Re: [Wikimedia-l] Community consultation + Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director selection process

2014-01-30 Thread James Salsman
My suggestion of Leonie Haimson as co-director was most certainly not
frivolous, and concern trolling on comments made in the spirit of fun
to try to sideline consideration of her is offensive.

Erik and others, what has Ting accomplished that would make him a
better Director or Co-director than a parent advocate in the education
field whose Foundation and goals have been seriously impacted by paid
advocacy editing abuses on Wikipedia?

[Wikimedia-l] New Program Evaluation report: Other photo upload initiatives

2014-01-30 Thread LiAnna Davis
(again, please excuse cross-posting)

Hi everyone!

I posted the latest in the string of program evaluation reports on Meta
today. This week's installment is on other photo upload initiatives
(non-Wiki Loves Monuments ones):
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Programs:Evaluation_portal/Library/Other_photo_initiatives

Highlights include:
* The average photo upload initiative lasts 30 days and has 16 participants.
* A total of 50,386 images were uploaded to Commons for the six reported
events, and 3,456 (6.9%) images uploaded during these events were already
included in Wikimedia project pages.
* The average photo upload initiative generates more than 2,000 image
uploads to Commons with associated direct costs just over $0.60 USD per
image.

Questions are welcomed and encouraged ***on the talk page***.

On behalf of the Program Evaluation team,

LiAnna

[Wikimedia-l] Earliest known Wiki?

2014-01-30 Thread
Having just uploaded a photograph from the 18th century of Wiki, a
Hopi priest, I'm wondering if this is the earliest record we know of
for the name Wiki? Presumably this the the earliest photograph of a
"Wiki", so it would be neat to celebrate him in some way on our
projects.

I came across this photo as part of one of my current batch upload
projects, in this case photos from the University of Southern
California.

Thank you Erik.

A serious remark on the clone discussion: Instead of trying to copy a
status quo I strongly suggest to move on and embrace the idea of
something or someone new: change is not always easy - sometimes even
scary - but change is inevtiable, necessary and good.

If Sue and Leonie Haimson were mutual co-directors of each other's
organization, that would be better than building a Death Star or
cloning either individually at this point.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Recognition of two new user groups

2014-01-30 Thread Bence Damokos
Hi Laura,

The Brasilian community has a long history with many twists. At one time
there was a proposed chapter that the Board has recognized but was never
founded; and the Affiliations Committee has recommended the user group
route for the community in their current aspiration to form a chapter. I am
really glad that the community has accepted the recognition and opened the
way for a real Brasilian chapter to be founded in the near-future.

Best regards,
Bence

Also, I don't think that our community could agree on building a Death
Star, seeing that it's diameter is subject of a fierce dispute and edit
war on Wikipedia:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Lamest_edit_wars#Death_Star

I believe building the Infosphere is much more suitable given our
movement's mission:

all the information in the Universe"
