Re: [Wikimedia-l] Community consultation + Wikimedia Foundation Executive Director selection process
I don't know what to think about a final community consultation on a specific name. Personally I suspect that I wouldn't be able to say anything about it, as with https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Executive_Director_Transition_Team/Update_9_December. Speaking of which, I wonder how the problems there were addressed: apparently they just expanded the search and reduced the number of people participating, but I see no answers to the question: «Have we been looking for a unicorn -- somebody who doesn't exist in the real world? [...] too insular? [...] unfairly comparing [...]?». If an answer was found, I'd like to know it. To me that only looked like a rhetorical question, because of course I have no idea what exact criteria/questions/interview practices are being applied or if unfair comparisons were made. To avoid another fiasco, it would probably be useful to publish on Meta an anonymised table of candidates, pointing out strengths and weaknesses in a single line for each. Then one could say «oh, look, criterion 175 made 12 otherwise awesome candidates fail, do we really need it?». However the end RFC put to the community need not be complex. Most of the community will not care about legal or technical detail, they just want the conclusion. You may wish to consider whether the technical and legal aspects might be better explored as essays and included as background in future proposals, not the meat of the proposal itself. Personally, were I leading this team, I would make it a requirement that the proposal is limited to 50 words. Punchy, factual, neutral. For example, a simple yes/no RFC on adding an ingestion process for MP4 video upload might now be successful. The legal aspect can be as simple as WMF legal has determine this poses no risk to the WMF, uploaders or reusers, refer to essay and the technical aspect could be See essay for an explanation of optimized transcoding, workflow processes and test examples. There's nothing new in keeping it simple. Also I think some of the wanted more detailed feedback and interaction with the FDC as a group is very hard to implement considering how our deliberation process for now is set up . But feedback is always a good thing and hopefully this feedback can be processed to improve the process and give all involved a happier feeling of the funds dissemination in the future. Re: [Wikimedia-l] This weird trick will make readers of mass messages on village pumps happier
(Sorry about the mis-post. Apparently hitting command-return sends a message... who knew.) James Forrester wrote: On 17 January 2014 08:24, Amir E. Filed as https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=60176 Agreed that it's not great. On the other hand, if you're communicating with a global audience, there's a little expectation that it'll be slightly more work, in my opinion. :-) This same point is true of mass messaging generally, regardless of language or wrapper divs or what-have-you. If you're doing something once or you're doing something ten-thousand times _at_ once, you need to appropriately take the time to make sure you're crossing your Ts and dotting your Is before hitting send. (And for the record, MassMessage will not be implementing that command-return shortcut. Gah.) Not including a timestamp is another pattern of behavior that causes issues: due to the way that archive bots operate, they need an identifiable timestamp. I believe the thinking there was to add some JavaScript to check for the presence of ~ or equivalent and warn the user if it's not present (just warn, not stop). We could do something similar for dir= and such perhaps. Or we could add a my content is in [lang name] drop-down menu that defaults to the user's language preference, maybe. div lang=en dir=ltr class=mw-content-ltr I guess you'd need to map language name to lang= and then have a dictionary for which are rtl and which are ltr, which could then also control the class? Bleh. Or browsers could just forgive us for our trespasses and not misbehave. Perhaps others have thoughts about how to do this well. It doesn't seem like a very easy problem, but maybe I'm missing the obvious. [Wikimedia-l] Affiliations Committee election results
Dear Community Members, I am happy to let you know that the Affiliations Committee has finished the selection process for the 2014-2015. The six sitting members of the Committee will be joined by four very experienced Wikimedians: - Cynthia Ashley-Nelson - Kirill Lokshin - Galileo Vidoni (re-appointment) - Lodewijk Gelauff (re-appointment) Along with the vast Wikimedia experience they bring to the Committee, we really appreciate the organisational development, governance and language skills that are being brought on-board (and stays on-board with the re-appointments). I would like to thank everyone who has applied to a position in the Committee. While due to practical reasons, we could not accept everyone, but anyone who has considered applying and helping other volunteers through this Committee are a huge asset to this movement, and I really hope they will all find places and roles where they can help our movement grow. I would also like to thank our vice-chair, Carlos, who has run much of the selection process behind the scenes ensuring that both the applicants and the Committee members have a smooth experience.
