Re: [Wikimedia-l] New access to non-public information policy, re-ID requirements and data retention

2013-10-15 Thread Keegan Peterzell
Thanks for the notice about this discussion. I knew it was to be a part of
the new privacy policy, but I wasn't aware of the talk page.

We already went through a similar discussion two and a half years ago,
when the WMF planned to make all OTRS agents re-identify to them by sending
a copy (or a scan) of their ID to a secure e-mail address (or by using
 another option provided).

This isn't 100% correct. The idea was to have agents who had not already
identified do so, since OTRS agents have access to a massive amount of
non-public information. For those interested in the result, it was posting
a public list of OTRS agent usernames on meta. There is no current
requirement for agents to ID.

not wearing OTRS admin hat, just sayin'

Not really. The discussion on the OTRS wiki clearly states that the
intention was for all OTRS volunteers to [be] identified just like
CheckUsers, Oversights, and Stewards in accordance with the non-public
data and privacy policies. which, at that time required people to
satisfactorily identify themselves to the Foundation (and they still do),
which in effect means that they need to send a copy of their ID to the WMF.

The discussion, as I was clarifying, was about requiring agents that had
not Identified to do so. There was no re-identifying require, which is th
point that I was making.

The posting of a public list of OTRS agents usernames was result of an
entirely different discussion, which was only started in January 2013; the
one I was referring to took place in February 2011 (and later on).

The two are related. Both measures seek transparency, one to the WMF and
one to the community. The fact that the community side has worked is
interesting when there is pushback to private transparency.

Oh yes, that's right. Thanks for the clarification, Keegan; I'm sorry
about the confusion.

The community side, as you call it, has received its share of comments,
criticism, and suggestions from OTRS volunteers when the issue was
brought to their (our) attention.

There have been many voices opposing the publication or at least
concerned about the possible implications of the change, just as there
are some voices expressing concerns about the apparent lack of details
and deeper thought behind some parts of the policy.

I don't think this is something new or interesting per se; people
usually tend to ask tough questions when it comes to their privacy, and
I can only hope we will be able to work out the details, and that the
WMF will be able to respond to people's concerns.

The same can be argued for the many other features that can be found in
your preferences.

No reason to see that as a downside, but a chance to cover that in the
intro training explaining that many features and additional options can be
found under your preferences and for example we will enable Visual Editor.

This is an interesting point, thanks for making it. I would never have
considered the identification via private means something relating to
transparency, but it's clear that – as you say – people are more
likely to accept a transparency which benefits the public.

I know this is a battle that the Foundation's engineers can't possibly win,
given the circumstances which VE was moved from opt-out to opt-in on enwiki
(see

gets upset.

From a pure technical standpoint, is it possible to put a checkbox on the
new user page or something so that new users can turn it on without having
to delve deep into the untamed wilderness that is the user preferences page?

Cheers,

Charles,

Is this because of the browser they are using, the wiki they are trying to
edit on, or specific to their account? Which wiki are you talking about
this happening on?

There was a configuration that we used in June for just over a week to A/B
test VisualEditor, but that code is no longer around, so this should not be
happening.

However, users of Internet Explorer and some marginal or old browsers
cannot use VisualEditor yet as we have not been able to get it to work
there, which may explain the issue?

2013-10-15 Thread Ziko van Dijk
This is very true; there is a gap between what (most) beginners like
to do and what would be wise to do. Some education colleagues told me
that their beginners never wanted to edit elsewhere than on the real
Wikipedia, not on an educational wiki. That beginners what to write
an article of their own as the first thing, and are not interested
in free knowledge, free licenses etc.

I compare that to someone who wants to get a drivers license. Riding
on the highway, that's great, but learning for the theoretical exam,
few are eager to. :-)

[Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Letters of Intent for FDC Round 2 due Nov 8, and community review right now!

2013-10-15 Thread Katy Love
Dear members of the Wikimedia community,

I write to remind Wikimedia-affiliated entities interested in
submitting an annual plan grant proposal to the Funds Dissemination
Committee (FDC) in Round 2 2013-2014 that they must first submit a
Letter of Intent (LOI). The Letter of Intent is the first step in
applying for funds from the FDC, as outlined in the FDC Framework. [1]
This step has been implemented as part of the improvements for
2013-2014. In Round 1 of this year, it helped the FDC staff to work
closely with interested applicants ahead of eligibility and proposal
deadlines.

