2023-11-21 Thread Eric Luth
Hi all,

I'm excited to share this blog post
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2023/11/20/3000-new-medical-illustrations-on-wikimedia-commons-this-is-how-you-can-contribute/>
[1]
about the first larger project that the Helpdesk
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Content_Partnerships_Hub/Helpdesk> of the
Content Partnerships Hub initiative has carried out, in close collaboration
with Netha Hussain:

“In receiving help for doing this project, I will be able to acquire the
skill sets required for batch uploading similar images from medical
repositories. I maintain a list of open access medical repositories here
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Netha_Hussain/Medical_Images?wprov=wppw2>,
and the skills I learn from doing the SMART SERVIER project will eventually
be helpful for other content partnership programs, particularly those of
which I have named in the repository.”

In this project, 3,000 medical illustrations from the laboratory Smart
Servier have been uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. The blog post explains how
you can make use of the images.

Netha explains that the value of these illustrations is that they can help
illustrate complex biological processes and concepts in a better way,
especially where actual photographs would be hard/impossible to create
(such as things happening on the molecular level), where actual photographs
would be disturbing or offensive (genital organs or obesity, e.g.), of
where simple representations are preferred rather than complex
diagrams/photos, such as on Simple Wikipedia or Wiktionary.

If you want to help add these images to Wikipedia pages, the illustrations
have been added to galleries, which makes them easier to browse
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:SMART-Servier_Medical_Art/Galleries>.
You can also help improve the metadata of the images, to add more
structured data! All files in the category that have a depict statement can
be accessed at this link: https://w.wiki/7eZ4 And all files in the category
without a depict statement can be found at this link: https://w.wiki/7eY$

When it comes to the specific photo: I also don't know why the editors
chose this caption (I didn't) – I have tried to get them to change it but
no reply yet. The photo is published on Commons under CC BY-SA:

[Wikimedia-l] The launch of the Content Partnerships Helpdesk

2022-09-05 Thread Eric Luth
Hi everyone,

A while back, Wikimedia Sverige announced the upcoming Helpdesk of the
Content Partnerships Hub, a service to support Wikimedians that want to
work with partners to share content on the Wikimedia platforms.

Now, when the Helpdesk is finally up and running, the next thing needed are
your requests for help!

I just published a blog post on Diff
<https://diff.wikimedia.org/2022/09/02/do-you-want-support-with-content-partnerships-the-helpdesk-is-here-to-help/>
[1]
where I try to outline the process. A lot is still under development, but
you can already now read more on the Helpdesk portal on Meta
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Content_Partnerships_Hub/Helpdesk> [2].

The basic idea, however, is that anyone that wants support with a project
sends an email to *helpd...@wikimedia.se *. Describe
what you want to do and what you want to achieve, and in what way it
contributes to filling a gap on the platforms, and the Helpdesk will do
what it can to help. The support can be anything from technical and batch
uploads to policy-making or advocacy. We look forward to getting your
proposals!

We also want to invite Wikimedians to join the work. We plan to establish
working groups to support with anything from communication to advocacy and
actual uploads. If you are a volunteer or an affiliate that wants to
support, please reach out as well! You can email *helpd...@wikimedia.se
 *for this as well.

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Reflections about Visa situation for Wikimedians

2022-08-16 Thread Eric Luth
I agree with the others that you are raising a really important point,
Anass. Thanks for that.

I have tried to support visa applicants to two international Wikimedia
events in Stockholm, the Wikimedia Diversity Conference in 2017 and
Wikimania in 2019. It was frustrating even for me as organizer, and I can't
even imagine how frustrating and disheartening it must be for the visa
applicants.

After these two occasions, I have made a few simple conclusions.

   - If it is of high priority that visa applications are accepted, more
funding for supporting the applications than one might think is needed. It
is time consuming to support visa applications, but it does make a
   difference.
   - One reason why there needs to be plenty of funding for supporting the
applications is that the embassies, at least the Swedish ones, work
independently of each other. We tried to develop one process and timeline,
but it failed because of all the embassies' own procedures and timelines.
It is close to impossible to develop one structure or process, but support
needs to be given to each applicant in their own process. If that is done,
it does however increase the likelihood that the visa is approved.
   - For Wikimania, we were even more actively engaged in the visa
processes as compared to the Diversity Conference – as we seemed to notice
that it made a difference. We reached out to the embassies informing them
about the upcoming conference, we were in close communication with the
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, that organized a reception during Wikimania
for WikiGap organizers, and even successfully appealed a rejection. All
this took a lot of time, and not all applications were successful. But a
higher proportion was successful as compared to the Diversity Conference.
   - We are not sure, but WikiGap *seems* to have made a difference in many
embassies. That is, the Swedish embassy in a given country has after the
WikiGap events a relationship to the Wikimedia movement, and might even
know about the applicants, which in many cases *seems* to have led to
more approvals. I am not sure if that is possible to repeat in more
instances, but for us it shows at least that building relations might help.

