[Wikimedia-l] To Wikimedians, with love from our donors

2019-02-14 Thread Caitlin Cogdill
In January, the WMF fundraising team asked our donors a single question: is
there anything you want to say to the volunteers who make the Wikimedia
projects possible? The result was enchanting. More than 5,000 donors took
the opportunity to express their thanks, gratitude, and love for the
contributors who give the world the joy of free and open knowledge. Today
is Valentine’s Day, a holiday that, at least in our modern world, is about
expressing love for the individuals in our lives who make the world just a
bit sweeter. We thought this was the perfect opportunity to pass all this
wikilove over to you. Today, we get to play Cupid, nurturing the lasting
partnership between our contributors and donors that has helped Wikipedia
blossom in its 18 years of existence.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Subject lines for WMF fundraising emails

2018-11-16 Thread Caitlin Cogdill
Hi all,

Thank you for sharing your concerns. We hear them and we take them
seriously. *As of today, we have pulled this subject line from our testing
rotation.*

On the Fundraising team, we pride ourselves on making data-driven
decisions, and there are many types of data inputs we process outside of
dollar amount raised. For example, how many people choose to unsubscribe
from our list or submit an abuse complaint when we send an email? Does a
certain subject line get very high opens but a low rate of donations per
open--indicating that it is more clickbait than effective content? How much
and what kind of feedback is our Donor Services team getting?

We watched these inputs closely while sending this subject line to donors.
Our unsubscribe and abuse rates were low, the donation per open rate was
even higher than usual, and while our Donor Services team flagged some
negative responses from donors, they determined these comments were not in
a significant volume.

That said, there is a final input which is harder to measure on a per-test
basis: how do we, our colleagues, and volunteers feel about our messaging?
This team cares deeply about Wikipedia and the Wikimedia Foundation, and
about the mission we all work to achieve. We want to represent it
faithfully, and do so in a way our readers and donors can engage with and
understand. This balance can be really hard to strike and it will always be
an ongoing challenge in our work.

We are grateful to be presented with this challenge and with the joy of
telling millions of people about this movement. Thank you for caring so
deeply, for all your contributions, and for keeping this feedback loop
alive.

Sincerely,
Caitlin

2018-06-18 Thread Caitlin Cogdill
*Hi Jim,Thanks for the suggestion. We’re only focusing on Facebook for this
first series of tests. We know its user base is both vast and global which
makes it an attractive option. We may consider testing other platforms in
the future. In regards to posting metrics, we will be releasing our annual
fundraising report this fall which will include information about this
experiment. Stay tuned for more.Best,Caitlin*

[Wikimedia-l] Second Fundraising experiment on Facebook

2018-06-15 Thread Caitlin Cogdill
other characteristics - age, gender, etc.

A large part of the value in running this experiment is to *learn* whether
there are any demographic differences in how people respond to our
messaging. If this experiment does give us compelling info about who is
more likely to donate, that is exciting! And we'll talk as a group about
what to do with that knowledge.

*Can users opt out?*

Of course. Users can hide individual ads if they are not of interest to
them. This is also something we can measure to better understand how to not
annoy or impose on social media users in future fundraising drives.

*Who is working on this?*

Fundraising is partnering with the social media folks in Communications to
run this test. The promotion and measurement of ads is being managed by a
small company called Middle Seat.

*Will you keep us in the loop?*

Absolutely. By July 15 we intend to share an overview of our testing so far.

Stay tuned for more updates!

Re: [Wikimedia-l] FW: My final email

2016-08-17 Thread Caitlin Cogdill
Hi Peter,

I can appreciate that the text on the page seems vague in terms of defining
to what list the opt-out will apply. We're going to edit the header on the
page to specifically say "Fundraising email". I hope that helps clarify for
other donors on multiple Wikimedia lists.

Thanks,
Caitlin

[Wikimedia-l] Introducing the newly redesigned WMF Shop

2014-04-15 Thread Caitlin Cogdill
Hello,

We are pleased to announce the Wikimedia Shop[1] has undergone a redesign
as of this afternoon. One of the shop's primary priorities for 2014 was to
make it more visually appealing and user friendly. It is our hope that
these changes will enable us to increase sales so that we can support more
community events through merchandise giveaways.

