Yes.

Any news on the notifications? Giving one or two months to affected

[Wikimedia-l] Swedish Wikipedia reach 1 million (with support of bots)

2013-06-16 Thread Anders Wennersten
Yesterday sv:wp reached 1 M articles. The one who did the passing was a
bot generated article of a butterfly
http://sv.wikipedia.org/wiki/Erysichton_elaborata.

The bot behind this article is Lsjbot who creates articles from the
database Catalogue of Life
http://www.catalogueoflife.org/services/res/2011AC_26July.zip which
(complemented by other databases) which holds data of around 1.5 million
species. The bot genrates about 5000 new articles per day and has
generated just under 400 000 of the sv:wps million and continues...

The guy who runs he bot is a member of the Swedish chapters board
http://se.wikimedia.org/wiki/Kandidater_2013/Sverker_Johansson and is in
his civil life a University teacher. In this capacity he is also a guest
lecturer at the university of the Phillipines where he stayed the last
couple of months (and the bot was on hold). He is there active in
Cebuano-Wikipedia http://ceb.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unang_Panid and
supporting their local community, and he is now running his bot on their
wikipedia as well as on the Warai-Warai Wikipedia
http://war.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syahan_nga_Pakli. So perhaps at the end of
the year these two language versions will also pass the 1 million mark!

I would say our experience is that it doesn't affect the number of human
editors at all in any way. A couple of people run bots that create very
short articles about taxons or other stuff that, to be honest, probably
wouldn't have been created otherwise. These articles have very few readers.
Why on Earth would this discourage us?

Our main problem is that browsing Swedish Wikipedia using the random
article button isn't as fun as it used to be. That's probably fixable.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Swedish Wikipedia reach 1 million (with support of bots)

2013-06-16 Thread Anders Wennersten
I meant we should give credit to the extremely clever PEOPLE behind the
bots. And stop handling proper bot generated article as second class.
Their data is actually better verified then most of the others

And what we find is that the bots cannot build knowledge (which is our
aim) without the existence of very sound ground articles. What is the
value of a botgenereted lake article if the adm area it lies in is missing?

And in Swedish Wikipedia the botgenerated articles has meant a boom to
the community morale. To work with an article of a place or adm area
feels much better when it is used by and using the botgerneted lake article

Is it a coincidence that we now see the growth of these competent
botgenerated article in nl:wp, sv.wp and it:wp? Not the top five but
very alert and half big communities. (next one seems to be Catalan and
norweigian)

There exist a world outside the big ones, where we are eager to learn
from each other and make good progress in our common goal, free
knowledge to all!

Article count milestones are nice!
However, I remind those who were distracted in 2008 that article count
is a largely irrelevant piece of our statistics since 2008; both
stats.wikimedia.org and www.wikipedia.org (plus the other project
portals) don't use it at all to rank projects, etc.

Is it a coincidence that we now see the growth of these competent
botgenerated article in nl:wp, sv.wp and it:wp?

To me it seems the other wikis are rather stable. There is no wiki in
top ten with 50 % bot created articles and after sv.wiki (13th) you have
to reach positions 20th (vi) and 24th (vi) to find similar amounts.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Swedish Wikipedia reach 1 million (with support of bots)

2013-06-16 Thread Per A.J. Andersson
Milestones are nice. They're one big reason for celebrating,
once in a while. There are lots of others, but not all are this
definable and publicly palatable. Quality projects of various
kinds are ongoing all the time, and we need different kinds of
carrots to keep up the community interest at svwp. We need to
communicate our efforts in different dimensions, and this was
also the idea in our press release statement some hours ago.
Quantity and quality are no born enemies to each other, IMHO.

Personally I enjoy making small articles (in various subjects)
larger and better. I think this is a common motivator to many of
us, where the article creation can be a hassle with all the
multidimensional stuff involved. Lsjbot makes my enlarging a bit
easier. And the fact that Lsjbot now creates a fully sourced and
categorised Swedish-language wikispecies inside of Wikipedia
is a bonus.

Best of wishes,

 Hi WCA and friends,

we will have a phone meeting on Sunday, 16th of June @ 19:00 UTC [1]. More
details and the agenda can be found here:

 http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Chapters_Association/Meetings/2013-24

If you want to join, please contact me for the phone meeting number.

Please note there is an agenda point about current issues in the chapters.
If you have anything trouble (or, of course, good news) you'd like to
discuss, that's the time to do it.

I think we also should talk about the board elections and a chapter
 perspective on the candidates.

 Best,
 Markus

so, by getting the certificates from digicert, the traffic can easier
be snooped by the u.s. government. and only u.s. citizens are
protected by u.s. law. this gives a lot of trust :)

Your quote (when a company that uses a certificate authority located in
a country different than the one in which it holds user data) warns of
what happens when you use a *foreign* (not the same as where the servers
are) cert. Wikimedia uses DigiCert, a provider in the same country,
exactly what that recommends.

Your statement that the traffic can easier be snooped by the u.s.
government is false. If Wikimedia received a secret U.S. court order
to turn over certain data, the certificate would make no difference,
since the headquarters and servers are already in the U.S.

But using a U.S. provider reduces the WMF's vulnerability to additional
governments.

You do realize that every message has an unsubscribe option at the
bottom, right? That's the easiest way to get off of this list.

For future reference: I initiated the un-subscription process for
Mary contacted her off–list, so this will hopefully be resolved soon.

[Wikimedia-l] WCA/Journal: if you report anyway, why not in the Journal, too?

2013-06-16 Thread Ziko van Dijk
Hello,
In the WCA telephone conference we talked about the Journal. We were
discussing on useful content: what happened in your chapter, what events,
what contacts with national authorities, did you decide to become a FDC
chapter... a lot of things to report about. And we report anyway, in our
chapter reports, so why not putting the highlights in a short contribution
for the Journal?
Kind regards
Ziko
