It is not clear that it is interactive
"the indicator may look like text" and "people may not know that it is interactive" have actual scenarios of which problems and confusions they cause.
Do we know that this is an actual problem for users? Have we hear

@Lucas_Werkmeister_WMDE, @thiemowmde : Yes, that is too massive. So, lets remove the border. Lets also sit together and find another way to indicate interactivity (maybe via hover styles, background or something else).

There are different assumptions about what the feature does not not does and also what the actual problem is. For some it is a useful indicator, others see it as cluttering. Only way to find out is to test it.

The question we really need to answer is: do we need the number at all? I don't believe we do. It only adds more noise to the already noisy UI.
If in user tests it turns out we do need it then it shouldn't be visually disconnected but for example inside the triangl
