[Wikimedia-l] Meet the first board of the UG Wikipedia & Education

2018-10-09 Thread João Alexandre Peschanski
Dear all!

The UG Wikipedia & Education elected a week ago its first board [1], and it
is my honor to communicate members and roles of this board to the movement.
The electoral process was both smooth and engaging, and thanks for everyone
who got involved with it. Please join me extending the traditional
honorific "Hooray" to the newly elected board members :)

The aim of the UG Wikipedia & Education is officially "to enhance and scale
local and global educational efforts, advocate for education within the
Wikimedia movement, and elevate the narrative of education outside our
movement" [2]. The group was recognized on 27 June 2018.

The first board meeting, that decided on internal board affairs and roles,
was held yesterday; information on meetings and action calls will be shared
on the education list [3]. Stay tuned!

== Board ==

Shani Evenstein, chair

Susanna Mkrtchyan, vice-chair

Ananth Subray, secretary

Filip Maljković, membership admin

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Results of the Affiliate Selected Board Seats voting

2019-06-12 Thread João Alexandre Peschanski
The ASBS voting was an exciting process, as it was a first and important
step to deepen and broaden participatory decision making in our movement. I
thank the current board members who have been bold and launched this
process. I also thank the election facilitators who have worked restlessly
to make this happen. Thanks to candidates who have contributed to a
productive, engaging exchange of ideas with community members.

The election of Nataliia and Shani is of course wonderful. Congratulations!
From what I can tell, the Brazilian community --which has gone through such
a hard period in recent times-- is wholeheartedly celebrating for you!

Cheers,

João

Dear Franziska!

Welcome to the list! And thanks a lot for your contributions to Wikimedia
and for the documents you have shared. I will read them with vivid interest!

I am not sure if this is considered --and sorry if it is!-- but it'd be
wonderful to have in-depth discussions on the vision and strategy papers
during WikidataCon.

Cheers!

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Announcing a new Wikimedia project: Abstract Wikipedia

2020-07-02 Thread João Alexandre Peschanski
Denny, this is very exciting! Congratulations to this wonderful opportunity.

We should definitely organize a Wikidata Lab on the new project and how we
can engage with it. (We might actually have to change the name of the labs,
damn!) Whenever you think is the right time for this event and if you
indeed think it is worth doing it, please let me know and we'll make it
work!

Again, this is great news! Count us in!

Please, find here the Activities Plan for 2021 by the UG Wiki Movimento

These documents were discussed and approved during WMB's General Assembly,

the topic could spark some interest in the Brazilian community.

[Wikimedia-l] Update from Wiki Movimento Brasil

2021-11-08 Thread João Alexandre Peschanski
Dear friends!

I am writing on behalf of the UG Wiki Movimento Brasil to share updates
about our board.

Our group members convened at our General Assembly, on November 1st, and
unanimously appointed the following members as our new board:

* Valério Melo, User:Ixocactus, president

* Chico Venancio, User:Chicocvenancio, vice-president

* Lucas Teles, User:Teles, finance director

They will serve for a four-year term, according to our bylaws. All new
board members come from the Northeast Region, one of the most impoverished
areas in Brazil. Regional power decentralization is a major objective in
Wiki Movimento Brasil's Diversity Plan (https://w.wiki/4Kio).

In the occasion of our General Assembly, we also appointed:

* User:Albertoleoncio and User:Vini_175 to the Fiscal Council, and

* User:DarwIn, User:Victor Lopes, User:Friduxa, User:Tetizeraz and
User:TiagoLubiana to the Good Governance Committee.

I take this opportunity to thank Vinicius Siqueira and Célio Costa Filho
with whom I have served on the board from 2017 to 2021. We were honored to
be part of the consolidation of Wiki Movimento Brasil as a thriving
Wikimedia affiliate.

Best of luck to the new board. Thank you for all you do for this Movement.

Abraços,

João Alexandre Peschanski

[Wikimedia-l] Re: Building Partnerships and Identifying and Addressing Harassment Online self-guided courses now available on WikiLearn platform

2022-05-17 Thread João Alexandre Peschanski
Hi Asaf.

I hope you and yours are doing well!

Let me respectfully disagree with what you just said about Wikiversity.
Most of the features you have mentioned that led you to choose the
development of WikiLearn are actually addressed on the project, for
instance in the cMOOC templates. In this example on Wikiversity in
Portuguese
,
there is a learning management system set up (tabs at the top
),
that has even been described in a peer-reviewed journal of technology and
education (in Portuguese
).
Certificates are not provided through Wikiversity, indeed, but this could
be easily implemented (in the framework we have developed certification
happens on this toolforge platform ). Of
course, development is needed in our projects, and this remains true also
for Wikiversity, and I am sorry this project of yours was finally not an
opportunity for investing in this development and reach a better outcome,
that would actually respond to the call of Skill and Leadership
recommendation with more attention to collaborative governance and
community consultation.

Best,

João

[Wikimedia-l] Wiki Movimento Brasil's Strategic Manifesto, 2023-2025

2022-11-25 Thread João Alexandre Peschanski
Dear friends!

The Wikimedia affiliate Wiki Movimento Brasil is happy to share with the
Movement our Strategic Manifesto for 2023-2025. There is a visual version
in Portuguese [1], English [2] and Spanish [3], as well as an on-wiki
version [4], available in these languages, French and open to further
translations.

This document is the result of a one-year-long collaborative process,
started in November 2021, to redefine our affiliate's priorities and goals.
This process –which reflects how our community and organization have
appropriated the 2030 Movement Strategy– has rested upon a mix of research
and community-consultation methods, and the actual writing has had the
direct involvement of 65 people. Key moments were: a community-wide
research we have led on strategy and governance [5] and the organization of
the first Brazilian Wikimedia Conference, in which we held strategy
discussion sessions with Wikimedians and partners [6].

We have sought to carefully document our coordination, research, production
and writing process, so that our case might eventually serve as a parameter
for other initiatives. The methodology [7] and the lexicon [8] of our
Strategic Manifesto are available for consultation.

We thank everyone who has participated and supported us in this work. We
remain attentive to anyone who would like to share feedback or has
questions about Wiki Movimento Brasil's strategy.

Cheers,

João

[Wikimedia-l] Podcast on Wikimedia Strategy in Brazil

2024-02-02 Thread João Alexandre Peschanski
Hello all! I hope you are doing well!

I'm reaching out to inform you about the *podcast* "Sopa Wiki" (Wiki Soup),
which was produced by the Brazilian affiliate *Wiki Movimento Brasil* (WMB)
last year.

The podcast comprises five episodes, each addressing one of the five *strategic
priorities *outlined in the strategic plan
<https://br.wikimedia.org/wiki/Estrat%C3%A9gia_Wiki_Movimento_Brasil_2023-2025/en>of
Wikimedia in Brazil [1]. These priorities revolve around technology,
community practices, partnerships, knowledge equity, and Wikimedia
governance. The episodes also introduce local initiatives that contribute
to strengthening the open knowledge ecosystem within our context.

The podcast episodes are in Portuguese and have been uploaded to Commons
<https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Sopa_Wiki> exclusively in that
language [2]. However, for those interested in the content but not fluent
in Portuguese, we have added *English subtitles* on YouTube
<https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLEmJ1V6HikFS_ULB39w2Cd0y4d4_-Xyij>
[3].

I hope some of you find this material intriguing, and I'm open to
discussing it further should you have any questions or suggestions.

Best regards from São Paulo, Brasil,

João