I don't think, however, that we will ever reach 100% approvals. I thus also
wholeheartedly agree with the previous message that we need to explore
successful person / remote integration.

I also want to acknowledge the fact that I write this as a previous
organizer. As the situation is of course much harder for all applicants,
for me it is not about complaining, but trying to rase a few points that
can perhaps increase the probability of approvals in more cases.

Best,

[Wikimedia-l] Winners of WikiGap Challenge 2021

2021-06-04 Thread Eric Luth
Hi all,

After calculating and validating the results, the organizers of WikiGap
Challenge 2021 have now published the results and winners! You can read
more here:
https://diff.wikimedia.org/2021/06/04/this-is-the-winner-of-wikigap-challenge-2021/

In short, the user Tuga1143 received the most points in the challenge,
after having created or improved 429 articles in Portuguese! Kushared and
Armineaghayan shared the first place for the newly launched "Best Article"
challenge, focusing on qualitative improvements; Kushared for their article
on Frida Kahlo in Kurdish Sorani, and Armineaghayan for their article on
Vera Kholodnaya in Armenian. You can see these and more results here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge/Results
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge/Results>

In total, almost 100 participants registered, and created or improved 2,940
articles! We got help from the UN Human Rights office to propose a list of
29 women human rights defenders
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge/List> that yielded bonus
points. The WikiGap Challenge resulted in 337 articles about these women,
in 30 different languages!

Thanks to all the participants, for making a substantial impact on
Wikipedia, and congratulations to the winners!

[Wikimedia-l] WikiGap Challenge

2021-03-12 Thread Eric Luth
Hi everyone,

On International Women's Day, we launched this year's edition of the
global WikiGap
Challenge <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge>. Anyone, who
wants to write articles about women on Wikipedia, is welcome to join.

This year, we teamed up with the UN Human Rights Office, which proposed a
list of women active within the field of human rights. These articles
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge/List> yield bonus points
in the challenge.

The challenge runs until 8 April. If you think of someone you think would
be interested in joining, feel free to forward the invitation.

The winner receives some really nice prizes
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge/Prizes>.

Wish you all a great weekend!

2021-02-22 Thread Eric Luth
Hi again,

A few further WikiGap updates!

   - We are launching the global campaign and the WikiGap Challenge with a
virtual event on 8 March. Find out more on the page on Meta
   <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap/2021/Global_kickoff> or in
the Facebook
   event <https://www.facebook.com/events/109257844426064>, and register
   here

<https://www.eventbrite.com/e/wikigap-kicking-off-the-global-campaign-tickets-141801918355?ref=estw>
   .
   - We have now published some guidance on how to organize a successful
WikiGap event virtually. As with all things Wikip/median, it is not
finished – and I would love to have your thoughts and input, either here or
on the talk page. You find the guidance here
   <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap/Virtual_WikiGap>.
   - We will run a WikiGap Challenge
   <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge> this year too, of
course. Like last year, women human rights defenders will be an important
focus. We are also, with input from many previous attendees, re-doing the
points system a bit. It is not fully established yet – so feel free to
reach out with feedback and input also now.
   - Do you want to organize a WikiGap event but don't know how? Reach out
to me and my colleagues and I will do our best to help!

[Wikimedia-l] WikiGap Update

2021-02-12 Thread Eric Luth
Hi all,

We are at the moment working hard for the preparations for this year's
WikiGap Campaign. As with most campaigns and events in the movement, we are
working hard to adapt to a completely digital campaign.

I wanted to give a few updates.

First, we are working hard to develop some guidelines for a successful
virtual WikiGap event. Our hope is that it can easily be modified to work
for any digital editathon. The goal is to have it finalized and distributed
by early next week.

