[Wikidata-l] Coding da Vinci

2014-03-19 Thread Lydia Pintscher
Hey folks :)

There is a cool hackathon around open data and culture coming up. I'm
sure there are a few possible awesome Wikidata-related projects some
of you could take on. Details (unfortunately only in German) are here:

Cheers
Lydia

[Wikidata-l] Wikidata and GLAM

2014-03-19 Thread Gerard Meijssen
Hoi,
Next month I will be presenting a half a day meeting in the Netherlands for
a big GLAM partner. This presentation will likely be repeated for other
GLAMs in the Netherlands at a later date.

I have a tentative program for half a day. I will present about Wikidata, I
will show information that already exists for both artists, works of art
and institutions. I will demonstrate Wikidata, Reasonator, WDQ.

One of the things that we will cover is how to add information from their
databases to Wikidata. They are very much into movies, actors, television
etc.

My question to you. What would you like to see covered in such a workshop /
presentation. What emphasis would work for you best.
Thanks,
 GerardM

Authority control [*].

Geo-tagging/ coordinates.

Adding tags to objects in OpenStreetMap, linking back to Wikidata.

The usefulness of Wikipedians-in-Residence (in the wider sense,
Wikipedian simply being a more easily understood label for a role
covering sister projects, including Wikidata, and the wider open-
movement).

We need GLAMs to make suggestions for features/ properties they'd find
useful in Wikidata.

Good luck with the presentation; or, rather, break a leg!

[*] As an aside, please invite and encourage every attendee to
register for an ORCID identifier http://orcid.org,

Wikipedia and Wikidata user pages, if they have them)

Cool idea on the accession number.

I'd like to get a simple (cough dummies guide) on how to use Wikidata
in general (it's went through epic changes since I first fiddled with upon
launch), and perahps a workshop on how we can use this for GLAM
professionals - meaning I'd like to see a chance for us to be presenting
at conferences on how to use this tool.

Thanks Gerard for taking up this much needed task!

Sarah and already covered my ideas. I would only add, would it be possible
to have a video recording of your presentation so that we can share it with
interested people and GLAMs?

Thank you.

P.S. I have just proposed an accession number property for Wikidata,

I don't think it is necessary, we alredy have catalog code:

[Wikidata-l] Wikidata for organizing 1000s of extensions in mediawiki.org?

2014-03-19 Thread Quim Gil
Organize MediaWiki's catalog of 1000s of extensions using Wikidata. Is this
a sensible idea? Reality checks and other opinions are welcome here or at

https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=46704#c33

Pasting the relevant part for convenience:

Has anybody discussed the possibility of creating Wikidata items for
extensions, after defining a set of properties to describe them? Linking
those Wikidata items to mediawiki.org extension pages, and then playing
with templates and what not to keep the semantic data up to date (version
number, last release, dependencies, compatible with MediaWiki releases...)?
Then play with templates, queries and visualizations to create all kinds of
useful output, from structured extension pages to a proper and robust map
of extensions.

Re: [Wikidata-l] Wikidata for organizing 1000s of extensions in mediawiki.org?

2014-03-19 Thread Gerard Meijssen
Hoi,
I would seriously consider this for two reasons. Yes, we can include this
kind of information, obviously. It is worthwhile information so that is one.

The most important reason why I want to seriously have this information is
because the audience we gain. It is the developers of MediaWiki. They gain
first hand experience and consequently they will start first to gain
experience and use it and second start to consider it for what else
Wikidata can do for them.

My blogpost about Commons and Wikidata was written exactly because Wikidata
is not understood and considered by this most vital group for the further
development of Wikidata and MediaWiki.
Thanks,
 GerardM
