My understanding so far is that encoding a verbatim copy is typically due to
'Overfitting'.

This is considered a type of bug. It is undesirable for many reasons
(technical, ethical, legal).

Models are (supposed to be) trained to prevent this as much as possible.

Clearly there was still work to be done in dec 2020 at the least.

Thanks for these links, Lauren. I think it could be a very interesting
research project (for WMF, affiliates or Wikimedia research community
members) to attempt to recall Wikimedia project content such as
Wikipedia articles via the GPT-3.5 or GPT-4 API, to begin quantifying
the degree to which the models produce exact copies (or legally
covered derivative works--as opposed to novel expressions).

I won't be able to join but am glad this is happening. I agree that it
would be good for WMF to engage with LLM providers on these questions
of attribution sooner rather than later, if that is not already
underway. WMF is, as I understand it, still not in any privileged
position of asserting or enforcing copyright (because it requires no
copyright assignment from authors) -- but it can certainly make legal
requirements clear, and also develop best practices that go beyond the
legal minimum.

Warmly,
Erik

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Wikimania 2024 will be hosted in …

2023-03-20 Thread Butch Bustria
Hello Everyone,

On behalf of the ESEAP Wikimania 2023 Core Organizing Team, we are
delighted on the announcement of the host of Wikimania 2024. We are here on
assistance to the Wikimedians of the CEE (Central and Eastern European
region) for their learning and technical needs.

ESEAP was at the early stages of planning on October 2019 already thinking
on making the conference hybrid, making it inclusive to those who cant
travel to our conference venue due to varying reasons from visa concerns,
anxiety of personally meeting strange people to sustainable development
advocacy. The pandemic that started in early 2020 strengthen our resolve on
the importance of remote participation.

We also value importance of in-person gathering as direct social
interaction has meaningful effect to many Wikimedians. That is why planning
for 2023 is somewhat of a challenge though we desire to be true to our
theme: Diversity, Collaboration, Future. We honor the diverse options of
Wikimedians whether they wish to physically come and personally meet the
Wikimedians that inspired them, virtually participate, share the Wikimania
spirit to their community though a regional satellite event, or simply
pre-record their presentation as a pragmatic approach.

We all expect the Wikimedians of CEE will craft the conference theme for
2024 as this serves as a foundation or anchor on how the program selection,
scholarship selection and other aspects of planning would look like.

We are looking forward to finally hand over the flag to the next host on
August 19. We have been waiting for this for four years, and it is not easy
to me to present at the Wikimania closing ceremony three times! 

Kind regards,
*Butch Bustria*

2023-03-20 Thread Brian Choo
Dear Wikimedians,

This message is to announce the seating of new members on the Interim Case
Review Committee (CRC).

For background, the Case Review Committee is a volunteer committee composed
of 10 experienced volunteers from across the Wikimedia movement. The CRC
reviews eligible Trust & Safety decisions that are appealed either by those
who originally requested the investigation or those who have been
sanctioned by them. For more information, please refer to the page about
the CRC on Meta-Wiki.[1]

Following the 2023 call for applications for the CRC,[2] the committee has
seated three new members, for a total of ten members. New members will
serve two-year terms. The terms of the seven current members have been
extended until 31 December 2023.

The ten members combined have nearly 1.5 million edits on various wikis and
100 years of experience on our projects. They represent membership on seven
different home wikis and numerous affiliates. They collectively hold
functionary rights across multiple projects, including administrator,
bureaucrat, checkuser, oversight, and advanced global permissions. Between
them, they have been involved in many key committees and organized groups.

For more information on the Case Review Committee’s work, please see the
reports page.[3]

I'd like to thank everyone who participated in this process for their
contributions, especially those who volunteered for this important role.

Our team is thrilled to have been chosen to host Wikimania in 2024. We are
committed to creating an outstanding event that will leave a lasting impact
on the Wikimedia Movement. With its rich history, culture, and
technological innovation, Cracow will be the perfect location for this

We want to thank the community members and organizations that supported our

Over the next few months, together with the 2023 Core Organizing Team and

We look forward to seeing you in Central and Eastern Europe next summer!

I am very excited to share that Wikimania 2024 will be hosted in the city

with a collaborative design and an experienced, enthusiastic team
supporting it [2]. At the crossroads of history, culture, and technology,
we are confident that the impact of Wikimania will be great for our

Bringing our movement’s beloved event to life is not simple and we took
many criteria into consideration. We were grateful for the expressions of
interest

received for hosting Wikimania in 2024, 2025, and beyond [4]. Announcing
host cities this far in advance is a new approach

to organizing Wikimania we are exploring [5]. In addition to the support we
provide as the stewards of Wikimania

we see great value in facilitating more time for organizers so they can
learn from each other in practice and strengthen their capacity [6], [7].
We hope to announce the hosts of Wikimania in 2025 and 2026 in the coming
months or at Wikimania 2023 in Singapore.

Once again, wholehearted congratulations to the 2024 Wikimania team. We

we are returning to the vibrant CEE region after 14 years. Looking forward
