design ("Use non-JavaScript interface"). Others can configure their default
directly on Special:Recentchanges/Special:Watchlist, then the preferences have
no influence. (You can do much more in the views than in the preferences.)

For Wikidata, this is unfortunate because when you remove a piece of data
("by hand"), it is usually included in the edit summary.
Paradoxically, when the domain is put on the blacklist meanwhile, the only
one blocked by the filter is the cleaner, not the spammer.

TASK DESCRIPTION MonthNameUnlocalizer <https://github.com/wmde/Time/blob/master/src/ValueParsers/MonthNameUnlocalizer.php> is used by PhpDateTimeParser <https://github.com/wmde/Time/blob/master/src/ValueParsers/PhpDateTimeParser.php#L83> to unlocalize month names from user inputs by replacing them with the English ones text-wise. The result is then parsed using PHP's `DateTime` object. For example, `28. prosinec 2022` is replaced with `28. December 2022`, which PHP can understand. In production, MonthNameUnlocalizer's replacements are populated using `MediaWikiMonthNameProvider`, which for each month looks up its name, its genitive form, and its abbreviation <https://github.com/wikimedia/Wikibase/blob/master/repo/includes/Parsers/MediaWikiMonthNameProvider.php#L50-L52> in the given language. In Czech (cs), the replacements are as follows: > $provider = new \Wikibase\Repo\Parsers\MediaWikiMonthNameProvider(); > $provider->getMonthNumbers( 'cs' ); = [ "leden" => 1, "ledna" => 1, "1." => 1, "únor" => 2, "února" => 2, "2." => 2, "březen" => 3, "března" => 3, "3." => 3, ... ] The abbreviated month is always a number followed by a dot. Therefore, if the input is in the DD. MM. format, the day may be replaced instead of the month (since during replacement string is scanned left-to-right). For example, `5. 4. 1891` (April 5th, 1891) can be replaced as both `5. April 1891` (parsed correctly) and `May 4. 1891` (parsed with day and month swapped). In general, this depends on which comes first. In case the day is also zero-padded (e.g., `07.05.1997`), the replacement ignores the zeros and may create either `07. 0May 1997` or `0July 05. 1997`. PhpDateTimeParser then transforms them to either `07.0May.1997` or `0July.05.1997` and lets PHP parse them. The result seems to depend on PHP version. In production (PHP 7.4), the date is parsed as June 30th, 1997 (1997-07-00 -> 1997-06-30). On PHP 8.1, it is considered invalid. I was primarily focused on fixing the parent task T221097
<https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T221097>. When you use Czech (cs) as the
interface language and type some dates in the format "DD.MM." or "DD. MM.
", they are either parsed with the day and month swapped or the produced
date is completely nonsensical. (This does not happen when you use English.)
For example:
- "11. 12. 2022" is interpreted
<https://www.wikidata.org/w/api.php?action=wbparsevalue=json=time=11.%2012.%202022=%7B%22language%22%3A%22cs%22%7D=2=cs>
as "November 12th, 2022", although "December 11th, 2022" is expected.
- "07.05.1997" is interpreted
<https://www.wikidata.org/w/api.php?action=wbparsevalue=json=time=07.%2005.%201997=%7B%22language%22%3A%22cs%22%7D=2=cs>
as "June 30th, 1997" (huh?), although "May 7th, 1997" is expected.
It's still quite a mystery to me why that happens and why it happens for
Czech, but not e.g., English. (I suspect the results come from
`PhpDateTimeParser`.)
The patch (despite looking like a bugfix) effectively adds (or activates) a
parser that parses dates of "date" type. The format of these dates depends on
the input language:

> \Language::factory('de')->getDateFormatString('date', 'default')
= "j. F Y"
> \Language::factory('en')->getDateFormatString('date', 'default')

Provided that the `DateFormatParser` works as intended, the "new" parser
should now catch these dates and parse them correctly.
I hope this interpretation will help evaluate the actual impact.

On the first pass, `DateFormatParser::OPT_DATE_FORMAT` is set with the
`$dateFormat` returned from `Language::getDateFormatString`, which depends on
the `$dateFormatType` (i.e., `'date'` on the first pass).
On the second pass, `DateFormatParser::OPT_DATE_FORMAT` is set with the
`$dateFormat` returned from `Language::getDateFormatString`, which depends on
the `$dateFormatType` (i.e., `'monthonly'` on the first pass).
However, this is done on the **same instance** of ParserOptions, which both
new `DateFormatParser`'s share. The second pass therefore overwrites the first
pass, and both `DateFormatParser`'s are provided with the same value for
`DateFormatParser::OPT_DATE_FORMAT`, making one of them basically useless. This
was probably broken in rEWBA61c58c1e2e92: Make new (Mw)DateFormatParser respect
user-provided precision

An obvious solution is cloning the ParserOptions instance and passing a
(shallow) copy (change

But then, as previously dead code is now active, some tests start to fail,
making the change non-trivial (patch for review
<https://gerrit.wikimedia.org/r/c/mediawiki/extensions/Wikibase/+/620381/5>).
Also, `TimeParserFactory::getTimeParsers` constructs more than just the two
parsers, which all share the same ParserOptions instance. Maybe this kind of
bug affects other parsers, too.

Internally, the comment is stored as `/* clientsitelink-update:0|nlwiki|nlwiki:Koninklijk erkende Fanfare "St. Cecilia", Bocholtz|nlwiki:Fanfare St. Cecilia Bocholtz */`. This is fine. The unwanted escaping happens when the `/* ... */` part is magically transformed, probably in `AutoCommentFormatter::formatAutoComment`: // no message requires wikitext params and some args are user-controlled $args = array_map( 'wfEscapeWikiText', $args ); // render the autocomment $auto = $msg->params( $args )->parse(); At first, I thought the quotes are first escaped by `wfEscapeWikiText` and second by `Message::parse`... but in fact, //they are escaped earlier// and `wfEscapeWikiText` is the second time. In core, `CommentFormatter::preprocessRevComment` calls `CommentParser::preprocess` which calls `CommentParser::preprocessInternal` with `$unsafe = false` and that calls `Sanitizer::escapeHtmlAllowEntities` which includes this: # It seems wise to escape ' as well as ", as a matter of course. Can't # hurt. Use ENT_SUBSTITUTE so that incorrectly truncated multibyte characters # don't cause the entire string to disappear. $html = htmlspecialchars( $html, ENT_QUOTES | ENT_SUBSTITUTE ); So this is the first escaping which treats `'` (see T187912 <https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T187912>) and `"` in particular. It actually does hurt... matej_suchanek added a comment. Yes, it probably depends on the language. When you edit e.g. dates on Wikidata manually, it will try to parse the input in your language (or English). I think it can be changed using `uselang= So maybe we should always force parsing in English and add an argument to override this.
