  This was due to an outage caused by an issue with DNS cleanup and naming of 
the service.

  We don't have any real tables in the *_p databases, and we should keep it 
that way because I think it very unwise to complicate the wikireplicas more 
than they already are. Only views are in those DBs, and they point at tables in 
the corresponding "non_p" databases. That's the whole basis of the design at 
the moment.  I also do not wish to create things that exist outside the 
scripted system re: the views.
  
  Theoretically, many tasks around the views should be do-able by the WMCS 
on-call without a lot of fuss. The wikidatawiki_p database should just have 
views in it that roughly match the description in the puppet-controlled yaml 
file. Otherwise, it'll get broken by a script run one way or another.

  Generally, anything that is "select *" is under the fullviews structure in 
our config as long as the table name is the same. I think that's healthy.  That 
yaml file is hard enough to understand as is.

  I would prefer the table rename be done, then the views can be adjusted so 
that wb_terms and wb_terms_no_longer_updated both are in the "fullviews" key in 
the yaml.  That will make it clear there is no filtering or other whatnot going 
on.
  
  In the patch I put up both wb_terms and wb_terms_no_longer_updated will point 
to wb_terms until the rename and empty table.

  Ok, it took a bit of doing, but here's what I found:
  The limits that are in place are based on having a server that was on 10G 
Ethernet but with less RAM, etc. Interesting thing is that notes in tasks and 
git state that the problem was that while the pipe was fast-flowing, the disks 
could not keep up. I see we are using the exact same speed of disk (7200RPM), 
but we are using SATA now instead of SAS...so we went to a slower and less 
reliable connection with larger individual disks which also reduces performance 
in a RAID.
  
  I would expect any problems we saw on dataset1001 to be exactly the same on 
these servers, in other words.  I also see no reason to rate limit internal 
connections differently than external ones because the problem will be just as 
bad if not actually worse because of the faster network speeds possible if the 
bottleneck is the disks.  All that said, the restriction seems pretty 
draconian. It might be reasonable to try stepping up the rate a little bit. I 
wouldn't just remove it or make a huge jump, though.
  
  I propose lifting the overall limit to 5120k to see how that affects the 
server. If that's ok, we could try inching it up more or splitting the limits 
somehow.

Ok, scwiki now has the compatibility whatnot moved to separate tables.  If that doesn't break a lot of tools for some reason by tomorrow, I probably should just go ahead and put up patches to depool servers to do the whole batch instead of waiting. @jcrespo, looks great!  I think that, since the work is already done anyway, with the slow development possible on some tools, having some compatibility views available should be helpful.   I'm eager to remove some of the compatibility joins from the replicas (which is part of what this patch does), but it can wait until after the datacenter switchover.  I'll merge and deploy it to a smaller wiki so see how that goes. scwiki seems ok to me for now.

@jcrespo I am prepared to push the patch I put up with the "_compat" tables to provide an easy fix for people with not-so-maintained but still important tools.  I'm not sure I should NULL the fields on this ticket just yet?

However, if we haven't communicated the changes much yet, perhaps this should come after that? The patch I suggested above should be safe to apply right away, allowing maintainers to move to the _compat views, if they want to (maybe that could feature in the early stages of the communication plan), and when the columns need to be hidden, they can be hidden on the main views, but not the compat views (which will need updating to not break, of course).

This should be good to go until we are actually dropping columns. So one last thing on this (with the exception of changes needed just before columns are removed).  When I run some of the resulting queries from that patch, I noticed that the slots table does a full table scan.  
This one in particular (understanding that wiki is my local DB):

LEFT JOIN 
  (`wiki`.`slots` JOIN `wiki`.`slot_roles` on (slot_role_id = role_id AND role_name = 'main') 
  JOIN `wiki`.`content` on (slot_content_id = content_id) 
  JOIN `wiki`.`content_models` on (content_model = model_id)) 
on slot_revision_id = ar_rev_id;

I'm looking in case there is something that needs to be indexed here.  Since the join loads slots with a lot of joins, then it filters via the last line, perhaps that's just to be expected here, though. I'm messing around with these and making sure I understand right.  I've been assuming this sort of thing is going to be a left join so that we get old stuff and new stuff.  Should this be an inner join (actually filtering rows out, which is a bit more severe)?  I mean, are we going to write everything to the new columns, so I'm not filtering page records out?
