[Wikimedia-l] FY2021 Fundraising Report

2021-10-05 Thread Patricia Pena
Hi all,

I’m happy to announce the publishing of our annual fundraising report that
summarises fundraising activities for the financial year covering July 1,
2020 - June 30, 2021.

Fiscal year 2021 was an extremely pivotal time for the Wikimedia
Foundation’s commitment to providing reliable and neutral information to
the world. The COVID-19 pandemic shaped many of our experiences during this
time, and as the world moved online, we experienced a significant increase
in Wikipedia’s traffic as well as donor support. The 2020-2021 Fundraising
Report
provides insight into our revenue model and the strategy that goes into
creating an impactful fundraising campaign to ensure the Wikimedia movement
has the resources it needs to thrive.

We would like to send an immense amount of gratitude to everyone who
supports our mission. We wouldn't be able to deliver a successful
fundraiser without the support from our volunteer community, affiliates,
and generous donors and readers around the world. Special thank you to
everyone who contributed and collaborated on this report: the fundraising
teams, Legal, Communications, Finance, Product Analytics and more!

We welcome your feedback and questions on the talk page
. [1]
Thank you,
Pats

[Wikimedia-l] FY1920 Fundraising Report

2020-10-06 Thread Patricia Pena
Hi everyone,

We have just completed and published our annual report that summarises
fundraising activities for the financial year covering July 1, 2019 - June
30, 2020. Wikipedia is supported by people — people around the world who
read knowledge on the site, editors who contribute their time to add and
improve articles with up-to-date information, and donors who chip in to
keep Wikipedia thriving. We are proud to present our 2019-2020 Fundraising
Report and
share insights into how the Wikimedia Foundation earns revenue to sustain
the Wikimedia projects. Thank you to everyone who supports our mission to
ensure that everyone, everywhere, can share in and access free knowledge.

Long term financial sustainability is at the core of our department’s
activities, an importance that holds further weight given the ongoing
challenges faced globally. The report highlights the importance of growing
support to the endowment and notes the ongoing focus on our monthly giving
donor program.

A huge thanks to all those across the Wikimedia Foundation, affiliates, and
volunteers, who have contributed to the success of this year's fundraiser.
Without that support, we wouldn’t be able to deliver the resources needed
for the movement to fulfill and achieve its mission. I'd also like to thank
everyone who contributed and collaborated on this report: Online
Fundraising, Major Gifts & Endowment, Fundraising Operations, Donor
Services, Fundraising Tech, Legal, Communications, Finance, Product
Analytics and more! Special thanks to Runjini Murthy for project managing
this entire effort.

We welcome your feedback and questions on the talk page.

Thank you,

Pats

Re: [Wikimedia-l] [Wmfall] Wikimedia Foundation executive transition update

2016-03-10 Thread Patricia Pena
Amazing news indeed. Thank you Katherine for everything you have already
accomplished at the Foundation and for taking up this challenge. And thank
you to the entire C-level and Board for supporting this decision- this is
exactly what we needed right now! I have full trust that Katherine and the
C-team will lead the changes that are much needed.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Why is bank transfer no longer possible?

2015-01-06 Thread Patricia Pena
Hi Lodewijk and all,

Thank you for your feedback regarding the IBAN information. As an update,
the Finance team worked with our bank to improve the security and fraud
protection of our bank accounts so that we can now disclose the bank
account information on our donation pages.

We have updated the USD and EUR account information, and will add the
remaining currencies as we get the green-light from our bank.

Thanks and Happy New Year!

the time, this sounded somewhat reasonable. However, since then,
  there
have
been some disturbing developments - at least for Dutch donors.

No longer it is possible to pay electronically (iDEAL, one of the
  most
common methods is no longer supported - 'electronic banking'
 simply
refers
you back to the credit card page) or even via regular bank
 transfer
(using
an IBAN) in the Netherlands. The donation page

 only
allows credit card and paypal, and the 'other ways to give' simply
   sends
you to the helpdesk if you want to make a bank transfer payment.

What is the reasoning behind this? Have bank transfers become a
  legal
swamp? Are there statistics suggesting that this method was no
  longer
required by donors? Did the European bank account somehow get
temporarily
 suspended?

If it has become so hard to donate, maybe it makes more sense to
  send
the
donors to the local chapter pages where they can actually donate
 in
   the
local suitable methods (in this case, Wikimedia Netherlands offers
   both
 iDEAL and IBAN
 http://www.wikimedia.nl/pagina/doneren-aan-wikimedia-nederland
 ).

One of the Dutch OTRS team members asked for elaboration, but
 didn't
quite
get a satisfying answer. I hope this is a temporary situation, and
   that
this threshold will be removed again. It would be sad if we go

 transfer...

2014-12-23 Thread Patricia Pena
Hi Lodewijk,

Thank you for bringing up these issues. We are looking into it and should
have some answers soon!

