[Wikimedia-l] FR, EN, and IT editors: Please participate in a labeling campaign about verifiability of unsourced statements!

2018-08-22 Thread Jonathan Morgan
Hello everyone,

If you are an editor of the French, Italian or English Wikipedia, and you
are interested in contributing to technologies for improving verifiability
of Wikipedia articles, please read on—we need your help!

In the context of the Knowledge integrity
 program, we (the
WMF Research
team ) are studying ways to flag unsourced
statements needing a citation

using machine learning, with the aim of identifying areas where adding high
quality citations is particularly urgent or important. Following the
success of the first labeling campaign
,
we now need to collect additional, high-quality labeled data regarding
why sentences
need citations.

You are invited to participate in a second annotation task
.
We used your input from the last experiment to generate a taxonomy of
reasons

why editors add citations. With this taxonomy now embedded in the
interface, the annotation experience will be much faster and fun.

If you are interested in participating, please go to
http://labels.wmflabs.org/ui/enwiki/ (replace enwiki with itwki or frwiki
if you speak Italian or French), login, scroll down, and request one (or
more) workset from the campaign *'**Labeling Unsourced Statements II’*.
For each task in a workset, the tool will show you an unsourced sentence in
an article and ask you to annotate it. You can then label the sentence as
needing an inline citation or not, and specify a reason for your choice
from a drop-down menu. If you can't respond please select 'skip'. You can
also sign up by (optionally) adding your name on this page

to receive updates about future campaigns and results from this research

If you have any question/comment on this project, please let us know by
contacting mir...@wikimedia.org or leaving a message on the talk page of
the project
.

Thank you for your time!

Miriam, Jonathan, and Dario

Hello,

I was merely suggesting that your reply on this list probably got
forgotten somehow. Phabricator is tailored toward tracking an issue from
its opening until its resolution. It is a great tool.

My apologizes to have phrased that in a bad and harsh way :-\

I guess Gregory Varnum (and others involved in the project) do monitor
the talk page. So you should get a reply there.

This would be the site who's privacy policy says

Okey cheap but is does display at certian lack of attention on your part.

The problem is you are asking us to learn our way around yet another
bit of software in order to raise issues. Not just learning how to
submit but also how to navigate around to see what is going on. Sure
I'm tech savy and I can work it out if I need to (although I don't see
how to zoom into tickets from this page without subscribing to them
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/wikimediafoundation.org/ ) but
its another barrier to entry, another bit of software I need to keep
track of.

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Deutschland: Annual Report 2017

2018-08-22 Thread Cornelius Kibelka
Hi all,
We have recently published our Annual Report 2017. If you would like
to learn more about examples of Wikimedia Deutschland's projects and
programs from last year, have a look:

https://2017.wikimedia.de/en

Thanks to the great response last year, our annual report is again
available as a visually appealing, responsive online version that also
works pretty well on mobile.

If you rather prefer to print it, you can do so as well: Our report is
available on Wikimedia Commons as a PDF version (3,96 MB):
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:WMDE_Annual_Report_2017_en.pdf

Happy reading,
Cornelius

[Wikimedia-l] Visiting Wikimedian for the Wikimedia Conference 2019

2018-08-22 Thread Cornelius Kibelka
Hi all,

In preparation for the upcoming Wikimedia Conference 2019 – which will take
place from March 29 to March 31 in Berlin, Germany[1] – we again launch a
call for a “Visiting Wikimedian”. This initiative aims to transfer
practical knowledge from the German chapter to other Wikimedia movement
affiliates and provides us with an outside view.

The scope of a “Visiting Wikimedian” is mainly to support the organization
of the Wikimedia Conference in terms of logistics and program. The “Visiting
Wikimedian” will be involved in all essential steps of the planning and
organizing process and will be able to contribute in multiple ways. We are
open to designing the tasks together, according to the Visiting Wikimedian’s
skills and experiences and her or his affiliate’s needs. We are especially
looking for a person who can apply the knowledge to an upcoming event, for
example if the affiliate is hosting a regional or international conference.

You can find more information about the initiative and all application
details on Meta.[2] We had three Visiting Wikimedians over the last years,
check also their blost posts on the linked on the Meta page.

If you are interested in becoming a Visiting Wikimedian, please check the
conditions and details on Meta and apply to wm...@wikimedia.de until
September 19, 2019 (incl).

Best regards,
Cornelius

perhaps you can provide a link to where they did so.

Had I seen anyone point that out I would have commented then, as I do

Indeed so; for the same reason as I indicated above, and as others
have pointed out in this thread.

Were I to perform that redundant clerical task, perhaps they would.

That's rather an odd assertion, given that I posted a pointer to my
last update on this list, here:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Talk:Wikimedia_Foundation_website=18292898=18291338

being the talk page of a page Gregory Varnum has told us, in this very
thread, to use for giving feedback. I note that Gregory has since
edited that talk page, so can be presumed to have seen it; albeit he
did not give a reply.

Agree with Jane. Wow. For those unaware, Antoine Musso is a WMF
Software developer, which you would never know based on their email
signature.

Hey fellow long-term unpaid volunteers. Remember that the WMF was
created by us not that long ago, and had a single mission, to support
us volunteers and our shared open knowledge mission?

A drip, drip of "communication failures", along with the core
Americanocentic obsession with hearing praise and ignoring critics
must change, or we will all eventually take the hint that we are
neither wanted or needed here, and find or establish a new and more
rewarding place to have fun. Do we really need a revolution to flip
the WMF upside down, or is there a better way to speedily reshape the
WMF so it regains its focus on the outside world rather than the
brilliance of its employees?

So your concerns will be acknowledged once they make their way to

Until you do so, your concerns will stay under the radar on this list.