Secondly, we have started a Facebook group for WikiGap organizers,
participants, and supporters. If you are interested in organizing or taking
part in a WikiGap event, you can join the Facebook group. We will give more
regular updates there. Here is the link:
https://www.facebook.com/groups/858908041562951

Thirdly, we summarized the outcome from last year's campaign a few days
back. In spite of Covid-19, which forced a large amount of the events to be
either canceled or entirely digital, 1,500 editors created or improved more
than 20,000 articles, articles that in 2020 had more than 42 million views.
Well done to everyone who took part!

Wish you all a nice weekend!

[Wikimedia-l] WikiGap 2021

2020-12-18 Thread Eric Luth
Hi!

2020 is slowly drawing to a close. When we have now summarized the WikiGap
Campaign in 2020, we see that – despite the ongoing pandemic! – you guys
have gathered almost 1,500 editors, and 250 new ones, to edit 19,000
articles and create almost 2,000 new ones about women! The almost 30,000
edits (!) have been viewed by just short than 45 million times in 2020
alone. Several affiliates have held their first events, and we are happy to
see that more and more people and organizations are interested in joining
the campaign. We are, as always, completely astonished! Well done, all
WikiGap organizers.

WikiGap <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap> is an annual campaign
starting with the International Women’s Day in March, to bridge the gender
gap on Wikipedia. It is co-organized by Wikimedia Sverige, the Swedish
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Swedish embassies across the world, Wikimedia
affiliates, and potentially other partners.

With this email, we also want to announce that we are beginning
preparations for the WikiGap Campaign in 2021. The world looks nothing like
what we are used to, and we will do our best as global coordinators to find
a model that can work for both digital and physical events.

If you want to organize a WikiGap event in 2021, feel free to reach out to
us! We will happily help you with the next steps. If you already have
decided that you want to take part, you can list your event here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap/2021/Events

We also plan to experiment with international partnerships and new concepts
for international coordination next year. Stay tuned!

In the meanwhile, we wish you happy holidays, a Merry Christmas for those
who celebrate, and a happy new year.

Best

[Wikimedia-l] Sharing experiences from Wikimedia Sverige's digital AGM

the circumstances, it was held entirely virtually for the first time. For
this occasion – to make sure that everything worked out well and that all
members and participants felt safe with the tools we used – we developed a
set of material. We hope that this might be of use for other communities as
well. Parts of it has been translated into English, and most of it is
gathered on a new page we created here:
https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Digital_Annual_General_Meeting.

This material covers a range of topics, from an investigation of which
video conference platform to choose, to procedural rules and division of
roles during the meeting. Our experience is that this supporting material
has been helpful in creating a well-hosted meeting.

We are also eager to see what other communities have created that can be
valuable to the community, so please, feel free to share your own material,
as well as your experiences from your virtual and online AGMs.

Best,
*Eric Luth*

[Wikimedia-l] Winner of WikiGap Challenge 2020 announced

2020-04-24 Thread Eric Luth
Dear all,

From 8 March to 8 April, the second edition of the WikiGap Challenge
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge> took place. The WikiGap
Challenge is a challenge aiming to create or improve articles about women
on Wikipedia. It is a part of the WikiGap campaign, organized by Wikimedia
Sverige, the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Swedish embassies and
Wikimedia affiliates across the world. This year, we teamed up with the UN
Human Rights office, who proposed a list of 20 women human rights defenders
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge/List> that had no
Wikipedia articles (or in only a very few languages). These articles gave
bonus points in the challenge.

It took some extra time this year to finalize the results from the WikiGap
Challenge <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge>, but now
we’re done! And I must confess that we are quite happy with the results.

General outcome

   -

72 competitors with actual edits (90 signed up)
   -

   3,224 articles created or improved.
   -

   461 Wikidata objects improved
   -

   Edits made in 38 languages.
   -

Editors have contributed 61,591,425 bytes, or roughly 61,5 megabytes.

Human Rights articles

   -

There are 20 women in the list.
   -

338 articles were created about these women during the challenge.
   -

The articles have in total been created in 32 different languages.
   -

   The article about Bogaletch Gebre
   <https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bogaletch_Gebre> is available in the
highest amount of languages, 24 languages.
   -

Anna Sharyhina has the largest total size among all languages, with
   192,918 bytes (192kb).
   -

The largest individual article is the article about Anna Sharyhina in
   Ukrainian

<https://uk.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A8%D0%B0%D1%80%D0%B8%D0%B3%D1%96%D0%BD%D0%B0_%D0%93%D0%B0%D0%BD%D0%BD%D0%B0_%D0%91%D0%BE%D1%80%D0%B8%D1%81%D1%96%D0%B2%D0%BD%D0%B0>
   .

