Our sympathy continues to go out to those who were closest to him, and to the many others whose lives he touched. We also reaffirm our belief that a spirit of openness is what makes the Internet such a powerful engine for economic growth, technological innovation, and new ideas. That's why members of the Administration continue to engage with advocates to ensure the Internet remains a free and open platform as technology continues to disrupt industries and connect our communities in ways we can't yet imagine. We will continue this engagement as we tackle new questions on key issues such as citizen participation in democracy, open access to information, privacy, intellectual property, free speech, and security. Found another article calling out Wikipedia. Are there also articles praising us? :-) https://medium.com/backchannel/less-than-zero-199bcb05a868 I do think that wikipedia zero is useful in the short term. I'm a bit worried about the long term though. Question: How do you predict wikipedia zero's effect on the internet in the long term? There are clearly going to be both positive and negative effects. Denying either is silly. What can we do to strengthen the positive effects, and how do we mitigate the negative? At what thresholds would wikipedia zero be stopped in some country and at what thresholds promoted? [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Fwd: Tilman Bayer joins Product Strategy Department
FYI :) -- Forwarded message -- From: Erik Moeller e...@wikimedia.org Date: Tue, Jan 6, 2015 at 1:50 PM Subject: Tilman Bayer joins Product Strategy Department To: Staff All wmf...@lists.wikimedia.org Hi all, It’s my pleasure to announce that Tilman Bayer is joining the Foundation’s Product Strategy department as Senior Analyst. I would like to thank Katherine Maher for supporting and helping to prepare this move from the Communications department. Tilman has been working with us since July 2011, and has been a Wikipedian since 2003. He is leading the development of the organization’s new quarterly report, and its integration with the quarterly review process. In his role in Communications, he has already coordinated our reports in their previous monthly format, and has kept detailed public minutes for the majority of quarterly reviews at WMF. He will continue to do so. He will ensure we not only continually refine and improve the quarterly goalsetting, review and reporting processes, but can also look for opportunities to highlight lessons learned - successes and failures - across the organization and the Wikimedia communities, so these can meaningfully inform our strategy. In addition, Tilman will bring his many years of experience as a volunteer and his insight into the many complexities and intricacies of the Wikimedia universe to bear with product-related research and analysis questions, supporting Product Managers and other team members as we dig into hard problems that benefit from his expertise, e.g. simplification of templates, translation tools, cross-wiki messaging tools, mathematics editing, etc. Tilman was previously responsible for many day-to-day communications responsibilities and supported or led key communications initiatives. These responsibilities will be transitioned to other Communications team members, including Fabrice Florin who is joining the team for 6 months (separate announcement to follow). Please join me in congratulating Tilman to this new role. Tilman - thank you for taking this on; I look forward to continuing our work together! [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Joining the WMF Communications team
Hi folks, I am happy to announce that I will be joining the Wikimedia Foundation's Communications team as Movement Communications Manager for a period of six months. I have really enjoyed my work as product manager at WMF in the past 3 years, leading the development of new tools like Notifications, Thanks, Beta Features, Media Viewer and other multimedia products [1]. One of the lessons I learned during that time is that 'better communications' are really important to make our movement more effective. I also think that growing a 'culture of kindness' is key if we want to engage a broader community [2]. I hope to support both of these goals in my new role. Starting this week, I will be working with the communications team on the Wikimedia blog and general WMF/movement communications. My focus for the blog will include improving contributor workflow for community members and WMF staff, and providing editorial guidance for contributors. I will also act as the main contact point for authors submitting new blog posts, and shepherd the publication process. Within movement communications, I will work to improve the availability, distribution, and timeliness of communications from the WMF to the broader community. I will also manage a range of movement communications tasks previously handled by Tilman Bayer, who is transitioning to the WMF Product team as Senior Analyst. One of my new duties is managing this WikimediaAnnounce-l list. Because this list gets so much spam, we manually review all submissions several times per day, until a reliable machine filter can be implemented. Please contact me if you have an urgent announcement that needs to go out immediately, or if you have any issues about this list. I’d like to thank all my colleagues on the multimedia and product teams -- as well as our many community champions -- for being such wonderful collaborators over the past few years. I am proud of what we accomplished together, and I hope that the features we created can help many more people share knowledge productively in years to come. Special thanks to Erik Moeller for his thoughtful guidance throughout the past three years -- and for making this transition possible. Kudos as well to Tilman for being such a wonderful coach and getting me up to speed on tasks he used to handle so efficiently. :) I'm delighted to take on this new assignment, and look forward to more collaborations with you all in the coming year. Re: [Wikimedia-l] WMF is shutting down grantmaking for good projects for 3 months for no reason
Maybe the carrot is the site notice to advertise it, and the fear is that too many projects are being proposed? Which is good. But I am with lodewijk that this is not the way to go. It only exposes the main weakness of the current grant making process. It is global, central and has a lot of administrative overhead attached to it, mainly driven by Anglo American policies difficult to understand in the rest of the world why they would be necessary at all. it leads to a bottleneck not necessary. The sitenotice is nice. But it could be used better if grantmaking is distributed like all the other content and community work, imo. Great question. Current thinking is to do the usual announcing on mailing lists, blog/social media, village pumps, etc, as well as experimenting with running Central Notice banners. Would like to attract folks from various wikis who have interest in this theme and ability to lead a project in their community, beyond the usual (relatively small) slice who regularly participate in lists like these or in the usual grantmaking discussions on meta-wiki. And although outside media could help bring total newbies to contribute ideas, discussion, and other forms of participation, it is pretty darn important to have at least 1 experienced Wikimedian on a funded team in order to lead and execute a useful community project, so in-movement (particularly on-wiki) promotion is a priority. Any thoughts/suggestions would be welcome! TL:DR I see the stick, but where is the carrot? [1] I understand from the explanations that the reason for not accepting any non-gender-gap focused grants for several months is because of the expected workload on the staff in reviewing applications and supporting the projects that do get funded. However, what I don't understand is what added incentive there is for people to submit grant applications on the chosen topic (in this instance it is gender-gap, but it could be other topics in the future)? Since it is already possible to submit a gender-gap focused grant, how does the refusal to accept other kinds of project submissions increase the number/quality/variety of gender-gap grants? I can see the unfortunate possibility for: - some grants to be re-written with a false veneer of gender-gap focus (pink-washing) simply to access the money - valid (but non gender-gap focused) grant applications having to wait until after the 3-month project, and potentially having to cancel altogether depending on the volunteer's availability. I think this is what Lodewijk was referring to when he called it a negative campaign - there is a DISincentive for other kinds of grant applications, but no apparent specific incentive for the desired type of application.
