[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T250559: Add de-1901 as a language code for lexemes

2020-09-14 Thread Mbch331

  It's blocked by T254968 . I
refactored the code for extra languages a bit and it's easier to make a patch
when I can base on that code.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T262856: Investigate indexes of wb_changes

2020-09-14 Thread Marostegui
Marostegui added a comment.

So a quick look (this needs to be taken with care) reveals that some of them
are indeed unused:

root@db2091.codfw.wmnet[sys]> select * from schema_unused_indexes where
object_name='wb_changes';
+---+-+---+
| object_schema | object_name | index_name|
+---+-+---+
| wikidatawiki | wb_changes | wb_changes_change_type|
| wikidatawiki | wb_changes | wb_changes_change_object_id |
| wikidatawiki | wb_changes | wb_changes_change_user_id |
| wikidatawiki | wb_changes | wb_changes_change_revision_id |
+---+-+---+
4 rows in set (0.054 sec)

My advise would be to drop these on an active slave and see if we see
performance regressions.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T260728: too wordy Wikidata Bridge dialog when direct editing is not supported

Hi, Charlie. Then congratulations on the good work; despite the doubts I'm
raising here, I think the interface is very well thought out.

  >> Omit either the description ("At the moment […] cannot be edited because
it contains more than one value") or the title of the error ("Editing multiple
values is currently not supported") when they both communicate the same idea
with a similar level of detail.

notices and error messages.

  *zips his mouth*

  > That being said, I’m happy to adjust the text to make it less redundant. I
will be looking into this as part of a small round of fixes we can make to the
bridge. If you have any suggestions in mind yourself, feel free to let me know!

For example, would it be possible to include as a title a first sentence (the
consequence), and as a description another sentence (the cause), as if they
were contiguous sentences in the same paragraph?

  //**The car has stopped.**//
(Or "you can't edit this directly from Wikipedia.")

//We have run out of gasoline.//
(Or the reason why you can't edit this directly from Wikipedia in this
particular case, without repeating that you can't do it.)

Although I'm sure there will be better options…

  >> Avoid showing the text "Edit the value on Wikidata" twice (both in the
explanatory text and on the button).
  >
  > I’m happy to explain my decision here. From a UX point of view it makes
sense to add some redundancy here. The reason being that the best practice for
button labelling should clearly indicate the action the button will perform.
The explanatory text should also be exactly that, an explanation of the option.
Removing it here would defeat the purpose of the text. It could be possible to
change the text a bit so the sentence doesn’t exactly repeat, but that would
mean that now we put a burden on the editor, to bridge the gap between the text
and the button label, to realise that that is in fact the action the text is
talking about. Navigating a UI is already a hindrance, because the way the
editor thinks will never be exactly along the lines of how the system works and
how the UI communicates it. Reducing any room for misinterpretation is key.
Sometimes that comes at the cost of redundancy.

I'm not sure I understand this part. Why is the explanatory text necessary
when it says the same thing as the button and it has to do it with the same
words?

  >> Omit an explanation ("Depending on the template used, it might be possible
to overwrite the value locally using the article editor") that does not help
the user make a decision: it does not indicate whether, in that case, the value
should be defined locally or not, and it does not explain how to do it.
  >
  > The reason why we didn’t include instructions here is because our goal is
simply to let editors know of their options, not provide tutorials on how to
follow through with them. Same goes for the first option, to edit on Wikidata.
If the editor chooses to edit the value locally, which is something we do not
encourage, it is up to them to make sure they make the edit compliant with the
rules of the wiki. I do not believe that informing of options also requires us
to explain how to make the edit.

I agree; I wasn't referring to a tutorial, but to the fact that indicating
that the option to edit locally "might be possible" (or might not be) just
doesn't provide much value to the user in my opinion, and actually the two
options might (or might not) be possible or applicable in different
circumstances. That's why I imagined there was a particular motivation
underlying that text that had been thought out but perhaps not written down.

  >> Consider converting the second suggestion's hyperlink into another button.
This button could have the same format, or a less eye-catching one (e.g., white
background), to show it is a less preferred option.
  >
  > We chose to go with a link here because It is common to either use links or
buttons to help the editors navigate inside the Wiki. Since we want to
discourage editors from editing a value locally, we chose the least intrusive
option for that action. Making it a white button, would draw more attention to
it than we’d like to, even though it would be less than the first button.

