Whatamidoing-WMF added a comment. Having that geographical data would probably be useful to Wikivoyage, too. I wonder whether other projects could benefit from it. Maybe {{requested photos}} at the Wikipedias? And I could easily imagine some editors at Wikipedia (or other projects) wanting to search first for images from their own region: 'apples grown nearby' vs 'apples'.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T76011EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Whatamidoing-WMFCc: El_Grafo, Whatamidoing-WMF, Aklapper, Matanya, Steinsplitter, Daniel_Mietchen, Liuxinyu970226, Gilles, JanZerebecki, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, Acer, Izno, Wikidata-bugs, Base, matthiasmullie, aude, Deskana, Ricordisamoa, Fabrice_Florin, Mbch331, Tgr___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

Whatamidoing-WMF added a comment. Note on alt text: This is for the benefit of people using Commons, i.e., when there is no contextual consideration, but where "Painting of X" or "Headshot of Joe Film" might be helpful to sort through images with sometimes unreadable names. Wikipedia editors might or might not choose to copy the basic alt text, but if they did, they could easily change it whenever "Painting of X" or "Headshot of Joe Film" was not the appropriate description in their context.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T166094EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Whatamidoing-WMFCc: Whatamidoing-WMF, Aklapper, GoranSMilovanovic, QZanden, Acer, Izno, Wikidata-bugs, Base, matthiasmullie, aude, Deskana, Ricordisamoa, Fabrice_Florin, Mbch331, Tgr___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

[Wikidata-bugs] [Maniphest] [Commented On] T131132: Re-label the "Save" button to be "Publish", to better indicate to users the outcomes of their action
Whatamidoing-WMF added a comment. In T131132#2581092, @Platonides wrote: @Whatamidoing-WMF could you link to those studies? Unfortunately, most of them haven't been published (or they published their main points, and omitted information about this particular issue). I'm trying to collect some more details. However, it's probably worth being clear about the best of the likely results: "publishing the studies" probably means uploading a slidedeck that provides little more than the conclusions. The raw data is mostly video of in-depth interviews with indentifiable living people, and it is unlikely that the WMF has permission to post them online. At this point, it might be possible to produce an (incomplete[1]) list of studies with entries that look something like this: March 2016 study with new users. Structured interviews with six people. All were either uncertain of the button's effect, or wrong. Three said they thought that 'save' would make a private copy on their own computer. After discovering how it worked, one volunteered that the button ought to say 'publish' instead. And... I'm not sure that a list like this would be very helpful. If someone has trouble believing that half the newbies could be confused by this button, then that person is likely to still have trouble believing that half the newbies could be confused by this button, despite now having a list of dates in which newbies said they were confused by this button. [1] Most of the people who ran the earliest studies haven't worked for the WMF for years now. I therefore assume that some studies will not be found.TASK DETAILhttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T131132EMAIL PREFERENCEShttps://phabricator.wikimedia.org/settings/panel/emailpreferences/To: Jdforrester-WMF, Whatamidoing-WMFCc: DannyH, RandomDSdevel, Stashbot, thiemowmde, thcipriani, Platonides, Dereckson, MZMcBride, tarlocesilion, Antanana, Alsee, Matthiasb, BethNaught, Kharkiv07, Philippe, Risker, Scott, APerson, John_Broughton, Whatamidoing-WMF, Ricordisamoa, Qgil, Base, Dispenser, Xaosflux, Florian, TerraCodes, Liuxinyu970226, Zppix, Deskana, Quiddity, Elitre, DLynch, gerritbot, TheDJ, Aklapper, Jdforrester-WMF, merbst, Lewizho99, Maathavan, Wess, D3r1ck01, Samtar, FloNight, Johan, Trizek-WMF, Izno, Psychoslave, Luke081515, Jrf, Husun1297, Wikidata-bugs, Etonkovidova, aude, GOIII, Gryllida, Swainr, Arrbee, KartikMistry, Mbch331, Jay8g, Keegan, Rdicerb___ Wikidata-bugs mailing list Wikidata-bugs@lists.wikimedia.org https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikidata-bugs

Whatamidoing-WMF added a comment. In T101086#2226452, @Liuxinyu970226 wrote: Mnn, correct. For such "faux English" labels, the right way is to submit codes and names to CLDR, then let users on CLDR to localize them. Part of "the right way" to handle unknown codes is "leave it blank if you don't know what language it is, instead of filling in 'English', which is almost always going to be wrong." Perhaps we should "standardize" unknown and invalid codes on "produce an error message".
