[Wikimedia-l] Remember Wikipedia Zero.. Where is the research about the effects of its demise?

2019-11-24 Thread Gerard Meijssen
Hoi,
The BBC shows how dramatically expensive internet is in Africa.. For in my
opinion local political reasons Wikipedia Zero has terminated. That is ok
up to a point; the point being that we understand the consequences from
this action.

Given that our data is NOT local, people have to pay a premium. What are we
going to do to compensate for expensive Wikipedia that replaced Wikipedia
Zero? Did we study the effects or are we not interested in the consequences
of our actions?
Thanks,
   GerardM

Re: [Wikimedia-l] TLS

2019-11-24 Thread Todd Allen
There comes a time at which "deprecated" has to turn into "no longer
supported". Unfortunately, there are inevitably some people left who that
will inconvenience, but without that, systems collapse under the weight of
providing legacy support for obsolete, rarely-used protocols.

If said obsolescence causes a security risk as well, there's really no
question to be had; has to be done.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] TLS

2019-11-24 Thread Amir Sarabadani
There are several versions of TLS. TLS1.1 end of life is soon and it will
be out of support very soon, most browsers will remove it in 2020. You
should upgrade to support at least TLS1.2 which was released more than ten
years ago. Upgrading to a new version is not that complicated. Just update
your browser.

We stopped serving SSL altogether a while back. One big reason for this
deprecation is not just security of people who use the old browsers but
also people who use a secure and modern system as well. There's something
called downgrade attack [1]. Using this attack, a secure connection (in a
modern setup) can be easily compromised by forcing them to use old
protocols like TLS 1.1 (or worse, SSL) instead of the secure ones.

I'm all for giving the most access to everyone in this world but not at the
cost of compromising security everyone else.

Why are you attempting to connect using old versions of TLS?

[Wikimedia-l] TLS

2019-11-24 Thread Benjamin Ikuta

Was support for legacy TLS temporarily discontinued or something?

I noticed I couldn't connect the other day, but now it seems I can again.

For what it's worth, I strongly oppose any measure that makes Wikimedia
projects less accessible.

[Wikimedia-l] Meet Srpska 2019

2019-11-24 Thread WМ RepublikaSrpska
Hi all!

It is my pleasure to inform you on behalf of the Wikimedia Community of
Republic of Srpska that the realization of the Meet Srpska 2019 project has
started with us. This is a contest that takes place on Serbian Wikipedia,
aimed at creating content related to Republic of Srpska.

In addition to the competitions that are the mainstay of the project, there
are other activities in the background - editing workshops and photo tours
of a local character. Also, a cooperation with a few of international Wiki
partners has been established: Wikimedia Community User Group Greece,
Wikimedians
of the Levant , GLAM Macedonia User Group, Wikimedia Russia and Don
Wikimedians User Group. By the end of December, they will organize thematic
activities in their countries and on their home Wikipedia, in which
articles on Republic of Srpska will be translated.

If anyone wants to join and contribute to the project, they can do so
through this page <Википедија:Упознај Српску 2019/Welcome!>.

Best,

Bojana Podgorica