  Okay.

  >> Move the text "If at all possible, we recommend that you instead add the
value to Wikidata via the button above" to the first suggestion, as it is not
related with the second one. Consider rephrasing this suggestion in fewer words
(e.g., simply write "(recommended)" next to the first button or suggestion).

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T262856: Investigate indexes of wb_changes

2020-09-14 Thread Ladsgroup
Ladsgroup created this task.
Ladsgroup added projects: Wikidata-Campsite, Wikidata.
Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.

TASK DESCRIPTION
While doing T205094: Investigate and restructure SQL directory, and use new
MediaWiki abstract schema change features
 I realized structure of wb_changes
is this
:

CREATE TABLE IF NOT EXISTS /*_*/wb_changes (
change_id INT unsignedNOT NULL PRIMARY KEY
AUTO_INCREMENT, -- Id of change
change_typeVARCHAR(25) NOT NULL, -- Type of the
change
change_timevarbinary(14) NOT NULL, -- Time the
change was made
change_object_id varbinary(14) NOT NULL, -- The full id
of the object (ie item, query) the change affects
change_revision_id INT unsignedNOT NULL, -- The id of the
revision on the repo that made the change
change_user_id INT unsignedNOT NULL, -- The id of the
user on the repo that made the change
  change_infoMEDIUMBLOB NOT NULL -- Holds
additional info about the change, inc diff and stuff
) /*$wgDBTableOptions*/;

CREATE INDEX /*i*/wb_changes_change_type ON /*_*/wb_changes (change_type);
CREATE INDEX /*i*/wb_changes_change_time ON /*_*/wb_changes (change_time);
CREATE INDEX /*i*/wb_changes_change_object_id ON /*_*/wb_changes
(change_object_id);
CREATE INDEX /*i*/wb_changes_change_user_id ON /*_*/wb_changes
(change_user_id);
CREATE INDEX /*i*/wb_changes_change_revision_id ON /*_*/wb_changes
(change_revision_id);

It seems all of indexes are complete random sense of "each column will have
an index" (because why not). I'm pretty sure most of these indexes are not used
at all and we can drop them. wb_changes is rather small but it's a pretty
heavy-write table (twice of ratio of edits) so cleaning up the indexes would
make a big difference in replication (also we can turn the ones that are used
to covering index for faster read/write)

I add our DBAs to check if they can confirm the hypotheses. This table only
exists on s8.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T205094: Investigate and restructure SQL directory, and use new MediaWiki abstract schema change features

2020-09-14 Thread Ladsgroup

This is mostly done, All tables are migrated except two:

  - wb_terms, it has some complexities (float data type) that is not yet doable
in abstract schema. We can wait for core to implement it (which hopefully
happen in a month or two) or just wait until we remove wb_terms altogether.
  - wb_changes_dispatch: It's waiting for timestamp data type getting handled
properly in core (https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/mediawiki/core/+/626854)

Once these are done, we should clean up the file names but that's easy.

was wrong, and I wouldn't know what to choose. In this situation people might
choose arbitrarily (if they didn't have much time) or they might feel forced to
ask about the consequences of these decisions and about Wikidata's policies on
when to add values and when to replace them.

was a mistake, then choosing the first option “correcting” would be correct, if
the unit has changed then the “outdated” option would be the correct one to
pick. Can you clarify?

I'm thinking of the scenario where the reader doesn't consider the original
value to be incorrect or outdated but wishes to reflect a more precise/complete
value. For example, they want to change "musem" to "history museum", or
"cancer" to "prostate cancer", or "Berlin" to "Friedrichshain". In any case,
this will hopefully be resolved with the possible rewording (the addition of
"less […] complete or precise").

