I think you misunderstand the nature of the RDF data representation. In RDF, triples are composed of values, which are either URIs or strings. Wikibase items are referred

You don't really need multiple functions, just do STRAFTER( STR( ?item ), STR( wd: ) ). I've yet to see any scenario where it wouldn't be enough.
I would personally prefer a triple because they really are simple.

It might seem simple to you, but you have a lot more experience than most of us. :) The various methods all involve multiple functions, which means remembering which functions you need for the method you want to use, which order to use them in, which arguments the functions
