriately when they are present in search queries, returning appropriate suggestions. (The bolding of the text within the search suggestions corresponding to what was typed does not appear, but that's not quite as troublesome of a matter.)

Wikidata's search functionality, wbsearchentities, returns the proper JSON response given a search containing the aforementioned characters, but the results are not rendered properly at all. In particular, the warning "//The value passed for "search" contains invalid or non-normalized data. Textual data should be valid, NFC-normalized Unicode without C0 control characters other than HT (\t), LF (\n), and CR (\r).//" is attached to the results. This causes either 1) the waiting icon to remain indefinitely, if it is a new search query, or 2) the previous results to remain, if it is a modification to another search queryIt appears that all of the characters I have mentioned are part of [[ http://www.unicode.org/Public/10.0.0/ucd/CompositionExclusions.txt | this list of characters excluded from composition per the Unicode Standard ]], and that they [[http://www.unicode.org/Public/10.0.0/ucd/DerivedNormalizationProps.txt | cannot ever occur in their respective normalization forms]]—if that information is in any way helpful.

CHANGES TO TASK DESCRIPTION...This does not appear to be an issue with all characters for which a decomposition exists in the Unicode standard, as searches such as "Cañada" (where the "ñ" decomposes into "n + U+0303") do return suggestions properly, without any warning attached to the JSON response.

If you have certain user preferences set, you see the page parsed according to your preferences but that result does not necessarily correspond to the state of the links tables. @Lea_Lacroix_WMDE @Lydia_Pintscher This is live now, and can be announced: all units that had a conversion factor defined on July 1st now support unit conversion. This is not highly visible, since we currently only use unit conversion for RDF export. But it means that you can now specify a length in nautical miles (Q93318), and you will be able to find it with a query for things longer than x meters.

This will definitely require a breaking change to the API output format, but I’m not sure what the new output will look like. We need some way to address a snak, regardless of where it appears:


as the main snak of a statement (currently: entity ID / property ID / statement ID; suggested: that plus "mainsnak")
as a qualifier of a statement (suggested: entity ID / property ID / statement ID / "qualifiers" / property ID / hash)
as part of a reference of a statement (suggested: entity ID / property ID / statement ID / "references" / hash / property ID / index)


The reference snaks are the weirdest part, because apparently they don’t even have hashes – only the full reference (which can contain several snaks) has a hash.

The schema suggested above is similar to the JSON format, but mainly differs from it in that it uses the statement ID or snak hash as keys into objects instead of using lists. The callers are removed, but the implementation of setId() still accepts integers, and we still have tests using that. @Ladsgroup, can you look into that? This should be fixed for Item, Property, Lexeme, and MediaInfo.

The wikibase-datamodel will need a new release - technically, this is a breaking change, so it should go into the next major release. I don't see a reason to do a major release just for this, though... Do we have a marker for "next release needs to be major"? TASK DESCRIPTIONWikibase has various API modules and Special pages that modify entities in different ways.

To ensure consistent handling of validation, permissions, edit conflicts, etc, all such API modules and special pages should follow the same pattern:


Check user input
Construct ChangeOp(s)
Pass ChangeOps to EntityModifier.
Report the outcome to the user (resp client). This would be quite different for API modules and Special pages.


EntityModifier is a new class to be introduced. It's conceptually similar to EntitySavingHelper, and it would contain an EditEntity interactor. EntityModifier shall have the following responsibilities (beyond the ones covered by EditEntity):


check ChangeOp specific permissions
apply validation
modify the Entity object
construct a summary
save the new version of the entity
report the outcome (probably using a Status object)

I would argue that there is a lot of value in keeping 2 fields.


the second field labeled as units makes it obvious to a user that units can (and should?) be provided (could even show an error state highlighting that field if no units provided)
it gives a specific area for feedback to be given to a user. For example: a mistyping of "mm" instead of "m" could be highlighted for the user in the second field in an understandable way (by showing that it will be interpreted as millimeters and not meters in this case).
if we ignore the copy paste use case for a moment, having a second field shouldn't add any keystrokes to the process of entering a value since the place where one might enter a space in "10 m" would be replaced by typing the tab key. (This based on the premise that typing 10m is incorrect which isn't necessarily a good argument if users do it anyway)


If we come back to the case of a copy paste, a potential way of making that work in a 2 field case might be to capture a paste event and parse it into both fields if there are characters in it. 
It could be a cool accelerator for power users without sacrificing the parts of the two field system that are important to less advanced users. Here's a gif showing what I'm talking about.

Reverting to high. The only reason the dispatch queue is catching up is that the Wikidata administrators asked bot operators to reduce their operation. Once the bots resume again, we might get the same problem (in fact, I’m a bit afraid it might be worse if everyone starts again at the same time, trying to catch up on their own week of backlog as fast as possible).

TASK DESCRIPTIONSome conversion factors between units (particularly historical units) are approximate. The unit conversion facility should know about such uncertainties, and take them into account when converting between units (just like it takes into account the uncertainty of the values that get converted). Doing so will allow us to support (approximate) conversion even for historical units that have no exact conversion to SI units (e.g. Q214377).

Implementation note: On Items that describe units of measurement, the conversion factor is given by Statements about property P2370. The Quantity value associated with the Statement can already represent an uncertainty.