Entities interested in applying for funding in Round 2 must submit an
Letter of Intent before submitting a proposal. For Round 2 of
2013-2014, the LOI is due on November 8. The LOI asks potential FDC
applicants to state their intentions to apply and to include a
notional dollar figure (or local currency figure). The LOI can be
created on the FDC portal [2], and a sample is here for your
reference. [3] The LOI is non-binding, but it is required.

Milestones from Round 2 can be found on the portal [4] and below:

* Letter of Intent deadline: 8 November 2013
* Deadline for WMF Staff to post eligibility: 15 December 2013
* Deadline for entities to meet eligibility requirements: 15 February 2014
* Proposal submission deadline: 1 March 2014
* Community review period: 1 March 2014 - 31 March 2014
* Staff assessment deadline: 8 April 2014
* FDC recommendation due: 1 May 2014
* Board decision due: 1 June 2014

Also, I want to bring to your attention the current Round 1 community
review process for the eleven Round 1 proposals just submitted to the
FDC. We ask you, members of the community, to share your thoughts and
questions on the Discussion pages of the submitted proposals! [5]

Have any questions or comments? Reach out to us at:
fdcsupp...@wikimedia.org. The FDC staff is here to help you understand
and navigate the process!

Cheers,
Katy Love and the FDC support team

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Letters of Intent for FDC Round 2 due Nov 8, and community review right now!

2013-10-15 Thread Lodewijk
Thanks for the update!

Just to be clear - after ducking the FDC process for 2013/2014, this will
be the round where the WMF will apply for funding of what it considers
'non-core' programs, correct? (There was some confusion over that in the

latest state of affairs)

 * Proposal submission deadline: 1 March 2014
 * Community review period: 1 March 2014 - 31 March 2014
 * Staff assessment deadline: 8 April 2014
 * FDC recommendation due: 1 May 2014
 * Board decision due: 1 June 2014

2013-10-15 Thread Anasuya Sengupta
Hi Lodewijk,

Thanks for asking. The FDC and WMF are currently in conversation about
exactly what this looks like - so stay tuned for the details :-) - but yes,
in principle, WMF will be submitting its proposal to the FDC in Round 2 of
the process (for the annual plan 2014-15).

 Thanks for the update!

Just to be clear - after ducking the FDC process for 2013/2014, this will
be the round where the WMF will apply for funding of what it considers
'non-core' programs, correct? (There was some confusion over that in the
round earlier this year, so trying to make sure I'm still up to date on the
 latest state of affairs)

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Education] How to force to enable Visual Editor

2013-10-15 Thread Srikanth Ramakrishnan
Chris, as Ziko put it. Would you like a novice driver with a Learner's
permit to drive on a Crowded street or a High speed expressway or in a
deserted ground?

Visual Editor for newbies has caused a lot of pages to 'break' as I have
noticed.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Education] How to force to enable Visual Editor

2013-10-15 Thread Risker
You're correct Srikanth; I'd like to think that VisualEditor will be the
entry editing interface of the future, but it's still not stable enough
and is missing too many features to be ideal for new editors. It is,
however, getting better every time I use it, so it is inching closer
incrementally. Today I successfully completed an edit using VE that I know
for a fact would have broken the page back in July, so progress is being
made. When I worked with a group of new editors back in August, they
universally reverted to using Wikitext because it had easy-to-use
referencing and editing tools, only some of which are now incorporated into
VE, but I have faith that these will be folded in as time goes on.

It should be noted, however, that almost every single bug reported in
relation to VE occurred with experienced editors who had the skill to
report it, or to at least figure out how to undo the edit. Those that
occurred with new editors were not reported unless an experienced editor
reviewed it and then tried to replicate it and figure out what went wrong.
It was this situation that led to showdowns on the English Wikipedia, more
so than just about anything else. Well, that, and making it the production
editing interface without even testing major features.

I cannot speak to the experience on projects outside of English Wikipedia,
but I dearly hope that things are going more smoothly on other projects
that have not decided to remove themselves from participation in the
testing.
