Found an affected client that carried a local storage entry MediaWikiModuleStore:wikidatawiki with a huge map of items. Removing this entry and reloading the page resolved the issue.

Yes model: additionally wrap each lemma in a span indicating lemma language, the container span can stay as is, as the message formatting the (slash) is in UI language.

Observations:
SqlEntityIdPager can be used to select entities (their ids) by page_namespace (which can be derived from the entity type) from the database
currently only supports this for one entityType at a time
when querying for more than one entity type, filtering
