Re: [Wikimedia-l] Outcomes from the Consultation on Wikimedia movement conferences/Wikimania

Hey Chris. I agree that the ownership of the "what should happen with
Wikimania" question is somewhat murky at the moment. It's true that I
along with others in Community Resources prepared and ran this
consultation, and we've done our best to present conclusions and make a
general plan based on the feedback we received. Further complicating this
issue of ownership is the absence of this team's director (Siko Bouterse)
and her boss (Luis Villa), who have resigned.

With that said, I expect decisions around Wikimania in 2018 to be shaped by
outcomes in Esino Lario this year, in addition to the practical matter of
our budget. I expect there will be opportunities for community members to
help further define what will happen in 2018 as well.

Is it the WMF's view that Wikimania in its current form is

broken and change is needed - if so who represents that view to the

It is fair to say that our team does view the past planning process for
Wikimania (i.e. 2015 and prior) as problematic and not feasible, for the
reasons described in the consultation itself.[1]

Equally, I am not really

I'm in full agreement. The role of the Wikimania/Steering Committee will
need to be better defined, and I suspect some of that will happen over the
next year.

4) I don't see a 55-47 vote on a menu of 3 options as being a particularly

For now, I'll point to this response I made to a similar question on the
discussion page,[2] but I can elaborate more on this if you'd like.

With thanks,

Hi everyone,

A quick update on this project, we've just crossed the 5 000 registered
students.

We'll see how much will complete the course, but so far we're really happy
with this number :)

Of course we'll share more insights once this program is over.

[Wikimedia-l] Your questions about KE.

2016-02-17 Thread Lila Tretikov
Hello, everyone.

There are a lot of questions still floating around around the Knowledge
Engine, in a lot of different places. I want to answer them fully, directly
and in one central place. To that end, I’m going to be putting together an FAQ
page on Meta to ask
and answer questions and - with the help of our staff -- to address them.
We will release answers as we are able to collect and address them, so
depending on the number of questions we get it may take a while, but we
will begin responding during Pacific working hours today.

If you have questions, please send them or leave them there. We may
aggregate similar questions, but we will do our best to answer all of them
to your satisfaction.

Thank you for sharing,

The Technology Group is the part of WMF that will report to the CTO. See
https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Staff_and_contractors#Technology in
comparison to
https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Staff_and_contractors#Product, the
group headed by Wes, in which I sit. It comprises eight departments and
teams, of which Architecture is one.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Simple English please! was The conversation is happening elsewhere :(

2016-02-17 Thread Dan Andreescu
At our all-hands meeting this year, Risker [1] gave a moving talk in which
she pointed out that the Wikimedia movement is a part of the open knowledge
movement. She showed us a picture of Pando, which is a remarkable organism
as you can see for yourself in that article. And she said that the ancient
open knowledge movement is like this ancient group of trees that has
survived everything. And that we are proud to be a part of that movement.
For many of us, it was a reminder that we are connected to something almost
invincible and it gave us hope. That hope and strength was what I was
tapping into with my message, my apologies for not foot-noting.

[Wikimedia-l] Simple English please! was The conversation is happening elsewhere :(

2016-02-17 Thread James Heilman
It is not only people who speak English as a second language who are likely
confused. The confusion comes partly from the fact that we have an ED and
some board members saying one thing and official documents submitted to a
funder saying something different. These two sources of information about
"Wikipedia search" do not appear to be reconcilable.

We then have the partly related issue of low moral among WMF staff. This
has led to some people leaving and others taking time off. Many within the
foundation do not feel they can speak freely due to potential retaliation
from the ED. Many people are therefore being cautious with their words.

I agree we need to speak clearly, simply, and openly. We should also invite
the Knight Foundation to join this conversation. We need to get a few more
perspectives on the issues in front of us.

being in English and at very high level?
I know we can't do nothing about it, but it's worth noting, IMHO, that the
more we go on the fewer people with incredible stamina, analytic skills and
English proficiency will follow and engage.
Not really inclusive for Wikimedia.
I, for one, find it very hard to follow everything and participate.

Thanks Asaf,
I didn't know about that group.

May I also mention that the conversation is also becoming *exhausting*,

Lila and Amy,

Curious what you mean by "Technology group" in regards to "overall
architectural roadmap" and strategy? Perhaps this could be made more clear?

For MediaWiki (and general architectural topics), we have the architecture
committee which is comprised of staff and non WMF developers. and/or you
mean the engineering and product managers?

Cheers,
Katie
