Re: [Wikimedia-l] Funding programs for individuals.
Omg, I totally missed this thread when it started originally. As Wikimedia Deutschland has an extensive history in individual grantmaking and is currently running more than a dozen programs, please allow me to add a link to our overview-page in the German Wikipedia: https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:F%C3%B6rderung (German only, sorry, but Google Translate should do it) Sorry for being so utterly late, but I hope this link is still of use? In case you need some more explanations in detail, please feel free to consult me here or offlist. Best regards, Denis Barthel -- Team Communitys (Bereichsleitung) Head of Volunteer Support Dept. I went ahead >> and >> drafted <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Jean-Frédéric/ >> Funding_programs >> > > The relevant Meta page is https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants > It was written mainly with information from the Wikimania 2011 session > pad, so it may be slightly outdated. Can you please merge yours in Nemo - I have no idea why we are moving to ElasticSearch: *you* should be implemented as the search backend for Meta - and MediaWiki.org and Bugzilla while we are at it ;-þ The table is now merged in https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants. Please fix any oversight I may have made in the process, and add any missing information. (It is my understanding that grantmaking programs will be a focus of the next Wikimedia Conference - I look forward more conversation happening on this topic!) [Wikimedia-l] Birgit Müller - Wikimedia Deutschland’s new Community Liaison
Hi everyone, I am delighted to announce that as of last week, Birgit Müller is Wikimedia Deutschland’s Community Liaison for the German community. Birgit will assist the German Wikimedia communities on questions concerning introductions of software tools and administrative changes in the projects. Past conversations, discussions and conflicts have shown that our presence can be helpful for all involved parties and should be taken to a continuous level. As a new member of Wikimedia Deutschland’s Volunteer Support Department, reporting to me, Birgit will take care of these issues continuously from now on. We are glad to have her aboard. Please join me in welcoming her to the Wikimedia world! Best regards, Denis Barthel -- Head of Volunteer Support Dept. Re: [Wikimedia-l] WikiData and WikiSpecies
Disclaimer: I am writing this as a community member of the German Wikipedia, where I have been active for many years in the WikiProject:Biology. As an amateur I had to learn throughout the years, that taxonomy is pretty tricky, much more than it seems at first sight. Though it seems so easy to map taxonomical data in a database due to its seemingly strict hierarchical nature, I'm afraid it is much more tricky to implement as taxonomy is a discipline with a lot of traps to step in. That doesn't mean, that it shouldn't be tried, but when considering to do this: please get advice of professional taxonomists (not only general biologists) before planning things like that from a purely technical point of view. Be aware of heavy differences between the various, but binding codes (Zoology, Bacteriology, Botany s.l. and cultivated plants). Be aware of the necessity of concurring data trees working with the same objects. Be aware of the continous changes of taxonomy and the current tendency of dismissing defined ranks for the benefit of nodes. Such professional advice could be useful to avoid failures due to missing expertise in the very beginning. Just a hint. Best regards, Denis Barthel Am 03.06.2013 12:01, schrieb Federico Leva (Nemo): Nikola Smolenski, 03/06/2013 11:44: What if this interface would exist? I believe it could be made really quickly and easily. It's not about interface only, for instance the search backend is completely broken and useless for Wikidata, AFAICS. From what I understand, the interface for Wikidata data is provided by client sites such as Wikipedia. There are no plans for inclusion of Wikispecies as client site, but if/when Wikispecies' needs are implemented this doesn't imply Wikispecies would be useless, rather that it would have easier access to data and could focus on its scope i.e. presenting such data. Currently it tries to do both and IMHO fails at both. Nemo P.s.: There are also connected problems like sv.wiki becoming a Wikispecies/Wikidata on its own with a million species bot-entries, but it's another story. ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list Wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Unsubscribe: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l -- Projektmanager Team Communitys Fon +49 30 219 158 26 31 Mobil +49 172 23 13 811 E-Mail: denis.bart...@wikimedia.de -- Wikimedia Deutschland e.V. | Obentrautstr. 72 | 10963 Berlin Tel. Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Conference in Karlsruhe, Germany
