[Wikimedia-l] Launch of Wiki Loves Women explainer video

2017-03-08 Thread Florence Devouard

Hello everyone

Wiki Loves Women is officially launching its presentation video today.

Please check it out here and tell us what you think :
https://vimeo.com/207432965

It is also on Commons :
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Wiki_loves_Women_-_English_WebM_-_Final.webm

This video was a partnership between WikiAfrica, Goethe Institute and
Blink Tower.

It brought quite a few challenges... such as myself being completely
happy with the exact terms of the script, succeeding to get every
element of the video under a free licence including the background
music, getting a nice african women voice for the narrative, getting
curly hair rather than flat ones, identifying nice examples of western
as well as african concerns... etc. We tried to be as inclusive as possible.

Well, we hope you like it.
If you do... please litterally "like" the video and "like" our facebook page

A French version is currently being recorded and should follow shortly.

Last, we would love to see the video subtitled in many langages. If you
want to give a hand for the translation, please get in touch with us (by
email, or twitter, or facebook, or on our meta talk page :
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wiki_Loves_Women)

I'll set up a page for translation on meta shortly.

[Wikimedia-l] More politics: "WMF Annual Report"

2017-03-08 Thread Stephen Philbrick
Three points:

When I first saw the document, I was exceedingly unhappy, but fortuitously,
I was unable to respond at the time due to RL travel. Fortuitous, because
my writeup would have been a pale version of Risker's excellent response,
so if anyone hasn't managed to read all the posts on this subject, please
make sure to read that one. In short, this is an exceedingly bad idea.

My small contribution is to make a positive point - I'm impressed at the
number of people who observed that the content very much mirrored their own
beliefs, yet they were adamant that this should not be a Wikimedia
Foundation document. It might well be an award-winning presentation for
some advocacy group, but it doesn't feel right for this Foundation. Some
has asked what aspects are disconsonant with the Wikimedia Mission, but
that's the wrong question. When one's prime directive is to "given free
access to the sum of all human knowledge", almost by definition, no subject
is "outside" our mission. It is a different question to determine which
subjects best summarize our core mission.

Third, while this discussion has been most illuminating, I share the
concerns of those who wonder where we go from here. I don't even know if we
are viewing a draft, and there is a potential for change, or if it has
already been finalized and we are merely evaluating the mistakes.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Status of the Code of Conduct for technical spaces

2017-03-08 Thread Pine W
I am not sure that I agree with that closure. There have been several
concerns mentioned in the talk page and in email threads, and it's not
clear to me that the document should be moving forward without an RfC on
the whole document. If I had time to look into this further I would be
considering reverting Brion's closure as premature in the absence of an RfC
on the whole document. Unfortunately I'm buried in other issues at the
moment and I would need to do a detailed look at the talk page and its
archives before I felt certain about proceeding with a reversion. Someone
who has the time to read the talk page carefully may wish to contest/revert
the close.

I'm not looking for more reasons to have drama about that document, but I'm
very uncomfortable proceeding with that document without an RfC on the
whole document.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] More politics: "WMF Annual Report"

2017-03-08 Thread Rogol Domedonfors
The UNWTO report you link to refers to 1186M "torist arrivals". That is
not the same as 1186M diffeent people. Did your correspondant explicitly
address that difference, or are you assuming that every tourist makes just
one trip abroad in a year, and if so, why, since it is patently not correct?

I really like the video, and I like the South-African dialect. Great job,
Florence & Isla!

For the subtitles I'd suggest to use amara.org. That's best (free) online
tool for subtitling videos; you can download the subtitles as a text file
and upload it then to Commons.