We can now also announce that the winner of the WikiGap Challenge this year
is Andriy Gritsenko – who also won last year! During the WikiGap Challenge
2020, Andriy wrote or improved 416 articles about women during the month.
You can read more on his motivation and engagement in a piece on our blog:
[link]

Andriy gets to visit the UN Human Rights office in Geneva when the world so
permits, as the first prize. Congrats, Andriy!

His entries, and the rest of the top 10, can be found here:

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge/Results

We also wrote a piece on the Wikimedia Sverige blog about it, which can be
found here:

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Halfway through the WikiGap Challenge

2020-03-30 Thread Eric Luth
Hi all,

I wanted to give a quick update around the WikiGap Challenge.
The first prize of the challenge has been updated due to the Covid-19
pandemic, as it is unlikely that it will be possible to take part in any
events in June.
That doesn't mean that the prize won't be awarded!
We have agreed with the UN Human Rights office of a new wording, that
sounds:

"The winner will receive the opportunity to participate in events in
Geneva, Switzerland, organized by UN Human Rights. The precise time and
occasion of the events will be announced later and depend on the evolving
situation of the global COVID-19 pandemic, as we want to protect the safety
and wellbeing of the winner and others."

This means that the winner will take part in a similar event when the
status of the world so permits.
Good luck to those of you competing for the last 1,5 week!

Best,

2020-03-24 Thread Eric Luth
Hi all,

Now we are halfway through the WikiGap Challenge
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge> [1]! So far, more than
70 participants have signed up, with more than 1,400 edited articles – a
lot of important women who are now better covered on Wikipedia!

There is still more time for people to sign up
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge/Participants> [2]! The
competition runs until 8 April, and the aim is simple: to improve coverage
of women on Wikipedia. UN Human Rights has produced a list of women

human rights, that give bonus points in the competition. But any new or
improved article about women or people who define as women counts.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Save the date: WikiGap Challenge

2020-03-09 Thread Eric Luth
Hi all,

Now, the WikiGap Challenge is live, running until 8 April!
37 participants are already signed up, creating, improving and referencing
articles about women. After one day, about 60 articles have been created in
a dozen languages, and many more improved upon.
Last year, in total 86 editors participated. Can we beat that this year?

Would be great to see many of you join!

[Wikimedia-l] Save the date: WikiGap Challenge

2020-03-05 Thread Eric Luth
Dear all,

A quick save the date:

On *Sunday 8 March*, the International Women's Day, we are launching
the WikiGap
Challenge <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge> [1] for the
second year in a row.

The aim of the challenge, which will run until 8 April, is to create and
improve articles to strengthen Wikipedia's coverage of women and related
topics in as many languages as possible.

This year, we are teaming up with UN Human Rights Office. A set of articles
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge/List> [2] on women
active in human rights will give bonus points, and the winner of the
challenge will get an opportunity to participate for a couple of days in
some events organised by UN Human Rights on the margins of the June session
of the Human Rights Council in Geneva.

The challenge is a part of the *WikiGap campaign
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap>*, [3] co-organized by the Swedish
Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Wikimedia Sverige, Swedish embassies and
Wikimedia affiliates and volunteers across the world.

Sign up <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge/Participants> as
a participant already now! We look forward to seeing you in the competition
:-)

[Wikimedia-l] WikiGap 2020

2020-01-27 Thread Eric Luth
Hi all!

As many of you probably know, WikiGap
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap> is organized annually around
International Women's Day 8 March. It is an initiative aiming to close the
gender gap in Wikipedia, and is organized as a cooperation between
Wikimedia Sverige, the Swedish Ministry for Foreign Affairs, Swedish
embassies and Wikimedia affiliates and volunteers around the world. It was
first organized in March 2018 and now we would like to do it for the third
time! We are planning to organize several Wikipedia edit-a-thons around 8
March 2020. The purpose of the edit-a-thons is to create more articles
about women, as a way of building a more gender-equal Internet and a more
gender-equal world (a manual can be found here
<http://www.swemfa.se/wp-content/uploads/2019/02/manual-2019.pdf>).

At this point, we have started the preparations for WikiGap 2020
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap>! I have reached out individually
to previous organizers, but if there are affiliates or volunteers who
haven't taken part in the initiative before but would like to – you still
have the chance! Feel free to reach out to me for any questions.

