[Wikimedia-l] foundation-l is now wikimedia-l

2012-04-09 Thread Erik Moeller
Hi all,

as promised, foundation-l is now wikimedia-l. Hopefully all the list
settings should have survived without any difference whatsoever except
for the list names. Archives should exist in both places, and only at
the wikimedia-l location going forward. foundation-l delivery should
be disabled.

The wikimedia-l mailing list address is .

I'll update a few wiki pages now, and will send a separate not about
the list description to see if we can agree on some simple revisions
to clarify/broaden its scope. But that's a distinct change that would
need to achieve consensus here first.

Please update your filters and contact lists accordingly.

Thanks,
Erik

Currently the old list email address will bounce, and the old list URL
will give you a "foundation-l does not exist" message (whereas old
archive URLs will continue working).

Daniel's looking into having the old URL redirect to the new URL
(without overriding the archives) as a higher priority.

Archives should be fully working now.

[Wikimedia-l] Tilman Bayer has invited you to use Google Talk

2012-04-09 Thread Tilman Bayer

Tilman Bayer has invited you to sign up for Google Talk so you can talk to each
other for free over your computers.

To sign-up, go to:
http://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount?service=talk&sendvemail=true&skipvpage=true&reqemail=wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org&continue=http://www.google.com/talk/service/handleinvite?p%3D_ZjMaDgBAAA.m8q22IzBg1MRucFWGaKIOzQ7ZHkwEGO5kVV29HfT4jkArhHDKw8Hao2BV9E2B2wt52RmeOvmd5X2LGChTipWSA.qY9pqOAk5ahlLIj1C4fHiA&followup=http://www.google.com/talk/service/HandleEmailVerified?ee%3D_ZjMaDgBAAA.hXUMdgU39JfyoX053cJ9LRX6LUwOOCOXCY7aKNcYIxw.1MCCQhN6BQInekBxqGSspA%26p%3D_ZjMaDgBAAA.m8q22IzBg1MRucFWGaKIOzQ7ZHkwEGO5kVV29HfT4jkArhHDKw8Hao2BV9E2B2wt52RmeOvmd5X2LGChTipWSA.qY9pqOAk5ahlLIj1C4fHiA

Google Talk is a downloadable Windows* application that offers:
- Free calls over your computer anytime, from anywhere, and for as long as you
want
- A simple and intuitive user interface for sending instant messages or making
calls--no clutter, pop-ups or ads
- Superior voice quality through just a microphone and computer speaker
- Fast file transfers with no restrictions on file type

After signing-up, download Google Talk and sign in with your new Google Account
username and password.
You can then begin inviting anyone you want to talk to for free.

Google Talk works with any computer speaker and microphone, such as the ones
built-in to many PC laptops today,
as well as with wired and wireless headsets and USB phones. Google Talk also
works across all firewalls.

Google Talk is still in beta. Just like with Gmail, we're working hard to add
features and make improvements,
so we might also ask for your comments and suggestions periodically. We
appreciate your help in making it even better!

Thanks,

The Google Talk Team

To learn more about Google Talk before signing up, visit:

http://www.google.com/talk/about.html

(If clicking the URLs in this message does not work, copy and paste them into
the address bar of your browser).

* Not a Windows user? No problem. You can also connect to the Google Talk
service from any platform using third-party clients

[Wikimedia-l] Wiki Travel Guide

2012-04-09 Thread James Heilman
First of all yes travel content is educational. Some of the best education
I have received in fact. Travel content however is in a form distinct from
an encyclopedia and thus needs its own project.

The editors from Wikitravel already have the content in a form that can be
easily uploaded into a wiki. They plan to start their own Wiki if we are
not interested.

@Juergen Yes discussions are occurring with WikiVoyage and it is hoped that
they would be interested in joining a combined Wikimedia project as
described. There is reasons why the English community does not simply
rejoin the German community at WikiVoyage. It is my hope that moving to
the WMF will allow the rejoining of these two communities on equal footing.

My sincere apologies. While of course everyone on this list is
cordially invited to chat with me at any time - also on IRC -, it was
not my intention to spam the entire list with this. In my defense it
seems to have been a Gmail web interface bug involving the Reply-To
field (I had clicked "invite to chat" for the sender of a particular
message only), but I can't be sure before investigating further.

Anyway, thanks to everyone who worked on carrying out the switch to
the new list name!

[Wikimedia-l] Wiki Travel Guide

2012-04-09 Thread James Heilman
Typically policies and guidelines are decided by the community of editors
that make up a specific site. With respect to referencing and research
these will be somewhat different from an encyclopdia which is why
attempting to combine this content into Wikipedia is not really
appropriate. Also travel information is more in a "how to tone" rather than
an encyclopedic one.

[Wikimedia-l] New list description - draft

2012-04-09 Thread Erik Moeller
As promised, a separate note about slightly revising the list
description to make it more inclusive and up-to-date:

http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia-l

I've included a sentence at the bottom which is a summary of the
moderation principles that were previously posted here:

http://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/foundation-l/2009-November/056032.html

I would ask the list mods to review whether it's an accurate summary.

Please edit/discuss on-wiki; if this looks sensible, I'll make the
update later this week.

Cheers,
Erik

If using these as they are now would be a precondition for hosting the
project at wikimedia, then Wikivoyage is better of on its own. I'm not
that familiar with the rules of these different sites, but the
articles did not strike me as extremely neutral - but not clearly
partisan either. Most of them are very near that balance that makes
them appealing to a large public while keeping them serious.

Splitting is indeed a bad idea.

Splitting on language barriers is even worse :) I understand you guys
already have a German NGO, which, as I've come to know, offers many
advantages for European users over an American one. But the truth is
the WMF has an extensive expertise on running MediaWiki-based websites
and you would always have the latest version of the software and
acceptable support from the developers. Plus, the single sign-on would
also help with participation.

Perhaps your contributors would be interested in some kind of
collaboration scheme, were the WMF would host the site? The idea has
been brought up on this list some time ago for Citizendium, why could
we not apply it for other projects? I think this would also fit with
the WMF's intention to broaden the types of affiliation it allows.

Regards,
  Strainu

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia mobile application development

2012-04-09 Thread MZMcBride
Hi.

I've been having difficulty wrapping my head around Wikimedia's (relatively)
recent efforts in mobile application development. I understand that reaching
users on mobile platforms is important to the Wikimedia Foundation and I've
read and related
pages.

Mobile seems to have two branches these days: (1) the mobile versions of the
sites; and more recently (2) specific mobile applications. Branch 1 is
fairly understandable. What I'm having difficulty understanding is branch 2.

The idea behind free and open content is that the content can be taken and
reused and redistributed by others without issue. That's part of the great
beauty of Wikimedia wikis. With a vibrant app market for both Androids and
iPhones, why is Wikimedia getting involved in mobile application
development? Isn't this something best left to third parties (which, as I
understand it, have already filled the "Wikipedia app" niche with a variety
of options for both platforms) or interested volunteers?