[Wikimedia-l] Status of the Code of Conduct for technical spaces

2017-03-08 Thread Quim Gil
Hi, let me share a status update about the Code of Conduct for Wikimedia
technical spaces, especially targeted to people not familiar with this CoC
and/or Wikimedia technical spaces.

https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Code_of_Conduct

The CoC drafting phase was completed yesterday [0], 18 months after a
kick-off session at the Wikimania 2015 Hackathon. Since then, 142 unique
editors have contributed to the Talk page through 147 sections, 21 voting
rounds abut sections of the CoC announced through the main technical
communication channels, and a total of 2,718 edits.[1] That Talk page has
88 watchers, about 20 editors have participated regularly in discussions,
and about half of them heavily.[2] To put these numbers in context,
MediaWiki.org counts 1,420 active editors, and Phabricator 829.

The next step is to create the first Code of Conduct Committee, a process
defined in the CoC itself.[3] A subset of the Technical Collaboration team
at the Wikimedia Foundation [4] (which I am part of) is preparing an
announcement about the search of candidates, inviting everyone to volunteer
themselves or send us recommendations. We are tracking the progress of this
task in Phabricator [5] and we will communicate major updates in the CoC
Talk page and other technical venues as needed.

I hope this clarifies the current situation. If you have questions or
suggestions, please share them here or in the CoC Talk page.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] More politics: "WMF Annual Report"

2017-03-08 Thread Zachary McCune
Hi all -

Wanted to follow up on my message from last Thursday, March 2nd.[1] As
detailed, we are making changes to the Annual Report site that should be
reflected today.[2]

Per suggestions we are exploring randomization of the facts displayed in
the index page carousel. The ordering on the Consider the Facts page will
be updated to begin, as discussed, with "Wikipedia is updated almost 350
times a minute". [3]

I also want to share that in adding citations to the "One in six people
visited a foreign country in 2016" fact, I followed SJ's advices and
emailed the UNWTO to explicitly confirm their 1186 million international
tourist statistic.[4] This morning I received a response from Ruth Gomez
Sobrino, Media Officer stating "Yes, this is true….and it will be 1,800 in
2030." So we are keeping this fact as is, and adding a citation note to add
proper context.

Thanks,

Zack

[Wikimedia-l] Occupation of Women on WikiData

2017-03-08 Thread Florence Devouard

This is a tool done by Envel Le Hir using WikiData and published today.

I actually inspired him the idea during a conference, when talking of my
desire to get generic data about women professionnal occupation. My main
argument is that I felt many of the added biographies about women were
about actors, singers, or football players. Much less about politicians
and business. But it was a "guess" and I wanted more hard data.

And apparently... he got busy

http://tools.dicare.org/gaps/gender.php

Ok.
Hard data (1950-2005 birth dates):
* 80% of the biographies of porn actors are about women.
* 98.3% of beauty pageant contestants are about women.
* 24% of politicians are about women
* 8.4% of computer scientists are about women.

Or ... In Algeria... the more popular occupation of women by far is...
Volley Ball !

In France... actors.
And in Guinea... well... hard to say... only 17 biographies about
Guinean women anyway.

have few statements [1]. Another associated thing is that once there is a
sufficiently representative part of the data, statistically the numbers
shown by Envil Le Hir will remain similar; there will be no significant
change. However, given that people like myself have been hard at work
adding data from Wikipedias, particularly the English Wikipedia, the bias
of these Wikipedias will have transfered to Wikidata.

There are two types of data; what interests the English Wikipedia editors
and the extend categories have been added to the "outlier" articles. The
consequence is that while I love the stats I expect that with more interest
for the subjects that are not common, we will find that the numbers for the
countries that get less attention will change significantly more than for
the subjects that are the bread and butter of the more popular Wikipedias.
Thanks,
  GerardM

This is a tool done by Envel Le Hir using WikiData and published today.

I actually inspired him the idea during a conference, when talking of my
desire to get generic data about women professionnal occupation. My main
argument is that I felt many of the added biographies about women were
about actors, singers, or football players. Much less about politicians
and business. But it was a "guess" and I wanted more hard data.

And apparently... he got busy

http://tools.dicare.org/gaps/gender.php

Ok.
Hard data (1950-2005 birth dates):
* 80% of the biographies of porn actors are about women.
* 98.3% of beauty pageant contestants are about women.
* 24% of politicians are about women
* 8.4% of computer scientists are about women.

