[Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] [PRESS RELEASE] Wikipedia volunteers and free knowledge leaders gather in Cape Town for the first annual “Wikimania” conference in sub-saharan Africa

2018-07-21 Thread Samantha Lien
 will hear feedback from
volunteers about the program in a session on Sunday at Wikimania and
further explore future implementation of these types of programs with other
volunteer communities.

The annual Wikimania gathering will also provide an opportunity for
volunteers to discuss Wikimedia’s future as part of Wikimedia 2030, a
global consultation to define the future of the Wikimedia movement.
Challenges with software localisation, the structure of data, and even
newforms of knowledge that Wikimedia has defined as “verifiable”
(text-based, rather than oral, for example) are some of the issues the
movement is grappling with as it moves actively towards incorporating more
diverse forms of knowledge within Wikipedia and the Wikimedia projects.

Wikimania also offers conference-goers time to experience the unique
culture of Cape Town and join in the celebrations of Nelson Mandela’s 100th
birthday. The conference’s theme, “Bridging knowledge gaps—the ubuntu way
forward,” captures this spirit and finds its roots in the philosophy and
way of life ubuntu.

“Ubuntu is summarised as the philosophy of ‘I am because you are,’ or
alternatively ‘the belief in a universal bond of sharing that connects all
humanity,'” explained Wikimedia South Africa President, Douglas Scott.
“Volunteer community-driven projects like Wikipedia and what we are hoping
to achieve at Wikimania in Cape Town capture this ethos well. Wikimedia
South Africa is honored to have this opportunity to share this spirit with
our friends and colleagues around the world.”

The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organization that supports
Wikipedia, the Wikimedia free knowledge projects, and its mission of free
knowledge for every single person.

interest in participating in the free knowledge movement. Wikimedia ZA is
the local host of Wikimania 2018.

About Wikimania
Wikimania is the annual conference centered on the Wikimedia projects
(Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia free knowledge websites) and the
Wikimedia community of volunteers who contribute to them. It features

aspects which relate to these topics. Wikimania 2018 marks the 14th year of
the conference.

About Wikipedia
Wikipedia is the world’s free knowledge resource. It is a collaborative
creation that has been added to and edited by millions of people from
around the globe since it was created in 2001: anyone can edit it, at any
time. Wikipedia is offered in nearly 300 languages containing a total of
more than 46 million articles, and viewed more than 15 billion times every
month. It is the largest, collaborative collection of free knowledge in
human history, and today its content is contributed and edited by a

*Wikimedia Foundation appoints Toby Negrin as Chief Product Officer*

*Toby Negrin has been with the Wikimedia Foundation since 2013 and brings
nearly two decades of experience in research, design, analytics, and
product development*

(San Francisco, California) 8 November 2017 — The Wikimedia Foundation is
excited to announce the appointment of Toby Negrin as Chief Product
Officer. Toby has been leading the Foundation's product development in an
interim capacity since April. He brings nearly 20 years of experience of
integrating data, research, and design to produce effective and popular
products.

The Wikimedia Foundation is the nonprofit organization that supports
Wikipedia and the other Wikimedia projects. Together, Wikipedia and the
Wikimedia projects are visited by more than a billion unique devices every
month. The Wikimedia Foundation is driven by its mission to build a world
in which every single person can freely share in the sum of all human
knowledge.

As Chief Product Officer, Toby will lead one of the organization's largest
departments in collaborating with the Wikimedia communities on the
development of the software products which operate Wikipedia and the other
Wikimedia projects. He will be responsible for cultivating a culture of
excellence, engagement, and sustainability within the product engineering
teams. Toby will also work with others in the organization's leadership on
responding to the product needs and requests of the Wikimedia communities.

"Toby has demonstrated a style of leadership focused on outcomes,
collaboration with the Wikimedia community, and respect for Wikimedia
values," said Katherine Maher, Executive Director of the Wikimedia
Foundation. "He has a deep interest in partnership with our communities, an
instinct for assembling and cultivating teams, and a record of supporting
staff as they develop and explore new skills and roles. I am thrilled to
have him leading the Wikimedia Foundation's product development efforts."

Since joining the Wikimedia Foundation in 2013, Toby has led an expansion
of our analytics efforts, built a new team focused on people who utilize
the content developed by Wikimedia's volunteers, and championed the
development of intuitive mobile interfaces and mobile applications. Toby
played a critical role in the creation of the organization's Community Tech
team, which develops features and tools based on feedback from active
members of the communities. He was also a part of the creation of the New
Readers program, a cross-departmental effort to help new people discover
and benefit from Wikimedia's projects.

Prior to joining the Wikimedia Foundation, Toby led analytics efforts at
DeNA, a mobile social games company. At DeNA, he partnered with colleagues
in Japan and China to build global dashboards used to track gaming
performance around the world. He also held roles at Yahoo! related to cloud
platforms, anti-abuse efforts, and content moderation. Toby grew up in Los
Angeles and the UK before landing in the San Francisco Bay Area, and worked
in software development at startups in Sweden and The Netherlands.

"The Wikimedia movement is an amazing collaboration among editors,
developers, chapters and other organizations around the globe," Toby said.
"I am excited and honored to be part of the movement and look forward to
partnering with our communities to build the tools and experiences for the
next 15 years."

