hashar added a comment. When archiving the Gerrit repositories, we delete the mirrors in GitHub. The replication replaces slashes [/] by dashes [-] in the Gerrit project names. In ideal world we would have a script/runbook to archive the repositories and take care of all those tasks, or maybe a system to automatically sync up the states. Looking at `docker-registry.wikimedia.org/releng/quibble-buster-php74:1.6.0-s4`: $ grep -R memory_limit /etc/php /etc/php/7.4/cli/php.ini:memory_limit = -1 /etc/php/current/cli/php.ini:memory_limit = -1 The CLI definitely runs without a memory limit but the web requests are hitting Apache / php-fpm and checking the later: $ php-fpm7.4 -i|grep memory_limit memory_limit => 128M => 128M Is it too low? Possibly, then we have apparently been running with that low level limit for years. What I suspect is the first web request triggers the generation of a large set of data for cache purpose. The jobs got migrated from Node 16 to Node 18 by https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/integration/config/+/989842 Then checking docker-registry.wikimedia.org/releng/node16-test , it is based on Bullseye as well and thus comes with the same ssl libs: ii libssl1.1:amd64 1.1.1w-0+deb11u1 amd64Secure Sockets Layer toolkit - shared libraries ii openssl 1.1.1w-0+deb11u1 amd64Secure Sockets Layer toolkit - cryptographic utility So my guess is Webpack needs to be updated to match whatever new expectations are imposed by NodeJS 18 crypto. That is potentially solveable by upgrading webpack to 5.x? There is eg https://github.com/webpack/webpack/issues/17805 Both Wikibase tainted refs and the Popups extensions have Webpack 4.x as a dependency (for Popups I think that seems to be a transient dependency of Storybook). If the upgrade is non trivial, I can recreate the NodeJS 16 jobs and rollback the repos from Node 18 to 16. The Jenkins job clones `wikidata/query/gui` and shells out to `scripts/set-up-git.sh` which: git clone "https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/wikidata/query/gui-deploy; ./build git -C ./build \ remote set-url --push origin \ ssh://wdqsguibuil...@gerrit.wikimedia.org:29418/wikidata/query/gui-deploy The git push happens from the Jenkins host rather than from the container, which was done to take advantage of the ssh agent being run in the job and which is not reachable from within the container. I don't know why it would fail the host key verification sometime and sometime would not. It is done manually by running the `./fab` script at the root of the repository and is outside scap. That is done outside of the MediaWiki backport & config windows. There were a few gotchas here and there due to how we run the CI jobs and some trouble passing the ssh agent inside the container (I went to push from the Jenkins job as a workaround). @noarave thank you so much for doing this work! When a patch is triggered for a MediaWiki extension, Quibble invokes `composer run phpunit:entrypoint -- --testsuite extensions`. The suite is defined in `mediawiki/core` `tests/phpunit/suite.xml` and finds tests extensions registered via the `onUnitTestsList` hook. As a result, Quibble triggers PHPUnit tests for every single extensions that are dependencies. It is a brute force approach to run the cross extensions integration tests. There are a lot of issues: we run way too many tests and given the dependencies are not bi directional, some integration tests are not run when an extension is not defined as a dependency. But I digress. The coverage is rendered with solely for tests of the triggering extension (and thus the coverage reports lacks any tests exercised by other repositories). Perhaps CI could get the list of directories to cover from some configuration file in the extension, instead of guessing. MediaWiki core has `composer run phpunit:coverage-edit` which invokes `includes/composer/ComposerPhpunitXmlCoverageEdit.php` which looks similar to the CI script `phpunit-suite-edit.py` uses the same wrong assumption. Looks like it can be replaced by the MediaWiki core equivalent code. With that Gitlab fork you can create a new branch and work on the Pipeline integration there. Once ready for the switch, you would: - resync the repositories (`git fetch --mirror origin; git push --mirror gitlab) - in a local check out merge the branch having the Gitlab adjustements and merge that in the HEAD branch to catch up with changes made to the "upstream" GitHub repository. The root cause is the Unix user uid has been changed over night while files on the filesystem had not been updated. We still need a feature for developers to be able to expressly mark a test as only running when a patch affects the repository holding that test. Maybe using another npm script entry point which would make wdio to only process files in eg `tests/selenium/standalone`. But that result is almost instantly obsolete since we trigger jobs which clone multiple repositories. Thus as code is being merged in eg ContentTranslation, another run of CI would lead to different results which is what happened in this case. When a code causes a test to fail, every repositories relying on this cause ends up broken. In this case it affected a Selenium job which is shared by roughly 60 repositories (list at T320471#8306725 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T320471#8306725>). Which mean no changes made to this repositories can be merged which is thus blocking a lot of people. The policy we have is to revert immediately to unbreak CI given code can always be proposed again. In this case it additionally blocked the MediaWiki train :) Most probably one could have reached out directly to you to have some synchronization and maybe a hot fix would have been easy to do. Then in most case who ever are presents at the time on IRC would take the easy path: revert and resolve the issue immediately then investigate for a proper patch later on. The aim is really to unblock everyone. It does take in account serialization has changed with php 7.4 and the code
is correct. The test fails on our CI because we have patched php7.4 to use the
old serialization format, the switch got made as part of upgrading Quibble to
1.4.6 https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/integration/config/+/828611
The reason we had to patch php 7.4 is the Wikimedia cluster currently runs a
mix of php 7.2 and 7.4. Thus when a process runs under php 7.4, the serialized
object is stored in the cache with the new format. When a later process running
with php 7.2 attempts to unserialize the new format, it fails leading to
T316601 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T316601>.
The approach we took was to patch php 7.4 to use the old format as described
at T316601#8201209 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T316601#8201209>. This
way we can finish the migration on the Wikimedia cluster. For this failing
test, it means that even if it varies its expectations based on `phpversion()
>= 7.4`, when it runs on our patched php 7.4 the serialization is done with the
old format. The test break.
@Jakob_WMDE and @Silvan_WMDE raised it on IRC in `#wikimedia-releng`. We
concluded the easiest course of action right now is to mark the test skipped
and restore it once Wikimedia has fully migrated to php 7.4 and that we move
the CI images to the original php 7.4 version.