  >> First I thought of population figures for a municipality, the number of
employees in a company… mainly of quantities, but I think this would apply to
any other data type. If I read that a village has a population of 432 according
to the infobox, but I have just checked that today there are 276 inhabitants
according to an official source, I know that the value from the official source
can be considered correct now, but I don't know if the previous figure was
correct at some point in the past or not. It seems to me that this situation
will occur often, as normally we don't know the full history of anything and we
can't rule out that a value may have been correct an unknown number of years
ago.

be overwritten if it had no qualifiers or references, and preserved if it had a
reference or a qualifier (in this case, the new value should have a preferred
rank, and the original value should be downgraded to normal value if it had
been marked as preferred). But this is only my opinion, and I know it's a mess;
when in doubt, adding the value might be the lesser of two evils. (?)
  >
  > That seems like a reasonable conclusion. Is there something that would stop
you from doing exactly that in the bridge? Currently we can not display
qualifiers unfortunately, but references can already be viewed. What you said
about the lesser evil makes a lot of sense to me. Maybe you’re suggestion of
putting the “outdated”-option first, would serve a second purpose. People will
more likely select the first option when in doubt.

Great point, I hadn't thought of that. :-)

The implementation is probably complex in Blazegraph (accessing results not

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T262837: SDC statements should record entity usage for wikidata entities used in statements

2020-09-14 Thread Jarekt
Jarekt created this task.
Jarekt added a project: SDC General.
Restricted Application added a subscriber: Aklapper.
Restricted Application added a project: Wikidata.

TASK DESCRIPTION
Wikidata entities used in file description wikitext are currently recorded in
entity usage
table. Similar wikidata entities used in SDC statements are not recorded. For
example File:Seneca_Rocks_climbing_-_13.jpg infopage

in "Wikidata entities used in this page" section has a link to Seneca Rocks
(Q7450337) because infobox template
pulls the label from that entity, but links to other depicted entities like
Traditional climbing (Q2214812) is
missing when similar label is pulled by SDC tab.

This observation was made by @Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE in T237899

Within Wikidata, the software could discover all the affected pages through the

affected pages that need to be edited. (MediaInfo statements don’t seem to
automatically record entity usage

used in statements; compare the page information for a Test Commons file with
one statement
.)

Purging pages on Commons affected by changes on Wikidata is a ongoing issue.
See for example T173339 where pages
on Commons are not purged when wikidata items they link to are updated. But you
are right that files on Commons do not seem to keep track of entities they are
connected to through SDC statements, the way they keep track of the same
entities linked through lua calls originating from file description wikitext.
For example File:Seneca_Rocks_climbing_-_13.jpg infopage

in "Wikidata entities used in this page" section has a link to Seneca Rocks
(Q7450337) because it is linked from
infobox template, but links to other depicted entities like Traditional

only shows up in SDC tab. That is a problem.

@Pablo-WMDE and I looked at it and here is what we found so far:

  - The difference for someone with a Babel box is likely due to the fact that
with a Babel box the language is put into the preferred languages and gets
rendered server-side. Else it falls into the "in other languages" section and
gets rendered client-side.
  - The difference in spelling/capitalization seems to come from a mismatch in
use of CLDR and ULS. We want it to use the data from
https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki-extensions-cldr/blob/bdb642e46abe38ee198eeb12994f8ce177054425/LocalNames/LocalNamesEn.php#L45
but it is using the data from
https://github.com/wikimedia/jquery.uls/blob/master/src/jquery.uls.data.js#L860
We could reproduce similar behaviour for fkv. Potentially also relevant is the
place where we define these special languages:
https://github.com/wikimedia/mediawiki-extensions-Wikibase/blob/master/lib/includes/WikibaseContentLanguages.php

Charlie_WMDE added a comment.

Thank you for your extensive reply!

  > Thank you for the explanation. The risk I see in having two such opposite
and assertive options ("incorrect", "was not correct and has never been", etc.)
is that, in the grey area, or in case of doubt, users might end up choosing
randomly, and that, from what you say, might not be ideal because it would have
consequences on how values are finally reflected.

We see your point here. We carefully considered only having two options,
rather than more, because the danger of having multiple options is of course
that people wouldn’t know which one fits their case best and would also pick
randomly. We’re currently considering adding some sort of explanatory text, to
help in the situation of doubt.

  > Okay. Then the description might be incomplete; for example, if I change a
territorial administrative unit to a lower one, I wouldn't consider that the
previous value "was not correct and has never been". I personally would think
that I would have improved the original value, but not that the original value
was wrong, and I wouldn't know what to choose. In this situation people might
choose arbitrarily (if they didn't have much time) or they might feel forced to
ask about the consequences of these decisions and about Wikidata's policies on
when to add values and when to replace them.

