Re: [Wiki Loves Monuments] 3 dimensional documentation

2018-02-22 Thread john cummings
This fits nicely with the increase in drone photography, there are several
software packages that can create 3d models from drone footage

This is quite an exciting development!! Of course, it could always speed things
up (and encourage others to donate their already created models) if there was a
specific global prize category for 3-D modeled monuments …?

There are definitely people out there making 3D models of monuments, one
example being http://www.noe-3d.at/ , a website for monuments in Lower
Austria. The time time and effort needed to create a model out of several
hundred pictures (depending on the size of the monument) are quite high
though. Nevertheless, it would be cool if contests could get creators to
submit their models under a free license! :-)

Let me put it this way: Montage has accepted the challenge to support
voting (from the technological standpoint) as long as at least one
campaign has a reasonable number of them. This discussion came up in
Wikimania 2017. S, we're ready. :D

On another note: I would not be surprised if a couple of campaigns
want to give it a try. Some of the local organizers in Israel always
look for new angles. :)

And of course, this means fun at the international jury process level.
I'd say let's give it some months to see if people will pick it up.
