  I still find myself very confused by this task and imagine that others might 
be struggling as well.
  
  I'll try to pick up the thread from before and continue to ask clarifying 
questions.
  
  - The authoritive source for describing items is Wikidata.org.
  - The authoritive source for describing the constraint checks is also on 
Wikidata.org.
  
  What is the authoritive source for executing a constraint check if all caches 
and secondary services were empty? I believe this is currently in MediaWiki 
(WBQC extension), which may consult WDQS as part of the constraint check, where 
WDQS in this context is mainly used as a way to query the relational data of 
Wikidata items, which we can't do efficiently within MediaWiki so we rely on 
WDQS for that. This means to run a constraint check, WDQS needs to be fairly up 
to date with all the items, which happens through some sync process that is not 
related to this RFC. Does that sound right?
  
  Speaking of caches and secondary services, where do we currently expose or 
store the result of constraint checks? As I understand it, they are:
  
  - Saved in Memcached for 1 day after a computation happens.
  - Exposed via action=rdf, which is best-effort only. Returns cache hit or 
nothing. It's not clear to me when one would use this, and what higher-level 
requirements this needs to meet. I'll assume for now there are cases somewhere 
where a JS gadget can't affort to wait to generate it and is fine with results 
just being missing if they weren't recently computed by something unrelated.
  - Exposed via Special:ConstraintReport/Q123, which ignores the cache and 
always computes it fresh.
  - Exposed via API action=wbcheckconstraints, which is the main and reliable 
way to access this data from the outside. Considers cache and re-generates on 
the fly as needed, so it might be slow.
  
  It's not clear to me why Special:ConstraintReport exists in this way. I 
suspect maybe it is to allow for an external service to be a cache or storage 
of constraint check results without having to worry about stale caches, so it's 
bascially exposing the computation end-point directly. That seems fine. What 
are those external stores? I think that's WDQS right? So WDQS is used for 
storing relational items, but also for storing constraint data. If so, why not 
use that as the store for this task? (Also, how is that currently backfilled? 
Are we happy with that? Would a different outcome to this task result in WDQS 
no longer doing this this way?)
  
  I suspect the reason we don't want to use WDQS for this is that you want to 
regularly clear that out and repopulate it from scratch, and ideally in a way 
that doesn't require running all non-memcached checks again which presumably 
would take a very long time. How long would that be? And how do we load these

  Having public dumps of these seems valuable indeed. Is this something that 
could be dumped from WDQS?
  
  Responding to the main RFC question - using a permanent store logically owned 
by MediaWiki and populated progressively seems like a better direction indeed 
and would make sense. I'm not seriously proposing WDQS be used for this, rather 
I'm trying to better understand the needs through asking what it isn't serving 
right now.
  
  Assuming a store will be needed, how big would the canonical data be in 
gigabytes? What would be the expected writes per second from the job queue for 
this. And the expected reads per second from the various end points?
  
  Could it have a natural eviction strategy where MW takes care of replacing or 
removing things that are no longer needed, or would it need TTL-based eviction?
  
  Depending on the answers to this, using Main Stash might work for this. Which 
is essentially a persisted and replicated cache without LRU/pressure eviction, 
which sounds like it would fit. This is currently backed by Redis and was until 
recently used for sessions. This is now being migrated to a simple external 
MariaDB cluster (T212129 ).

https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/operations/puppet/+/646888 that addresses a 
different manifestation of this same issue with `blazegraph_lastupdated`. 
Currently it looks like we'll want to switch `blazegraph_lastupdated` from a 
`Counter` to a `Gauge`, but I need to figure out if changing the metric type 
will break the behavior in `updateQueryServiceLag.php` or elsewhere.

