A few points: - there are no Wikimedia mirrors for the Debian security repos for any version, and that's the recommended practice by the Debian folks. So no issue there. - our version of cloud-init doesn't know about the new naming scheme, which is why we get the wrong source entries - the latest version of cloud-init DOES know about the new naming scheme but, weirdly, this version of cloud-init doesn't ship with bullseye even though bullseye needs it at this point @Dzahn chimed in to point out that prod has correct templates for handling sources.list for bullseye and busted. This led us around to T264311 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T264311>, the neglected goal of unifying prod sources.list puppet manifests with cloud-vps. So, I was bold/reckless and pushed ahead on T264311 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T264311> which has also resolved this issue. I don't love that we have a cloud-init-determined sources.list for the first few apt actions and then a slightly different sources.list subsequently, but as far as I can tell it's harmless in practice (and mostly unavoidable.) Andrew added a comment. Just a note about these dedicated hypervisors: I've downtimed the disk space alerts on all cloudvirt-wdqs hosts. This is to avoid getting an alert in the scenario where the VM image has grown to 'fill' the physical raid even when the VM volume itself is mostly empty. That means that if the wdqs people want to know about running out of disk space on your VMs you'll need to implement some kind of monitoring that does checks inside the VMs; the hypervisor alerts themselves wouldn't be especially useful. Andrew added a comment. This flavor was broken mostly because it asked for way too many cores (as well as slightly to much RAM). I've adjusted it as needed and things should be working better now. Note that due to a different snafu (recorded in T219078 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T219078>) two of the wdqs hypervisors are busy with unrelated workloads. I'll keep an eye on that and try to get them cleared out soon. VMs in this project have quite a few NFS volumes mounted, including: /data/project /data/scratch /mnt/nfs/dumps-labstore1006.wikimedia.org /public/dumps /home /mnt/nfs/ I would like to know which of those mounts are used by your project, so that I can remove access to the unused ones. So, for example, if people have valuable files in their homedirs and/or need to be able to share homedirs between VMs, that would be a reason to continue to have an nfs mount for /home. You could provide a good default in the git puppet tree, though, if there is a good universal default. Easier would be to just add it to the project-wide hiera setting on Horizon. TASK DESCRIPTIONToday I was moving the 'wikidata-query' project to the eqiad1-r region, and stumbled over the wdqs-test VM. It's of a flavor that no longer exists, so any attempt to automatically move it will fail. I'm hoping that the -test name suggests that this was a one-off instance that is no longer useful and can be deleted. If, on the other hand, the VM is important and can not be easily recreated, I would benefit from any documentation or recollection you might have about what its stats (CPU/RAM/DISK) were on creation. Andrew added a comment. So it sounds like you will need dedicated hardware to make this work (if the original test with the t206636 VM was adequate.) The analytics team is experimenting with this model currently so we'll see how it goes. You would need to figure out about budgeting/procurement/specs/etc to get your own server installed within the cloud but that's not especially complicated. There are two ways I think we can go forward with this: Run a second set of tests on a similar VM that shares a host with other active cloud instances (to see if we can meet your needs as a standard user), or Start talking about buying you a private virt host so you can do tests like this that are uncontested by anything except for other tests of yours Number 1 seems like a good option to eliminate but of course it means you'll need to repeat your tests. Unfortunately to get a good test in the new future I'd need to build you a new VM in the old region (where there's actually some busy traffic happening). All of the storage for that instance is hosted on SSDs. I can partition the extra space for you if you want -- you would just want to add the puppet class profile::labs::lvm::srv. I definitely see role::wdqs::labs as an available class in Horizon, in the 'Puppet Configuration' tab. Ensure that your tests are running on an SSD host (the cloud is currently a mix of ssds and spinning disks) Try giving you a private cloudvirt host so your use is uncontested. We have a couple of reserve systems currently, so if you tell me the specs you need for a test VM I can create one for you to try out. If you're satisfied with the results then we can discuss the expense of getting you your own host to run your tests.