If there are previous organizers who I have missed to contact, feel free to
reach out then too! If you have already decided upon a date and started the
preparations, please fill in the Events
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap/2020/Events> list at Meta. In that
way, we know if you are planning an event and can reach out to you with
more information.

WikiGap Challenge and Photo Exhibition

As last year, we will also initiate a WikiGap Challenge, encouraging
article creation on women throughout the Spring. Last year, the winner Andriy
Hrytsenko
<https://si.se/en/wikigap-has-brought-us-27-000-articles-closer-to-a-gender-equal-internet/>
, from Ukrainian Wikipedia, got a Wikimania scholarship as a reward. The
challenge will be online and coordinated on Meta, as last year
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/WikiGap_Challenge>.

For the first time this year, we are aiming to produce a photo exhibition,
in digital and physical form, to highlight several of the great articles
that have been written. Reach out to us if you have interest in hosting it!
Our preliminary idea is to produce it with A4 photos to print and text in
two languages, the original and English, besides.

Best,

[Wikimedia-l] New Wikimania program design announced: call for proposals OPEN

2019-03-01 Thread Eric Luth
Hi all,

The Wikimania organizing team is now happy to announce the *Program Design*
<https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Program_design> of Wikimania
2019!

We believe that this year’s conference theme
<https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Theme> requires a format
that is *future-oriented,
collaborative, active, and focused on practical problem-solving. *The
program will therefore consist of a series of parallel *spaces* (or

idea-sharing and cross-cultural collaboration focusing on different *topic
areas*.

The call for proposals for these *Leaders*, and what they would like to do
with those *Spaces*, is NOW OPEN. We invite you to visit the Program Design
page <https://wikimania.wikimedia.org/wiki/2019:Program_design> on the

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimania 2019 Theme Announced

2019-02-28 Thread Eric Luth
Dear all,

Yesterday, Wikimedia Sweden (Sverige) and the Wikimania organizing team
announced the official theme of Wikimania 2019: "Strengthening each other:
Wikimedia, free knowledge and the Sustainable Development Goals." Michael
Peter Edson <https://twitter.com/mpedson>, the co-founder and Associate
Director of The Museum for the United Nations — UN Live

[Wikimedia-l] COH Challenge

2017-06-29 Thread Eric Luth
Dear Wikimedians,

1-31 July, Wikimedia Sverige and UNESCO co-arranges the second competition
as part of the Connected Open Heritage
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Connected_Open_Heritage> project. The
competition, called the COH Challenge
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Connected_Open_Heritage_Challenge>, will
focus on adding great, new images to articles about cultural heritage
uploaded as part of the project.

As part of the COH project, more than 12,000 images have been uploaded on
Commons
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Connected_Open_Heritage_Challenge/List>.
The goal is thus to make sure that these images are used on Wikipedia. To
ensure a qualitative approach, only 5 images per article (with image
captions) will be awarded points. Twice the points are awarded if the
article with the added image is also improved.

Some of you may recall the previous competition, the UNESCO Challenge,
where the focus was on improving articles! The results were great. 96 users
registered, and more than 8 million bytes of data were created. We hope
that many of you wish to take part in this competition as well. Just as
last time, nice prizes are awarded to the winners.

Best,

This is a wonderful initiative Eric. Can other groups add a special prize
for the articles related with their country or other topics (eg Non
material, natural sites)?

Splendid, James, and thank you! Please note though, that, this time, the
focus is on Wikipedia articles and Wikidata (as indicated on the point
registration page).

Best,
Eric

[Wikimedia-l] UNESCO Challenge

2017-04-18 Thread Eric Luth
Dear Wikimedians,

On 18 April (today), the International Day for Monuments and Sites is
celebrated. On the same day, the first edition of the UNESCO Challenge
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/UNESCO_Challenge> will also take place.
The challenge will last for a full month.

The UNESCO Challenge is a challenge co-arranged by UNESCO, the Swedish
National Heritage Board and Wikimedia Sverige, with the purpose to improve
Wikipedia articles on world heritage sites. UNESCO are going to release a
couple of thousand images (they will be added in this category
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Images_from_UNESCO_2017-04>),
and a lot of Open Access texts about the sites, which may be used in the
challenge.

Write in whatever language you like! You find the page for participation
and points registration here
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/UNESCO_Challenge/Participants>.

Please help us spread the word!