  There's some context in the description of 
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T269204 that mentions that the counter metric 
`blazegraph_lastupdated` is now `blazegraph_lastupdated_total`, so if 
the`mediawiki_job_wikidata-updateQueryServiceLag`  job has to do with that 
metric then the re-image is likely the source of the problem

job works specifically but that would make sense

then that might be a bit unexpected because only one node in each `dc x 
[internal, external]` is being re-imaged at a time

wdqs-internal host that would be unable to report and one codfw external wdqs 
host

availability, it's "one of the mediawiki maintenance 'crons' (that are now 
systemd timers) failed to run on the maintenance servers
[20:26:03]  ryankemper: what happens is: "maintenance job 
tries to update what the current lag is like.. tries to get lag data from 
prometheus and that fails.  now since it's a systemd timer and not a cron it 
means it's a failed service which then turns into an Icinga alert about 
"systemd state is bad on a mwmaint server". and nothing clears it.. but this 
job runs every minute.. so it's more alert than 
[20:26:09]  is appropriate
[20:26:35]  let me just clear that failed service and wait 
a minute
[20:27:14]  !log mwmaint1002 - systemctl reset-failed to 
clear icinga alert

  The the list of all "hanging items"  - items with no `P31`, `P279`, or `P361` 
value - relative to what was found in the `2020-11-23` version of the hdfs copy 
of the WD JSON dump, of course, is too large to be shared here. A `zip` archive 
will be shared with you via email or Google Drive.

  There are separate styles for MobileFrontend, but... while those use space 
far more efficiently than the desktop styles, I understand they may also be 
missing some tools/affordances, and there's no reason not to expand to use the 
space if it //is// there (tablets, for instance, or someone loaded the mobile 
site on desktop/is using it for some other reason than just mobile).
  
  Basically, both the desktop and MF styles should probably just be replaced 
with a single set of actually responsive styles. Then we won't run into 
problems for folks using other skins, or even just regular desktop skins 
without a lot of space. (MonoBook and Vector in particular can have 
particularly narrow content columns due to the sidebar, for instance, even when 
they're otherwise on still generally usable smaller desktop/tablet resolutions.)

  Well, what I did was the following:
  
  - Apache Spark to parse the most recent JSON dump
  - single out all properties with the English label satisfying the simple 
regex `number_of`;
  - the list is attached, columns:
- **id**
- **language**
- **label**
- **usable**: `0` means "not usable" for the purpose of this task, `1` 
means usable, `1/2` means "maybe, but..."
- **comment**: typically accompanies the `1/2` value on usable.
  
  If you take a look at my comments in the **comment** column, you will see 
that not too many properties of this form can be used in accordance with the 
idea in our example:  *properties that can be used to check completeness (e.g. 
"number of children" + "number of participants")*. We have a property for a 
number of people arrested in an event, for example, but... Do we have anywhere 
represented all such people by QIDs in Wikidata so that we could check for 
completeness? I don't think so.

  But the code is already using PHP 7.1 nullable types, as spotted by phan in

Perhaps it's time to bump the requirement to PHP 7.2+? Or is these some good 
reason to keep it at 5.5, and we should remove PHP 7 features?

worked

  Yes, I suggest to make it translatable. One might want to localize this as 
"1/1 of a second", or something like "1/10.000 Sekunde" in German.
  
  It appears like the Geo library was heavily changed in 2019. I can't tell how 
much the precision detection changed as well when this happened. I found a bit 
of code that limits seconds to at most 4 decimal places, i.e. 0.0001 or 
1/10,000.

  I don’t think this belongs under T213803: [Tracking] Request for new 
constraint types  – it’s not really 
a new constraint type, but rather a new kind of constraint metadata (closest to 
constraint scope , and in fact we 
could reuse that property) that could apply to any constraint type.

  The code for Ngémba is missing.
  
  Sepedi, also known as Northern Sotho, is already supported with the code 
`nso`.
  
  Pullar (`fuc`) and Fulfulde (`fub`) may be already supported with the `ff` 
code. If this is not OK, then perhaps this can be added, but I'd like to hear 
this directly from someone who knows these languages.
  
  The rest are good to go.