When trying the jobs yesterday they failed again. The reason is that the
extension dependencies are not injected by Zuul since the change is in progress
and not deployed. I have been testing them by manually triggering them on

them in the CI jobs:

hashar added a comment. @kostajh has found the issue, the failing jobs are the one that do not start supervisord and thus do not have memcached server running. Quibble 1.4.4 configure the caches to use memcached whenever the PHP extension is loaded but since there is no memcached server the cache is empty. `maintenance/update.php` then complains `en` is not in the LocalisationCache and the build fails. We will need to change the images entry point to invoke supervisord. Aka change them to use `ENTRYPOINT ["quibble-with-apache"]` and probably rename that script while at it since it invokes supervisord which now spawns Apache AND memcached. It seems to add the `Change-Id` header using `git-interpret-trailers` which would be the command being confused by the Depend a bot commit message. The reason is that it insert the header before the line having `---` which must be handled specifically by `git-interpret-trailers`? It is way easier to consume the binary packages maintained by sury.org, the person behind it is the developer maintaining the official PHP Debian package. The bulk of it is they have split the apcu and xdebug packages to no more be version independent so we just need to install the proper versions directly, for example: php7.3-apcu and php7.3-xdebug. Following patches will address it for Quibble and for other CI images using those packages. One of the build uses `docker-registry.wikimedia.org/releng/quibble-buster-php73:1.3.0` but complains with: counterexample Composer is operating significantly slower than normal because you do not have the PHP curl extension enabled. hashar added a comment. @awight potentially though `tmpfs` goes in memory and is expensive. A run with core + Wikibase and all the npm dependencies turn out to be around 9G iirc which is a lot to put in RAM. I was looking at a stall build today and it `iotop` definitely showed up the Docker daemon being IO busy. Ideally the container destroying should be done asynchronously rather than holding and preventing `docker run` from completing but that is how things are :/ On the "hardware" side files are written to the instance "disk" which is backed up by Ceph. There is some IO throttling there. If we could find a way to make the underlying storage to be less synchronous or accept data loss, we would certainly save a bunch of time. I have created the Selenium jobs after the wikibase-client-docker and wikibase-repo-docker phpunit jobs which invoke the `extensions/Wikibase/build/jenkins/mw-apply-wb-settings.sh` with `-r client` or `-r repo` respectively. For Selenium testing we need the repo to be setup I have thus made the jobs to always pass `-r repo`. For the dependencies `Cite` does not seem to be needed. https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/676107 creates bridge and repo Selenium jobs which has MobileFrontend, MinervaNeue and UniversalLanguageSelector as dependencies. The jobs are triggered from all those repositories as well as from mediawiki/core and mediawiki/vendor. I have done it in a similar way as the gated jobs (wmf-quibble-*). That should give a guarantee it will never break. Then I guess we can remove or rename `selenium-test` from the Wikibase package.json in order for Quibble to no more run it for other extensions. That would speed up the wmf-quibble-selenium-* job.
