Re: [Wikidata] Citizens of countries

2018-04-17 Thread Gerard Meijssen
Hoi,
Adding people to Wikidata is relatively straightforward. It starts with
people being in categories on Wikipedia. I had a look and I think this has
been done not to long ago for Mozambique. I have done such things in the
past as well.

As to districts, provinces et al. I did that for the Ottoman Empire. It
took me a long time to get all the data into Wikidata. I connected it to
the dignitaries for these eyalets and vilayets. The information is
fragmented and thanks to the spelling differences there will remain a lot
of work to be done or both the administrative entities and the dignitaries
because it is also incomplete. Many of these people have been military
leaders as well. When you compare the level of detail of wars including
"Western" countries, you will find there is way more information present.

I have found that in lists, also lists like the George Polk award on en.wp
we have a least a four to six percent error rate. It takes a lot of manual
work to get corrected information into Wikidata. I have been working on the
GP award for a long time. The problem is that without a link to Wikidata
for blue and red links, it is extremely hard to find the issues. Without
such links you cannot really compare the differences between articles in
different Wikipedias. Our quality suffers and as I said we are only of by
some four to six percent.

When we can easily compare information between articles on any subject in
any Wikipedia, we can spot the loonies, we can provide Wikidata based
information on the red links and as a consequence this will have a huge
impact on the quality of the information we provide. It will take years to
get all the kinks out but it will have an immediate effect particularly
where we are weak like in providing information on all the parliamentarians
of Mozambique, Rwanda or Niger, Malawi or Gabon [1].

Thanks,
   GerardM

Hoi,
Thank you! This is for me a really important eye opener.. It shows for
instance how little we know about countries like Mozambique.. When we add
all the parliamentarians for the last 40 year for instance, we would
probably double that number easily.

I have my own niche at the moment adding information about Muslim history

2018-04-17 Thread Envel Le Hir
Hello everyone,

I made two small improvements to Denelezh in order to answer to Gerard:
* The "Total" column was added to display the total number of humans for
each set, and the previous "Total" column was renamed "Total with gender".
* The threshold that a country needs to be displayed in the tool was
lowered from 1,000 to 200 humans (there are now 234 countries, 128
previously). Data is available starting from the last dump (2018-04-09),
loaded last night.

Gerard, here is the link to the data you're looking for (with Mozambique
and Ottoman Empire included):
https://denelezh.dicare.org/gender-gap.php?threshold=200#country

Re: [Wikidata] Citizens of countries

2018-04-16 Thread Gerard Meijssen
Hoi,
Thank you Masti for your reply. This is not what I seek, I want all humans
by country and in separate fields the number of men and the number of
women. This for all countries and all professions.
Thanks,
   GerardM

Re: [Wikidata] Citizens of countries

Gerard,
you start from this query that I use for ListeriaBot
https://pl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Wikipedia_te%C5%BC_jest_kobiet%C4%85/Brakuj%C4%85ce/szwedzkie_pisarki
It lists articles about swedish woman writers that do not have
article on polish Wikipedia.
Should be easy to modify it to your needs.

What would be particularly helpful is when there is a
separate column for the genders. For some former countries
like the Ottoman Empire it takes more effort to find women to
write about.. Making them visible is important.
Thanks,
