Open questions: # There might be places where the information is currently being JOINed against the other tables (API query modules?), we need to look into that and see how hard it would be to do that programmatically. # How many writes are currently happening on the tables? Can that (plus an order of magnitude?) more easily be sustained if the tables are separate from the main wiki databases? Question 1. is for the Wikidata team to answer, while 2. probably needs to be answered by a DBA. TASK DESCRIPTIONIf search label matches in different language (e.g., you search in English but Spanish label matches), the highlighter does not return anything, because it checks only English matches and label_all matches, and for some reason label_all matches do not work for highlighter. Since highlighter does not return anything, we can not display the result, and the match is dropped from the results. If we replace label_all with label.*, highlighter finds the label, but can not tell if it's label or alias, because we fetch only English labels. Showing the target page title is not very helpful. Instead, we should show the entity ID and the disambiguation description. This would allow users to easily see that a link to Q821229 refers to Berlin, ND, not Berlin, German. TASK DESCRIPTIONChangeDispatcher has various options governing batch size, dispatch interval, lock retention, etc. These settings are designed to allow a tradeoff between optimization through batching and acceptably low delays until changes are processed on the client wiki. This tradeoff however strongly depends on the size of the client wiki (or rather, the number of entities used on the client wiki, and the number of edits to those entities on the repo). However, with the current setup, we have to find a compromise between good settings for large wikis and good settings for small wikis, leading to situations like T171263: Wikidata Dispatcher and Job Queue is overflowed. To allow us to optimize for both large and small client wikis, we should be able to run dispatchChanges cron jobs with different settings for different groups of wikis. Yes, a dedicated database service for this could make sense to separate writes if tracking changes starts taking most of the database writes. I suggested this as a means to offload some of the load if it starts to become a problem- but I do not know what are the needs in terms of joins and all, so this would be a nice topic to research. @hoo, I think @Manuel got a bit alarmed because he may start to think you are requesting right now infrastructure, as you added the #DBA tag (which normally we just use for actionable tickets/requests). I had a look at it with @hoo and he pointed out that the module could probably be optimized using new functionality to not grab the whole entity, but only the needed parts. The module is used on almost every file page so making it more efficient is probably worth it. Just talked with @daniel about this, we have to figure out fallback. Due to this different label usages (L.lang) will be registered for a page depending on who visited it since it was last touched (see https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki-extensions-Wikibase/blob/master/docs/usagetracking.wiki for details about why this is).
All labels are potentially relevant (as they can be used depending on the user's language) for the page and changes to any single one of these can affect the rendering of the page for certain users.
Due to this, I suggest to track all labels as used in this case:
This will make the entity usages for a page more stable and not depend on who has visited a page since it was last touched (as much).

I thought about this and I came up with the few possible TempldateData solutions:
Wikidata map (see T69659 just appear above). and then we can handle it either in the frontend or backend:
Backend
Once we have such, we can add Hook in extensions/TemplateData/api/ApiTemplateData.php with CreateTemplateDataResponse - letting other extensions override the templatedata response.
In extensions/Wikibase/Wikibase.hooks.php handle it by iterating the map and generating ['default'] value for the TemplateData (e.g the default here is dynamic).
Frontend
VE should treat it in modules/ve-mw/ui/dialogs/ve.ui.MWTemplateDialog.js - this requires uglifiying the VE code (adding Wikidata specific binding code to more general code), and requires the client side to query the RepoApi for the actual values of the wikidata. I tried to create POC for it and realize this is probably bad idea...
Note: In the long term solution, we may want tight integration of WD in VE template allowing to edit WD - but this is not in the scope of this task but rather https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Wikidata:Client_editing_prototype so I would rather avoid depending on it
(ab)use default with values such as default: '{{#property:P123}}' for parameters. With or without parsing:
Without parsing - this is the current behaviour of TD and doesn't require any code changes. This may be somewhat meaningful even for pages not yet connected to wikidata (e.g "this parameter may be auto filled once connected to wikidata")
With parsing - Requires TD to call parser for default (and do it dynamically - not on TD save as it is page dependent). While requires the page to be already connected to wikidata, it is more meaningful (e.g show the actual data from wikidata rather then some wikisyntax for fetching wikidata). Note this requires also adding new page parameter to the TD api so it will know the context for parsing
