[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T257726: Move the warning about not being logged in on Wikidata closer to the property being edited

2020-07-11 Thread AlexisJazz
AlexisJazz created this task.
AlexisJazz added a project: Wikidata.
Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.

TASK DESCRIPTION
Like many users, I've been trained to ignore anything that happens in my
peripheral vision and when appropriate, deal with it later. Notifications,
mentions.. Sadly "dealing with it later" is not really an option when it comes
to accidentally spilling your IP after having been unexpectedly logged
 out
.
As a result, I had to bother a Wikidata sysop to remove my IP.

I don't appear to be alone as @Adithyak1997 requested a banner to be shown
with a warning
,
and it's probably no accident that Adithyak1997 is most active on Wikidata.

I have attached screenshots of the current warning placement and a proposal.
(this is just an edited screenshot, no code) Also note that on smaller screens
the ToU and license pop-up can largely cover the warning about not being logged
in.F31924340: wikidata login warning current.png

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T206392: Redesign rank icons for better visibility

2020-07-11 Thread MichaelSchoenitzer
MichaelSchoenitzer added a comment.

I would like to see the ordering being implemented and I share the doubts on
the use of colors. But I want to point out that just sorting the values by rank
will only solve half of this problem. It will make it easier for people to see
which statements have the highest/lowest ranks – but the other (in my opinion
bigger) problem is new/sporadic editors and data users often don't know about
the existence of ranks and don't notice the small, hardly different, icons and
therefore wrongly remove or modify data. In my opinion the ordering will likely
not improve this situation.

I see also an UX related potential issue with the sorting coming up: so far
the order of the elements is from oldest (top) to newest (bottom) added values.
This results that in most cases the values are sorted from the oldest on top to
the newest at the bottom. There are also a few scripts which change the order
to ensure this sorting. On the other end, I would assume that implementing this
sorting by rank would put the items with the highest rank to the top and the
values with the lowest rank at the bottom. This would create an inconsistent
order.
  Example:
We currently have the following values:
  1 2 3 4 5 6 **7** **8**
where bold means higher rank. The new order would be:
  **7** **8** 1 2 3 4 5 6

//Disclaimer: This is my private opinion as a member of the Wikidata
community and not related to my employment at WMDE. //

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T257722: Add optional batch size environment variable

2020-07-11 Thread Andru
Andru created this task.
Andru added a project: Wikidata-Query-Service.
Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.
Restricted Application added a project: Wikidata.

TASK DESCRIPTION
I'm working on a Wikibase containing floristic data where updates can be very
large. The default batch size of 100 leads to Java heap space errors `Exception
in thread "main" java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: Java heap space` for which the
recommended approach seems to be to reduce the update batch size.

Unfortunately there's no way to do this in the configuration to the image, so
I've worked around it by building the `wdqs-updater` service from the local
Dockerfile rather than the image, and modifying runUpdate.sh to pass the batch
size from an environment variable specified in the `docker-compose` config:

  **runUpdate.sh**

./runUpdate.sh -h http://$WDQS_HOST:$WDQS_PORT -- --wikibaseUrl
$WIKIBASE_SCHEME://$WIKIBASE_HOST --conceptUri
$WIKIBASE_SCHEME://$WIKIBASE_HOST --entityNamespaces $WDQS_ENTITY_NAMESPACES -b
${WDQS_BATCH_SIZE}

  **docker-compose**

wdqs-updater:
  build:
context: ./wdqs/0.3.10
  restart: unless-stopped
  command: /runUpdate.sh
  depends_on:
  - wdqs
  - wikibase
  networks:
default:
  aliases:
   - wdqs-updater.svc
  environment:
   - WIKIBASE_HOST=wikibase.svc
   - WDQS_HOST=wdqs.svc
   - WDQS_PORT=
   - WDQS_BATCH_SIZE=25

It'd be great to see this make it into the image. I'd be happy to prepare a
small pull request (or whatever the terminology is on Phabricator) if it's a
desirable change.