I’m not sure i understand the scenario correctly, but i would think, if it
was a mistake, then choosing the first option “correcting” would be correct, if
the unit has changed then the “outdated” option would be the correct one to
pick. Can you clarify?

  > First I thought of population figures for a municipality, the number of
employees in a company… mainly of quantities, but I think this would apply to
any other data type. If I read that a village has a population of 432 according
to the infobox, but I have just checked that today there are 276 inhabitants
according to an official source, I know that the value from the official source
can be considered correct now, but I don't know if the previous figure was
correct at some point in the past or not. It seems to me that this situation
will occur often, as normally we don't know the full history of anything and we
can't rule out that a value may have been correct an unknown number of years
ago.
  >
  > As to what the related action should be... in my opinion, the value should
be overwritten if it had no qualifiers or references, and preserved if it had a
reference or a qualifier (in this case, the new value should have a preferred
rank, and the original value should be downgraded to normal value if it had
been marked as preferred). But this is only my opinion, and I know it's a mess;
when in doubt, adding the value might be the lesser of two evils.

  > I am going to make some suggestions gathering all this together:
  >
  > - **The order of the options could be changed** so that the most specific
or less ambiguous option ("I updated") appears first. This might let the user
know that the wording of the second option is no longer covering the first case
("I corrected" does not include updating, because that option has already been
mentioned).
  > - "I updated an outdated value / The previous value used to be correct but
now is outdated."
  > - → "I updated **the (or "a")** value / The previous (or "original")
value **may have been** (to cover the doubtful case) correct but now is
outdated."
  > - "I corrected an incorrect value / The previous value was not correct and
has never been."
  > - → "I corrected **or completed the (or "a")** value / The previous (or
"original") value was **less** correct**, complete or precise**."
  >
  > These are just my suggestions, feel free to adapt or rule them all out if
they aren't useful.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T260728: too wordy Wikidata Bridge dialog when direct editing is not supported

2020-09-14 Thread Charlie_WMDE
Charlie_WMDE added a comment.

Hi Abian, I am the designer working on the Bridge. Thank you so much for your
constructive feedback! I will try and respond to each of your points.

  > Omit either the description ("At the moment […] cannot be edited because it
contains more than one value") or the title of the error ("Editing multiple
values is currently not supported") when they both communicate the same idea
with a similar level of detail.

We are working within the constraints of WMF styleguide, in this case for
notices and error messages. This means the structure should be kept of having a
heading for the error message and the description. We chose to stick to the
styleguide in this case particularly, because we wanted to ensure that the
bridge blends into the look and feel of the visual editor as seamlessly as
possible, since this feature lives on Wikipedia. That being said, I’m happy to
adjust the text to make it less redundant. I will be looking into this as part
of a small round of fixes we can make to the bridge. If you have any
suggestions in mind yourself, feel free to let me know!

  > Avoid showing the text "Edit the value on Wikidata" twice (both in the
explanatory text and on the button).

I’m happy to explain my decision here. From a UX point of view it makes sense
to add some redundancy here. The reason being that the best practice for button
labelling should clearly indicate the action the button will perform. The
explanatory text should also be exactly that, an explanation of the option.

The reason why I chose to include this information in the second bullet
point, is because it is here that I want to nudge the editors to reconsider
option 1. I think it makes sense to put this information in the spot, where the
reader might be considering option two, which is in the explanatory text of
option two.

  > Indicate the name of the parameter in quotes, in italics or with other
style differences to avoid it being confused with the rest of the dialogue,
especially when the name is made up of several words (see screenshot).

This is a very good point and something that was also addressed here T261103
. We’re working on a revision where
the datatype will be more distinct from the rest of the text to avoid such
confusion in the future.

If you have any questions or would like to discuss a topic further, please
let me know! And thank you again for taking the time to share your feedback!
It's very appreciated.

I think it is great that KrBot delays updating redirected items as we do have
a lot of bad merges, by either vandals or incompetent editors and unmerging
items is a mess. I did propose to create some tool for undoing merges as simple
as merges, see T237262 . If merge
and un-merge operations were build into wikibase system than the system would
be able to track all the changes which were done in the merge (possibly using
an edit group ) and can
undo all of those. In such a case there is no need for the delay KrBot uses.

Restricted Application added a project: Wikidata.