Or ... In Algeria... the more popular occupation of women by far is...
Volley Ball !
In France... actors.
And in Guinea... well... hard to say... only 17 biographies about
Guinean women anyway.

[Wikimedia-l] World Mime Day Edit-a-thon 2017

2017-03-08 Thread Ivana Guslarević
Hello everyone!

I’m writing you in behalf of Wikimedia Serbia, regarding to organizing the
second World Mime Day edit-a-thon.

Last year Wikimedia Serbia collaborated with World Mime Organization
, whose president is Marko Stojanovic
,
famous actor in Serbia, mime artist and acting professor. Along with this
organization and Singidunum University
 we successfully
realized this event
.

The edit-a-thon aims to have international character. In 2016 Wikimedians
and Wikipedians from Macedonia and Armenia joined us in celebrating this
day by writing about notable mime artist, theaters and mime plays.

The support for this event came from the United nations as well: Ms. Irena
Vojackova-Sollorano, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident
Representative for the Republic of Serbia, visited the edit-a-thon
 and praised the volunteers mission.

This year we are planing to do the same and we are inviting everyone who is
interested in this topic and who thinks that GLAM cooperation could be
achieved. World Mime Organization has a network of mime artists and
theaters worldwide, so you can use Marko as a contact to reach local
theaters and artist.

The Meta page is created, and you can sign and join the project
.
There is also an event page on Serbian Wikipedia
.

If you need any additional information, please contact me.

Best regards,

Ivana Guslarevic

Now it is too late anyway, but the committee may want to check whether they

That's something local community has to decide and when they decide to do so,
they will have to submit their request to phabricator. See [1].

So no. Could we have it and if so, THEN we may ask he Haitian community if

maps of Haiti.

I don't understand your point. To be honest, I don't understand the
relation between Wikimaps (I understand it's this:

On the Italian Wikipedia we can see OSM maps of Haiti (see
https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haiti on the top right the link "Mappa"
will popup the OSM map of Haiti); I guess the community asked at some
point.
I don't know how it works on mobiles, and whether it would work on
Wikipedia Zero programs, but on a technical level it is definitely
doable.

[Wikimedia-l] Maps for Haiti

2017-03-08 Thread Gerard Meijssen
Hoi,
A lot of effort has gone into getting ready to support OSM in our projects.

What I want the Wikimedia Foundation is to allow the use of OSM maps in the
Haitian Wikipedia because existing maps are largely not in sync with the
reality in Haiti. As I understood from information at the website of
Doctors without Borders, much of the infrastructure is gone and it is
problematic to know what exists. They rely on OSM.

By providing the best maps to the Haitian Wikipedia we provide a relevant
service. I understand that we do support OSM in Wikivoyage.

Could we please support OSM maps in the Haitian Wikipedia.

Hello,

In short:
*  get community consensus
* fill a task in Phabricator for #wikimedia-site-requests
* profit!

The full explanation:

The Wikimedia Foundation renders OpenStreet map tiles on servers hosted
and maintained internally. The entry point can be seen at:

   https://maps.wikimedia.org/

The integration in wiki projects is made possible by the MediaWiki
extension Kartographer:
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:Kartographer

That extension is enabled on every public wikis:

 'wmgUseKartographer' => [
 'default' => true,
 'private' => false,
 ],

By default we only enable which is a link that when clicked
popup a map for the given latitude/longitude at some zoom level. Example:

Example: https://ht.wikipedia.org/wiki/Itilizatè:Hashar

To enable embedded maps, one needs to enable extra settings. You would
want to fill a task in Phabricator using #wikimedia-site-requests and a
requirement is to have community consensus about it. Typically done on
the Wiki equivalent of a village pump.

Past examples:

Finish wikipedia https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T151591
Norwegian wikipedia https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T154021

The technical change is absolutely trivial. I can not tell about its
implication for the mobile Zero data plan though. I am assuming that
maps.wikimedia.org is whitelisted.

cheers,
