[Wikimedia-l] Outreachy Round 23–call for projects and mentors now open!

2021-08-27 Thread Srishti Sethi
Hello everyone,

Wikimedia is participating in the winter edition of this year's Outreachy <
https://www.outreachy.org/> [1] (December 2021–February 2022)! The deadline
to submit projects on the Outreachy website is *September 30th, 2021*.

If you would like to share an idea for a project that you would like to
mentor or you are not familiar with the program and want to learn anything
more about it, feel free to reply to this email or leave a note on <
https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/T289893> [2].

*About the Outreachy program*:
Outreachy offers three-month internships to work remotely in Free and Open
Source Software (FOSS), coding and non-coding projects with experienced
mentors. These internships run twice a year–from May to August and December
to March. Interns are paid a stipend of USD 5,500 for the three months of
work. They also have a USD 500 stipend to travel to conferences and events.
Interns often find employment after their internship with Outreachy
sponsors or jobs that use the skills they learned during their internship.
This program is open to both students and non-students. Outreachy expressly
invites the following people to apply:

   - Women (both cis and trans), trans men, and genderqueer people.
   - Anyone who faces under-representation, systematic bias, or
discrimination in the technology industry in their country of residence.
   - Residents and nationals of the United States of any gender who are
   Black/African American, Hispanic/Latinx, Native American/American Indian,
Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, or Pacific Islander.

See a blog post highlighting experiences and outcomes of interns who
participated in a previous round of Outreachy with Wikimedia <
https://techblog.wikimedia.org/2021/06/02/outreachy-round-21-experiences-and-outcomes/>
[3]

Some tips for mentors for proposing projects:

   - Follow this task description template when you propose a project in
   Phabricator: <
   https://phabricator.wikimedia.org/tag/outreach-programs-projects/> [4].
Add #Outreachy (Round 23) tag to it.
   - Remember, the project should require an experienced developer ~15 days
to complete and a newcomer ~3 months.
   - Each project should have at least two mentors, and one of them should
   hold a technical background.
   - When it comes to picking a project, you could propose one that is:
  - Relevant for your language community or brings impact to the
  Wikimedia ecosystem in the future.
  - Welcoming and newcomer-friendly and has a moderate learning curve.
  - A new idea you are passionate about, there are no deadlines
attached to it; you always wanted to see it happen but couldn't
due to lack
  of resources help!
  - About developing a standalone tool (possibly hosted on Wikimedia
Toolforge), with fewer dependencies on Wikimedia's core
infrastructure, it
doesn't necessarily require a specific programming language.

See roles and responsibilities of an Outreachy mentor <
https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Outreachy/Mentors> [5].

We look forward to your participation!

Cheers,
Srishti

(On behalf of the organization team)

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Foundation Board: trustee reappointment, extension, and newly posted minutes and resolutions

2021-08-27 Thread Nataliia Tymkiv
Dear all,

I wanted to bring to your attention that the minutes from Wikimedia
Foundation Board of Trustees meetings since April 15, 2021, are published
and linked from here [1]. The resolutions since June 1, 2021, are linked
from here [2].

Also, there was a special board meeting on August 26, 2021, to renew the
term of Tanya Capuano (Audit Committee chair, Human Resources (HR) and
Transition Committees (TC) member) for another 3 years. Her term was
expiring September 1, 2021, and she graciously agreed to continue serving
[3].

Three other trustees’ terms were about to expire -- Lisa Lewin (Board
Governance Committee (BGC) chair, HR Committee alternate), Dariusz
Jemielniak (HR Committee chair, BGC and TC member), and James Heilman
(Special Projects Committee chair), so we renewed/prolonged their terms
“until November 1, 2021 or until the Board appoints a replacement for that
seat, whichever comes first” [4], [5]. Currently we are searching for a
replacement for Lisa’s seat (a Board selected seat), and the last two seats
are up for replacement by board appointing candidates from the current
Community and/or Affiliate nomination process underway per our Bylaws [6].
These extensions and reappointment will allow us to have the minimal
authorized number of Trustees (9) per our Bylaws [7].

Best regards,
antanana / Nataliia Tymkiv

Oh, thanks.

I don't know who he is. His manner led me to believe he represented the WMF in
some capacity.

Someone who downplays the danger of far-right activism within education is
either ignorant or some kind of nazi themselves.

2021-08-27 Thread Lionel

Hillbillyholiday,

For my doctoral thesis, I would be interested to know more about these
wikipedia articles "completely controlled by terrorist groups". Is it
possible to have references? Some links to the Wikipedia articles in
question or to press articles as scientific ones for example. Thanks in
advance !

Mike,

I am appalled by your sneering condescension of Andreas.

This is a researcher and journalist who has worked diligently for a
decade to identify, examine and expose the systematic failings which
beset Wikipedia. He generously offers practical soultions to problems
the WMF is unaware of. It is unquestionable that he has knows more
about and has done more to improve the encyclopedia than you.

As a spokesperson for a charity that exists to promote knowledge, your
sarcastic and dismissive attitude is utterly shameful.

If you think only a few "insignificant" sites like Croatian or Japanese
Wikipedia have areas run by ultranationalists, think again -- English
Wikipedia has articles completely controlled by terrorist groups right
now. I would tell you which ones but it seems you are are uninterested
and unconcerned by extremist groups successfully pushing their agenda
on this ostensibly educational website.

Administrators and arbitrators are aware of the problem and have been
for years. So far they have been unwilling or unable to act decisively.

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Wikimedia CEE Online Meeting 2021

2021-08-27 Thread Kiril Simeonovski
Hi Lea and Ashwin,

Thank you for your questions.

The slogan "Meet for a Better Future!" was conceived through a
brainstorming that we had in our Telegram group. We all agreed that we want
to focus on the "future" and this word has easily entered the slogan. A
more challenging task was to find a suitable verb and contenders other than
"meet" were "reach", "open", "build" and "connect". At the end, however, we
settled for the simple "meet" and also added "better" to reflect our
expectation for an improvement. I am glad that you were on a similar line
of thought for WikidataCon 2021.

The main language of the conference will be English but we also welcome and
plan to include sessions in Russian. In the same vein as last year, we will
provide simultaneous language interpretation from English to Russian and
vice versa. Given that the CEE region consists of a large number of
communities whose representatives use only Russian as an international
language, the easiest way to break the language barrier and enable these
people to take part and share their ideas and learning was by introducing
this language.

Best regards,
Kiril