Thank you for the report, Romaine. Please allow me a small, though important correction: the WikiCon has always been an event organized from within the community and not by the chapter itself. Wikimedia Deutschland assists and supports the event-committee in every way as wanted and needed, changing year by year from pure grantmaking to strong organizational support. Wikimedia Deutschland understands this event, where this year approx. 250 people met and worked collaboratively, as a climax of the German communities' calendar. The amount of ideas, projects, discussions, and real-life-interaction is overwhelming and very inspiring. Thanks to all volunteers making this wonderful event possible now for the fourth time. Best regards, Denis Barthel Am 25.11.2013 23:49, schrieb Romaine Wiki: The past three days (22-24 Nov) there was in the south German city of Karlsruhe near the French border a conference organised by Wikimedia Germany and a whole group of volunteers. The conference, WikiCon, was held for the fourth time as German language conference, with many users from Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, but also users from Poland, Czech Republic, Italy, and the Netherlands. I was there too and was asked to give a presentation and tell about about bots and about Wiki Loves Monuments. The conference was held in the buildings of the complex of the Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT), with there the rooms for presentations and talks, a university cafeteria and a hall. The conference took three days to enable the users to travel here from longer distances to come here. Friday was the day of arrival. In the afternoon almost everyone arrived. Those who were early could join the excursion to the Bundesverfassungsgericht [1], an important court in Germany. At the beginning of the evening everyone was welcomed and a buffet was arranged. After that a Entzücklopädischer Abend (entzücken = delight), in what humor and music where used to have a look at the going ons in Wikipedia. After a long night everyone went to their hotel. On the second day there were seven tracks - seven simultaneous series of presentations - about a wide range of subjects with attention to all kinds of aspects of Wikipedia and the things that accompany it. See for the program in German on https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:WikiCon_2013/Programm At noon a lunch was arranged for the attendees in the cafeteria. At the beginning of the evening followed the ceremony of Wiki Loves Monuments in Germany. Then there was a buffet arranged for the attendees, after which people lingered long and talked until midnight. On the third day, there was a barcamp [2], the visitors had indicated the day before what topics they wanted to talk about and/or give a presentation and who was interested. There was also room for discussion on some issues. Around noon we moved to the main hall for closure. There the motivation awards were handed out: which projects over the past year contributed most to the development of (mainly) the German Wikipedia. Also everyone was thanked who helped to make this conference a success. I personally I liked the most talking to users to exchange our experiences on Wikipedia and learn from each other, what subjects people are working on and what they encounter working on the various projects. There is a huge overlapping with what users encounter on the German Wikipedia compared to other wikis, but we actually know so little about each other. Other ingredients were big Wikipediabeanbags, Wikipedia seating cubes, wikichocolate, wikipuzzles, free internet, nice users on an interesting conference. Also I should mention that the KIT is active with open access as publication model. Re: [Wikimedia-l] Editor retention implies social features
Am 17.04.2012 18:20, schrieb Sarah Stierch: People want some type of validation that goes beyond the mission, whether it's a "prize," an award, etc. Gamification might be a strategy for many things, but I don't think that it is working as a general approach throughout all communities. I doubt that european or asian communities would appreciate a playful approach on gathering and sharing knowledge as much as the en does. I think there is a lot of value in encouraging people to bring their personalities to Wikipedia by way of their user page, etc. In this world we live in today, people want to share a picture of themselves and so forth. Saying "That is what a user page is for," isn't enough, and we've struggled to make an easy to use userpage that encourages new editors to share images of themselves. "encouraging people to bring their personalities to Wikipedia" - gamification might be of help for that. Trouble starts to make the brought-in editors stay when they see, that earning likes, favs and pluses is much more easier elsewhere, as you do not have to contribute lengthy on brazilian 200-m-sprinters, extinct languages of western papua, villages of western-central estonia, artillery battery commanders of the civil war, fossil species of foraminifera or fluid dynamics before. Maybe it might be more useful to support editing instead of collecting people only. I can't imagine that sharing a new picture on my userpage is helpful, while I am trying to figure out, if there is convincing information on the dispersal events of the genus Lilium in Japan and North America or trying to find a reference for the second album of a japanese ultra drone doom metal band. Would love to find help therein. Regards, Denis ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list Wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Unsubscribe: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l