TASK DESCRIPTION
As a user I want a shortest possible downtime for WCQS in case of data
reload, so that I can continue using that.

  Proposed solutions:

  - Feed the second blazegraph instance, switch journals afterwards
  - The same but with two namespaces (single instance of Blazegraph)

Category reload happens this way already.

Switch can also happen via nginx.

  AC:

  - data reload doesn't trigger maintenance page
  - data is available after reload.

  Hi @lucamauri,

Thank you very much for taking the time!

  > Am I right in understanding that you are setting up things like this last
case? Meaning you have a single MediaWiki instance (based on a single database)
with WikiBase Repo and Client installed and enabled?

Yes if there are no arguments against this solution, that will be fine.

  > It seems to me you also have an issue with the sites configuration: I think
the filepath should be
  >
  > --filepath=https://muwi.epfl.ch/w/\$1

In order to correct this, I performed a `TRUNCATE TABLE` on `sites` and
`site_identifiers` to then run

php addSite.php --pagepath=https://muwi.epfl.ch/wiki/\$1
--filepath=https://muwi.epfl.ch/w/\$1 --language en --interwiki-id en en
musewiki

  Now, on the SetSiteLink page,
I get the error

  counterexample
The site ID "en" is unknown. Please use an existing site ID, such as
"enwiki".

Any ideas as to how to proceed from here? I'm back from vacation so will be
quick to reply. Thank you in advance!

Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE added a comment.

Furthermore, from a technical perspective I doubt it’s even possible for
Wikibase to update statements on Commons when items on Wikidata are merged.
Within Wikidata, the software could discover all the affected pages through the
pagelinks table, but on Commons I don’t know how Wikibase would even find the
affected pages that need to be edited. (MediaInfo statements don’t seem to
automatically record entity usage
 for entities
used in statements; compare the page information for a Test Commons file with
one statement
.)

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T237899: Wikidata item ID changes caused by merges do not update entities on Structured data on Commons

2020-09-14 Thread LucasWerkmeister
LucasWerkmeister added a comment.

Note that KrBot only updates statements pointing to redirects after a certain
time has passed (a week, I believe). This is by design: otherwise, it would be
more difficult to “untangle” bad merges, since after undoing the merge on the
item itself, you could not distinguish between statements that should now point
back to the original item and statements that always pointed to the other
(merge target) item.

This is less of a problem nowadays, since we have edit groups
 and KrBot assigns an edit
group per processed merge (and you can undo the entire edit group); on the
other hand, edit groups are a Wikidata-only tool (compare T203557
), so on Commons you would still
have this problem of being unable to untangle bad merges.

I have trouble imagining Wikibase automatically updating references to
redirects after such a long delay, though.

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T229939: Use wikidata entity selector in OOUI input field

2020-09-14 Thread thiemowmde
thiemowmde added a comment.

@Physikerwelt, sorry for not responding earlier. My advice is: don't use
jquery.wikibase.entityselector. Write your own code, ideally based on OOUI, not
jQuery. Seriously. It's your code then, and it does exactly what you want,
which isn't that much. The existing entityselector code appears complicated,
but it really doesn't do much. All it essentially does is querying the
wbsearchentities API. There is a bit of caching on top, and a lot of
configuration you probably don't need.

The probably only configuration you need is the address of the API, because
you want to query the Wikidata server from e.g. the English Wikipedia. On wikis
with WikibaseRepo enabled this is exposed to JavaScript as part of the `wbRepo`
configuration, see \Wikibase\Lib\Modules\RepoAccessModule. You might need to
expose this configuration yourself on your special page (but only on the
special page). This can be done directly in the special page's class using e.g.
\ResourceLoader::makeConfigSetScript().

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] T229939: Use wikidata entity selector in OOUI input field

2020-09-14 Thread Physikerwelt
Physikerwelt added a comment.

I am still confused. Are there no other situations where one needs to select
a Wikidata item in Wikipedia? For instance, if one wants to connect a page with
its Wikibase item. At one time there was an "add links" button that you could
click and then a js popup came. Now it redirects to wikibase on beta
https://en.wikipedia.beta.wmflabs.org/wiki/Selenium_Echo_link_test_0.9941241391257276_0.9941241391257276

However, besides there must be uses of that.
