[Wikimedia-l] New co-ED at Wikimedia Deutschland

2022-04-28 Thread Lukas Mezger
Dear Wikimedia friends,

Our path towards an open digital society can only be achieved through open
software solutions. This is why the Wikimedia Deutschland Supervisory Board
adopted a governance reform at our meeting on 9 April and asked Franziska
Heine <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Franziska_Heine_(WMDE)>, our
current head of software development, and Christian Humborg
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/User:Christian_Humborg_(WMDE)>, our
current executive director, to jointly take on the leadership of Wikimedia
Deutschland starting 1 August. Franziska will be the first female ED in the
history of Wikimedia Deutschland and Wikimedia Deutschland might be the
first Wikimedia chapter with a dual leadership.

We believe that our decision to introduce a dual leadership is very much in
line with the sentiment of the Wikimedia communities that accessible and
attractive software is and will always be essential for all current and
future Wikimedia projects. Having two co-EDs lends equal weight to
requirements of the community and the resulting software solutions.

Together with the rest of the Supervisory Board, I am very much looking
forward to continuing to work with Franziska and Christian as our new dual
leadership. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Franziska and
Christian for their work on our new governance structure and especially
Christian for convincing us of this path forward.
Kind regards,

Lukas

[Wikimedia-l] Introducing the Wikimedia Wikimedia Affiliates Environmental Sustainability Covenant

2021-12-18 Thread Lukas Mezger
Dear Wikimedia friends,

I am writing to introduce the Wikimedia Affiliates Environmental
Sustainability Covenant, a cross-affiliate initiative aimed at reducing the
environmental impact of the Wikimedia Movement.[1]

This initiative was born out of discussions about how to take action
against the climate crisis between Wikimédia France and Wikimedia
Deutschland, and is based on Movement Strategy Recommendation #1.8 (*"[W]e
will also align our practices to support the environmental sustainability
of our planet.”*).[2]

You can read the full text of the agreement on Meta.[1] In short, signatory
Wikimedia affiliates commit to:
– reducing their carbon footprint
– improving sustainability topics on the Wikimedia projects
– supporting affiliates from regions most affected by the climate crisis
– sharing stories and encouraging others

Eight Wikimedia affiliates have already signed the agreement,[3] others are
currently discussing it internally, and we are looking for more Wikimedia
affiliates to join as well.

Over the past weeks, we (Bodhisattwa Mandal, Naphsica Papanicolaou, Nanour
Garabedian, and I), have presented the initiative at a number of virtual
Wikimedia gatherings and you can watch video recordings of our talks in
English, French, German, and Arabic.[4] You can also find a public
announcement on the Wikimédia France blog.[5]

Again, we are looking forward to hearing from more affiliates interested in
joining this effort, and we are ready to answer any questions that you may
have.
Kind regards, and happy holidays to everyone celebrating,

Lukas (User:Gnom)

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Deutschland’s new Executive Director: Christian Humborg

2021-05-10 Thread Lukas Mezger
Dear fellow Wikimedians,

In January, Abraham Taherivand informed you that he had decided not to
renew his contract with Wikimedia Deutschland. Today, I am excited to
announce that our search for a new Executive Director has been successful:
Christian Humborg will take over office at Wikimedia Deutschland from 1
June.

One of the most important tasks of the Wikimedia Deutschland Executive
Board is the appointment of the Executive Director. My colleagues and I are
very pleased to have found such a fantastic candidate for the vacant
position. Christian impressed us with his bold ideas and visions, his
leadership experience at the head of influential civil society
organisations and his passion for the liberation of knowledge. He clearly
prevailed among the 59 applicants. The search was managed by our
Supervisory Board and Abraham with the support of an external executive
search firm.

