Re: [Wikimedia-l] RfC: Works which can't be freely licensed

2015-02-23 Thread Amir E. Aharoni
But, my initial point was: Am I missing something? Would there be any
reason why such grammar would have sense without ND clause?

 Milos,

Could we not import these works onto Wikisource in original format,
where they would be preserved without permitting altering from the
original? Wikisource community is a 'free-culture' equivalent of ND -
altering the original is considered to be vandalism.

This makes perfect sense to me.

But since Milos asked: In Wikisource changing the original is indeed
vandalism, but somebody must notice that it's vandalism. AFAIK Wikisource
doesn't have a proper way to authenticate that the document is in its
original form.

The immediate geeky thing that comes to mind is to add some digital
signature or checksum to the version that Matica Srpska considers the
authoritative one and to declare that anything that doesn't have the same
checksum is not the normative grammar.

Another example from the Free software world is TeX, which can be relevant
here: It is released under a Free license, and modification is allowed, but
modified versions cannot be called TeX. See
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/TeX#License

Making it ND is a problem not just because of free licensing purism. Just
for the sake of the example, let's say that this normative grammar is a
book in four parts: pronunciation, spelling, morphology and syntax. I am
teaching a course on Serbian morphology and I want to use the corresponding
chapter, and no others. Printing all chapters would waste paper, but
printing only one chapter would violate the ND clause. Of course, teachers
all around the world do it all the time anyway, but we don't want to
violate anything, right? :)

If I'm not wrong, cc-whatever specifies that the author of the primitive
work has no responsability on derivative works, and I think that a clause
that limits the name of derivative works is not in contrast with the
license. We are used to Wikimedia projects, where the last saved version is
the version, but actually any version is a derivative work of the
previous versions.

Teachers most often can invoke fair use; however, for our sake, we would
like to be able to go beyond that. Even without using ND clauses, we could
think of some superprotection way of ensuring that the reference work is
not modified (and whatever derivative work is something else).

Just like they help when downloading big ISO files - one would be created

not the same thing, then it changed.

But again, this may be just geeky over-thinking.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Renewal of Recognition to Wikimedia Community User Group Brasil

2015-02-23 Thread Rodrigo Padula
Hello Carlos,

Thanks by all information regarding the new Affcom's decisions for an
user group renewal.

Only to clarify, my question was based on the Wikimedia User Group
Agreement where is specified that an User Group and its agents must
submit a written activity report in English to the community each
year.

More specifically, on the item 3.Your Obligations.

You and your User Group must: d.submit, as instructed by WMF, an
annual written activity report in English to the Wikimedia community
and WMF;

This obligation changed too?

My point is not to cause any trouble, I'm asking it here only because
we, the members and people that endorsed the Wikimedia Community User
Group Brasil did not receive any information regarding the renewal
application or any report was published on pt.wikipedia or
br.wikimedia.org.

Best regards

Rodrigo Padula

2015-02-22 10:23 GMT-03:00 Carlos M. Colina ma...@wikimedia.org.ve:
 Dear Rodrigo,

The requirements for WUGs are very simple and the Affiliation Committee has
been working recently on making the process of renewing the recognition of
WUGs as straighforward as possible, since it is something relatively new and
we have seen there is plenty of room for improvement..

This means that in the event a WUG is complying with the basic recognition
requirements, is not transgreding basic rules of conduct against other
wikimedians and there are actively committed Wikimedians behind it working
to advance the mission of our movement, the Affiliations Committee will
continue recognizing it as a movement affiliate and would encourage other
volunteers to either join it, create another one, or simply work as an
 individual, which is perfectly valid.

For the AffCom, the simple will expressed from the contact persons from a
specific WUG regarding their interest in renovating the recognition is
considered enough proof of activity, along with some details provided in the
communication. There is no need for a report of activities with a raised
 seal and stuff :-).

I hope this clarifies any doubt you have about the recognition of the WCUG
 Brasil.

 Thank you,
 Carlos

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Who are the nicest people on our projects ?

2015-02-23 Thread
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Faebot/thanks

I have now set up a monthly report of the top 10 thankers /
thankees with an index to the different project reports on the above
link. These have been generated retrospectively for 2014 and I will
shortly set this up on WMF labs to run at the beginning of each month
to add last month's results.*

Rather than running this automatically for several hundred projects, I
am happy to add projects on request (so long as the thanks extension
is being regularly used by more than 10 people!). Just drop a note on
my meta talk page to request the addition. I have haphazardly picked 6
of the busiest projects to get started on, mainly as a multi-language
test, not because I favour one language Wikipedia over another. :-)

Time for someone to create a thank you barnstar of super thanks ?

This is one of many ad-hoc reports run as Faebot, but if it becomes
especially useful or critical to outreach projects I'll consider
moving a stable version to a special bot account or similar.

* - At the time of writing, the tables for 2014 are being generated.
This may take the rest of the day to complete! If your project has
recently been added, the reports might have to wait for the next
monthly run depending on how much free wiki-time I have.

 Milos,

Could we not import these works onto Wikisource in original format,
where they would be preserved without permitting altering from the
original? Wikisource community is a 'free-culture' equivalent of ND -
altering the original is considered to be vandalism.

Then build a bot to create wiktionary pages where they dont exist, and
link those wiktionary entries to the relevant Wikisource page.

That was the idea we had behind this project

 https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/A_Dictionary_of_the_Sunda_language

with wikt links added to pages yet to be created

 https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Page:A_dictionary_of_the_Sunda_language_of_Java.djvu/28

But I've never gotten around to writing the ws - wikt bot , and was
sort of waiting for wiktionary-wikidata integration to simplify the
 bot's overall structure.

Many of you already know Astrid as a dedicated, energetic, and knowledgable

more direct responsibility and leadership in the organisation. Astrid has
been our GLAM officer during the last 1,5 years. She has already performed
several executive functions, and this codification of that experience is a
natural next step for all of us.

We are thrilled to have Astrid with us in the future, as we are entering
a breaking point with new challenges for funding, professionalization, and
clarifying further the divisions of labour between ED, Board, staff, and
volunteers. The upcoming general assembly in April will further lay those
foundations. We are fully convinced that Astrid will assist and pilot our
chapter through these challenges in an excellent way

reason why such grammar would have sense without ND clause?

Milos,

Could we not import these works onto Wikisource in original format,
where they would be preserved without permitting altering from the
original? Wikisource community is a 'free-culture' equivalent of ND -
altering the original is considered to be vandalism.

Then build a bot to create wiktionary pages where they dont exist, and
link those wiktionary entries to the relevant Wikisource page.

That was the idea we had behind this project

https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/A_Dictionary_of_the_Sunda_language
https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Index:A_dictionary_of_the_Sunda_language_of_Java.djvu

with wikt links added to pages yet to be created

https://en.wikisource.org/wiki/Page:A_dictionary_of_the_Sunda_language_of_Java.djvu/28

But I've never gotten around to writing the ws - wikt bot , and was
sort of waiting for wiktionary-wikidata integration to simplify the
bot's overall structure.

You could be on to something there, Craig. :) I think it's fair to say that
somebody might change his mind in five years for all kinds of reasons -
including being asked nicely. This process is obviously geared to differ
widely from the last. Hopefully it will be a good approach for everyone.

In terms of the nature of the conversation, it is about the future of the
movement. There's already quite a lot of feedback on the talk page from
people who seem happy to discuss exactly that. If you want to join in
specifically to share your thoughts on the future of the Wikimedia