As for the address as a required field, would you be able to provide us
with screenshots? I couldn't reproduce it. I can see the name and *email *
fields, and these are pieces of information we request from all donors
(regardless of the donation option) so that we can send an automated *Thank
You* email.

Thanks!

 Hi Pats,

The English form seems to work fine. However, if I am clicking iDEAL in
Dutch, it puts the address/name as a required field - while this should not
be necessary in iDEAL. Seems like an easy bug to fix.

But also when I enter a name etc, it simply returns to the same page,
unlike in ENglish, where it takes me to the bank. Maybe reset the
 translations?

Also, in English the Friesland Bank option seems to be broken. Not sure if
that is a bug on your side or at iDEAL.

Just some bugs I was able to spot without too much effort - hope you can
pass it on to the right people.

 Thanks,

 Lodewijk

The local chapter processes payments in Switzerland and manages fundraising
banners and payment systems implementation. WMF is not running fundraising

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Why is bank transfer no longer possible?

2014-11-17 Thread Patricia Pena
Hi Lodewijk,

Currently IDEAL is temporarily down on our pages (it went into maintenance
mode after our annual campaign), but should be back up soon :) We know
the importance of this method for Dutch donors and have supported this
option since we started fundraising in the NL. We also support offline bank
transfer (IBAN) and donors can get the account number with our Donor
Services team.

We had an extremely successful Fundraising campaign this year, and there
will be some great mobile optimization coming up in the next few months,
which will allow mobile donors to complete their donations in a much faster
and easier way.

Thanks!
Pats

A while back now, the chapters were no longer allowed to fundraise, because
the Wikimedia Foundation argued they would be better able to do this. At
the time, this sounded somewhat reasonable. However, since then, there have
been some disturbing developments - at least for Dutch donors.

No longer it is possible to pay electronically (iDEAL, one of the most
common methods is no longer supported - 'electronic banking' simply refers
you back to the credit card page) or even via regular bank transfer (using
an IBAN) in the Netherlands. The donation page

 https://donate.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:FundraiserLandingPagecountry=NLuselang=enutm_medium=spontaneousutm_source=fr-redirutm_campaign=spontaneous

 only
allows credit card and paypal, and the 'other ways to give' simply sends
you to the helpdesk if you want to make a bank transfer payment.

What is the reasoning behind this? Have bank transfers become a legal
swamp? Are there statistics suggesting that this method was no longer
required by donors? Did the European bank account somehow get temporarily
 suspended?

If it has become so hard to donate, maybe it makes more sense to send the
donors to the local chapter pages where they can actually donate in the
local suitable methods (in this case, Wikimedia Netherlands offers both
 iDEAL and IBAN
 http://www.wikimedia.nl/pagina/doneren-aan-wikimedia-nederland).

One of the Dutch OTRS team members asked for elaboration, but didn't quite
get a satisfying answer. I hope this is a temporary situation, and that
this threshold will be removed again. It would be sad if we go through all
kind of trouble to enable long tail methods like bitcoin, but skip bank
 transfer...

 Best,

 Lodewijk

  Dear all,

As you know, we recently re-named the Global Development department at
 the
Wikimedia Foundation, as the Grantmaking and Programs department. The
Grantmaking team is committed to supporting our community and meeting our
shared goals at the different levels of contribution - whether
 individuals,
groups or organisations - and we will be working with you over the next
few months to deepen our strategies for doing so, and for evaluating our
  impact.

In the meantime, however, I am delighted to announce some changes to the
Grantmaking team that reflect this commitment. Siko Bouterse [1] needs no
introduction to most of you, having worked at WMF since 2011, most
 recently
coordinating the Fellowships program. Siko is coming on to the
 Grantmaking
team as Head of Individual Engagement Grants, a program that will support
individual or small team projects for online impact. This is to be
 launched
later today... watch out for Siko's announcement and details of the
program, coming soon to a wiki near you. Siko will also shortly be taking
on the responsibility for the Participation Support Program (which WMF
 and
WMDE fund together), and supporting the documentation and analysis of our
project-based grants. We are really pleased to have Siko's experience and
  insights on our team.

Katy Love is new to the team, the organisation and the movement, but I
 have
no doubt that her experience and insights, as well, will help us be more
effective. Katy has just joined us as the Senior Program Officer for the
Funds Dissemination Committee (FDC) [2] with a passion for strategic and
impactful grantmaking, participatory collaborative work, and transparent
decision-making. Her background spans philanthropic activities and NGO
programs, systems, and operations. She spent the last four years at CARE
International with the Emergency Capacity Building Project, a
 collaboration
between six of the largest NGOs, aimed at improving humanitarian
 response.

Please join me in welcoming them to our team!

  Warmly,
  Anasuya