Christian knows the Wikimedia Movement and our commitment to free knowledge
well – because he has helped shape both since 2016 as deputy executive
director and head of finance at Wikimedia Deutschland. Before that, he was
the executive director of the anti-corruption organisation Transparency
International Germany, helped establish the non-profit investigative
journalism centre Correctiv and was awarded the Grimme Online Award as a
member of the journalism collective carta.info. He is the right fit for the
future of Wikimedia Deutschland.

At this point, on behalf of our entire Board, I would like to express my
heartfelt thanks to Abraham, who has achieved so much as Executive Director
over the last four years. He has set important strategic impulses that will
be decisive for the future success of Wikimedia in the world. Abraham
joined Wikimedia Deutschland in 2012 and has since strengthened the
organisation in every respect and positioned it very well for this
handover. Thank you for your great commitment!

It is to Abraham’s credit that he discussed his decision with the Board at
an early stage and thus made a well thought-out search process possible.
Together, we are now working on a good transition.

We are looking forward to continuing the success of the last four years
together with Christian, to tackling new projects, to implementing the 2030
strategy – and to liberating a few more pieces of knowledge together every
day.
Kind regards,

Lukas

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Deutschland: general assembly and new Supervisory Board

2020-06-22 Thread Lukas Mezger
Dear fellow Wikimedians,

On Sunday, Wikimedia Deutschland held its 25th and first-ever virtual
general assembly with over 250 members attending.

Our members elected a new Supervisory Board, which consists of 7 elected
members:

* Lukas Mezger (chair, re-elected)

* Daniel Reisener (treasurer, re-elected)

* Sabria David (re-elected)

* Kilian Kluge (re-elected)

* Christina Dinar

* Valerie Mocker

* Alice Wiegand

Christina Dinar and Valerie Mocker are new to the board, so please join me
in welcoming them as well as in welcoming back Alice Wiegand. We are
particularly pleased that our measures to increase gender diversity have
been successful and that our elected board now consists of four women and
three men.

I would like to wholeheartedly thank our departing elected board members
Harald Krichel, Peter Dewald, and Marcus Cyron, and our departing appointed
members Helene Hahn and Mirjam Stegherr for the great work and their
commitment to Wikimedia Deutschland over the past years.

Sabine Zepp and Lenia Zinßer were elected as auditors. I would like to
express my gratitude to our departing auditors Daniel Baur, who has been
serving the association over so many years, and Lena Stammler.

The general assembly also changed our bylaws to allow for virtual board
meetings and remote board votes. Additionally, our members added a new rule
concerning appointed officers to ensure that at least one third of the
board is of non-male or non-female gender. The general assembly also
approved changes to our strategy and formally approved of the board’s and
the executive director’s actions for 2019.

The new board will reconvene shortly to discuss Movement Strategy matters,
among others, and I am very much looking forward to working together with
the new team.

Kind regards,

Lukas

Dear Nadine,

Thank you for sharing these news – congratulations to all new members of

I'd be interested learn more about the idea of 'community-elected board

[Wikimedia-l] Helene Hahn and Mirjam Stegherr appointed to the WMDE board

2019-03-04 Thread Lukas Mezger
Dear fellow Wikimedians,

I am happy to share with you that the Wikimedia Deutschland board has
appointed Helene Hahn and Mirjam Stegherr as additional members to the
board.

*Helene *is a free knowledge enthusiast and a co-founder of Coding Da
Vinci, the first German open cultural data hackathon(1). For the past five
years, she has worked as a project manager for community and technology
projects in the fields of open government, data literacy and open culture
at the Open Knowledge Foundation Germany. *Mirjam *is a highly experienced
expert in media and communications. Having worked as a freelance
journalist, consultant, deputy editor-in-chief, press officer, and head of
communications for 20 years, she has extensive experience at all levels of
strategic communications.

Both will be full members of the board until the next board elections at
the general assembly in June 2020 and we are very much looking forward to
working with Helene and Mirjam.