Thus far in 2014, the shop has supported chapters and community groups in
Thailand, Ghana, and Indonesia, and will be supporting a Wikipedia Zero
event in Bangladesh later this year. Our team has also reinvigorated the
Merchandise Giveaways Program [2], sending shirts to nominated users on a
weekly basis. We want our merchandise to help bring even more people to
Wikipedia and Wikimedia projects, and make currently involved community
members feel good about their work.

The shop redesign also marks the release of a new product: the limited
edition Wiki Loves Monuments Calendar[3]. While we are already a few months
into 2014, the quality of the images and work put in by Wikimedians was
reason enough to produce these calendars, but buy them while you can as
there is a very limited quantity! We look forward to displaying more
Wikimedia artifacts like this one in the future.

Please give us your comments on the new site design and help us continue to
improve the way we represent Wikimedia through discussion on the Wikimedia
Merchandise talk page[4], or feel free to contact me directly.

Thank you!
Caitlin

The hooded sweatshirt sure has kept me warm through the past couple of
winters. I certainly wish they would expand the product line. Slim
pickings. I've always wondered why the WMF has chosen to limit the
offerings. I think they should open it up to the community and ask people
what they want. And find a different vendor for the luggage/bags. In my
opinion, they appear low in quality, yet high in price.

So glad to hear the sweatshirt has been keeping you warm! The shop will be
expanding its product line in march, to include mugs, a new polo shirt, and
a few other items over the coming months. Point taken about the Timbuktu
bags; we can look into what else is available on the market. We really
value suggestions like these and welcome you to offer them on the talk page
on Meta as well https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Talk:Wikimedia_merchandise

And thanks Nemo for the VP reference, much appreciated.

 Can you please define international?
As for internationalisation in the software sense, the shop is hardcoded
 in English: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=37797

At the moment, I can't give you a real definition of international.
Because the store has changed hands, we are working on creating a more
cohesive strategy for accomplishing some of the shop's major goals, such as
institutionalizing the giveaways program to ensure community members are
being awarded on a consistent basis for their work. This is just one
example of the many small facets of the store that need greater planning
before we expand its scope internationally. Conducting an international
campaign would certainly be done in conjunction with creating multi-lingual
iterations of the store, which we will move toward in the coming year.

Finally, I'd like to quickly introduce myself as an alternate resource for
questions on anything shop-related. I am a new addition to the WMF team,
working to support the online fundraiser as well as being the primary
 point
of contact regarding the online store. Shoot me an email if I can be of
 any
 assistance!

Welcome! Please register on bugzilla, copy this information on
 https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=53946 and cc yourself to
 the bug above.

Thanks! I've registered an cc'd and will get more involved in the
conversation as our plan surrounding internationalizing the store develops.

[Wikimedia-l] WMF Online Store Promotion

2013-11-08 Thread Caitlin Cogdill
Hello everyone,

As you may already know, the Wikimedia Foundation supports a small but
growing online store meant to give editors a chance to wear their passion
for Wikipedia in shirts, scarves, backpacks, and more. This November, we
will be running a short campaign for logged-in users in the US only,
spreading the word about the store to those who have not had an opportunity
to check it out. This will result in the display of a small banner at the
top of your page from November 11 through November 15, just as a casual
reminder that we’ve got Wikipedia merchandise at 10% off to keep you warm
while you edit!

While the promotion will only be displayed in the US, all international
users are welcome to order through the store and reap the benefits of the
discount. After we work out the kinks in this campaign, we’ll investigate
the possibility of similar international campaigns in the future. The
banner is set to show up to each user only two times. And remember, if you
get tired of seeing the notification, just click the “X” on the banner and
it will disappear.

As always, the proceeds from our online store go toward community events
and our Volunteer Giveaway
Programhttps://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Merchandise_giveaways,
helping us to recognize fabulous editors who have played an instrumental
role in making Wikipedia what it is today.

If you have any questions about the online store or would like to provide
feedback, feel free to email us at
merchand...@wikimedia.orgfeedb...@wikimedia.org,
or fill out this survey http://www.formstack.com/forms/?1546304-Ayh5Vr2cgO.
