 Hi all,

TLDR; Want to learn new technical skills to help improve your wiki?
Sign up for workshops on scripts and bot development, organized by the
 small wiki toolkits initiative: <
 https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Small_wiki_toolkits/Workshops> [1].

Small wiki toolkits (SWT) is an initiative to build technical capacity
in smaller language wikis by developing toolkits, conducting workshops, and
 providing technical support <
 https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Small_wiki_toolkits> [2]. The first
set of workshops for 2022 will teach individuals how to automate work in
their wiki community by developing, maintaining, and hosting bots. These
trainings build upon the lessons learned from two regional initiatives in
 2021:
 [3].

To sign up for a workshop, add your signature under a specific workshop
 section on this page <
 https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Small_wiki_toolkits/Workshops> [4].
The first workshop is scheduled for February 25th, 16:00 UTC. The
organizing team will share more details on mailing lists and on your talk
page closer to the date of the workshop.

The SWT Organizing Team is also exploring issuing digital certificates
and badges to attendees of these workshops. More information on that will
be available in the coming weeks.

We look forward to your participation!

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Sanctions against the Russian Federation; support for Ukrainian Wikimedians

2022-03-01 Thread Bodhisattwa
Hello,

OSM Poland community is working on enriching map of border with Ukraine to
help Ukrainian refugees access reception points.

https://dopomoha.pl/en/#map=7/50.538/24.055

Pull request can be submitted here.
https://github.com/openstreetmap-polska/ua-2022-map

As Wikimedians, we could do something similar which can be of practical use
to the Ukrainian people for now like enriching more information and data
about Western Ukraine, Poland, Romania, Hungary etc. in Ukrainian language
using which they might get some relief and can reorganize.

Changing the color of Wikipedia logo to Ukrainian flag have some major
issues though. It might show our solidarity but it also can show that we
take side in geopolitics questioning our neutrality. We hadn't changed
color during other invasions in recent times.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_invasions#2000%E2%80%93present .
That might raise question about our biasness towards certain players. But
anyway, it all depends on how the community thinks.

Regards,
Bodhisattwa

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Sanctions against the Russian Federation; support for Ukrainian Wikimedians

2022-03-01 Thread Valentin Nefedov
Thanks for your support! The best "sanctions" WMF can implement is raising
awareness about the whole situation. For example, the promotion of Ukraine's
Cultural Diplomacy Month 2022
.
About Russian Wikipedia: unfortunately, most likely it will get banned in
the Federation. More than 70 Russian Wikipedians wrote open letter to us on
our village pump

where they condemned the invasion, so WMF might support people who signed
this letter legally because of possible threats.

Best regards,
Renvoy

[Wikimedia-l] Our World in Data (OWID)

2022-03-01 Thread James Heilman
We at Wiki Project Med are working to get Our World in Data (OWID) working
within a mediawiki environment.

1) We have created a mirror of their website on WMF servers
. Hopefully this
has allowed us to address security and privacy concerns.

2) We have created an extension
 that allows
the use of this content within a mediawiki install

3) We have made a bunch of changes to formatting, such as removing the
logo, to make it compliant with WP practice and style. You can see an
example on MDWiki in the infobox here
.

My question to the movement is are their communities interested in using
this technology? There are about 4,000 of these graphs
. We of course will also need to develop
a framework for translation.