The Wikimedia Deutschland board(2) of consists of up to 9 members. Seven
members are elected by the general assembly for a two-year term. After the
election, the seven board members can appoint up to two additional members
to the board. As the general assembly on 1 December 2018 resulted in the
election of six men and one woman, we decided to consider only applications
from non-male candidates for the appointed seats. Subsequently, we
published a profile with the skills and experiences which we considered to
be most important for our board. We are happy that this approach was very
successful: We received more than 80 recommendations and 16 applications of
highly qualified candidates. Through this process, we have made some
valuable experiences and contacts on which we want to build to further
increase the diversity of candidates in upcoming board elections.

Please join me in welcoming Helene und Mirjam to the Wikiverse!
Kind regards,

Lukas

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Deutschland general assembly: new board elected

2018-12-03 Thread Lukas Mezger
Dear fellow Wikimedians,

At our general assembly in Berlin this weekend, the members of Wikimedia
Deutschland elected a new supervisory board.

The new board consists of seven members:
* Lukas Mezger (re-elected, new chair)
* Daniel Reisener (treasurer)
* Sabria David (re-elected)
* Kilian Kluge
* Peter Dewald (had previously been co-opted to the board)
* Marcus Cyron
* Harald Krichel (re-elected)

The board convened for its first meeting on Sunday and named Sabria David
and Harald Krichel as deputy chairs. Daniel Reisener, Kilian Kluge
(User:Cirdan), and Marcus Cyron are new to the board, so please join me in
welcoming them.

I would like to wholeheartedly thank our former board members Kurt Jansson,
Sebastian Moleski, Johanna Niesyto, and Gabriele Theren for the great work
and their commitment to Wikimedia Deutschland in the past years. I
especially want to extend my thanks to Tim Moritz Hector, who has chaired
the board for the past five years.

At the general assembly, we also decided to have only one instead of two
formal assemblies per year, and amended our rules concerning membership
fees. Additionally, the members approved the annual plan for 2019 as well
as our first multi-year strategy, and we had an open debate on how
Wikimedia Deutschland should interact with democratically-elected parties
that do not align with our strategic goals. Lena Stammler (re-elected),
Daniel Baur (re-elected), and Peter Neitzel were elected as auditors.

The board will re-convene in January to set goals for our 18-month term
(shortened because of the bylaws change) and I am very much looking forward
to working together with the new team.
Kind regards,

Lukas

Re: [Wikimedia-l] RFC on wikimedia-l posting limits

2017-08-23 Thread Lukas Mezger
Hi,

I would like to join Lodewijk both in thanking the list administrators for
opening and framing this discussion, and in thinking out lout that maybe "
constructiveness" should somehow be made a rule for posting on this list.
Kind regards,

Lukas

[Wikimedia-l] General Counsel: Welcome Eileen Hershenov

2017-04-27 Thread Lukas Mezger
Dear Michelle,

As many many other Wikimedians, I am truly grateful for the, in the very
sense of the word, service you have done to the Wikimedia movement over the
past years both as a legal professional and as a community member. I am
saddened to see you go. Together with the rest of the legal team, you
admirably worked day and night to keep Wikimedians and the Wikimedia
projects safe, and were extremely successful in doing so.

Most of all, there has always been a great feeling of mutual trust and deep
understanding of community values that I know you hold highly. We will miss
you and I hope that you will continue to be a part of this movement. Let me
thank you again for these last nine years. All the best for your future
endeavors, Michelle!

Dear Eileen,

Welcome to the Wikimedia movement! You are joining an amazing team that is
part of an energetic organization at an exciting point in its short
history. Wikimedians all over the world are looking forward to working with
you and I am sure you will soon experience the first examples of the
amazing feats this community is capable of.

"Be bold!" – One of the core rules of Wikipedia is not a phrase you would
normally use to welcome a new general counsel, but I know it is just right
for the general counsel of the Wikimedia Foundation. I am sure that you
will soon learn more about what this phrase means to us.