Toby graduated from the NIMBAS Graduate School of Management and University
of California - Santa Cruz. In his free time, he enjoys spending time
winemaking and grape growing, running and hiking Bay Area trails, playing
tennis, and supporting the Golden Gate Philharmonic youth orchestra.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Fwd: Invitation to WMF November 2016 Metrics & Activities Meeting: Thursday, November 17, 19:00 UTC

2016-11-16 Thread Samantha Lien
Hi Pine,

Metrics will still be included in these meetings, though they will be
structured a little differently moving forward.

We’re experimenting with including metrics throughout the presentation
rather than in a defined section. This may also mean using different
metrics based on the work being described. The goal is to to take a more
holistic approach to measuring our work and focus on communicating impact.

We see this as a work in progress and look forward to continuing to
evaluate what’s working for metrics meetings, what’s not, and how we can
improve. I hope this helps clarify.

Thanks,
Sam

Subject: Invitation to WMF November 2016 Metrics & Activities Meeting:
Thursday, November 17, 19:00 UTC
To: wikimediaannounc...@lists.wikimedia.org

Hello everyone,

The next Wikimedia Foundation metrics and activities meeting will take
place on Thursday, November 17, 2016 at 7:00 PM UTC (11 AM PST). The IRC
channel is #wikimedia-office on irc.freenode.net, and the meeting will be
broadcast as a live YouTube stream.

Update/change to meeting format: The Wikimedia Foundation is exploring a
revised format for the November meeting. Our intent is to share work from
the Foundation and movement, but also to connect our work more broadly
within the movement’s biggest opportunities and challenges.

To do this, we are piloting the November meeting around a theme that has
been at the forefront of much of our work recently: “Building an inclusive
movement.”

In November, speakers will highlight projects, initiatives, and work that
actively foster inclusivity within our movement -- to create a space for
everyone to contribute and share in knowledge on the Wikimedia sites.

Here is the agenda for the November meeting:

* Welcomes, theme introduction - “Building an inclusive movement”

* Executive Director update

* Community update

* June 2016 Inspire Campaign - Chris Schilling

* Guest speaker - Wikipedia Asian Month - Addis Wang

* Questions and discussion

* Wikilove

As you may have seen, we are inviting a guest speaker to participate at the
November meeting. Addis Wang, an active member of the Wikimedia User Group
China, will be sharing some of his work with Wikipedia Asian Month and his
efforts to create an inclusive space and invite people to participate in
the edit-a-thon.

In future meetings, we would like to have one guest speaker from a
Wikimedia community or someone from outside the movement present on their
work that ties in with that month’s theme. (More information to come on
this process moving forward, and who to reach out to if you would like to
present in future meetings).

If you have any questions about the new format, please feel free to reach
out to me, Sam Lien, at the Communications department sl...@wikimedia.org.

Please review

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Foundation_metrics_and_activities_
meetings

for further information about the meeting and how to participate.

We will post the video recording publicly after the meeting.

Thank you,
Sam

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Sweden loses copyright suit

2016-04-05 Thread Samantha Lien
Hi Andreas,

This blog post was corrected earlier this morning PST:

https://blog.wikimedia.org/2016/04/04/strike-against-freedom-panorama/

The sentence you mentioned now reads:

The Court decided that Swedish copyright law does not allow Wikimedia
Sverige to post images in its online database offentligkonst.se (a website
/ database covering publicly placed art) without permission from the
artist.

There are also correction notes at the top and end of the post, and we’ve
updated our social media posts from the @Wikipedia Facebook and Twitter
accounts to acknowledge and reflect this correction.

Thank you,

Sam

[Wikimedia-l] Fwd: [Wikimedia Announcements] ‘Save the date’ for Wikipedia’s 15th birthday

Subject: Re: [Wikimedia Announcements] ‘Save the date’ for Wikipedia’s 15th
birthday
To: wikimediaannounc...@lists.wikimedia.org

Hi everyone,

We’re excited to share some new updates on plans for Wikipedia’s 15th
birthday.

TL;DR: We’ve designed a mark, Wikipedia 15, to be used, remixed, and built
on by the community as we celebrate Wikipedia’s 15th birthday.

Wikipedia 15 is a design concept offered to help Wikimedians across the
globe celebrate Wikipedia’s 15th birthday. But it’s not just about
celebrating Wikipedia. It’s about celebrating the birth of an idea, an idea
that helped shape the free and open knowledge movement. In the fifteen
years Wikipedia has existed, we've all come together to create something
worth celebrating, something worth protecting, and even something worth
arguing about. Wikipedia is a living, breathing collection of the people’s
knowledge. Every day we build it, every day we protect it, and every day we
enjoy it. We use it in every part of our daily lives. From looking up
something we're curious about, to winning an argument, to settling a bar
bet, to cramming for a test, to planning a trip, to learning a new skill.
Wikipedia is a cherished public trust. It's part of how we live now. 28% of
the planet has never known a world without Wikipedia.

Let's take this year to celebrate not just the fundamental ways Wikipedia
has changed how we learn, but also the small, joyous ways it's enriched our
lives. Knowledge is joy!

This year's mark is meant to be fun. And lighthearted. It can move! Or it
can be still. You can make it what you want to be. You can add objects that
are meaningful to you and where you live and what you do. You can use
objects to tell a story of what Wikipedia means to you.

How to use the Wikipedia 15 mark

The mark consists of two basic elements:

   -

an image/or animated group of images
   -

   text below

Other than keeping things in that order, you can reuse, remix, and enjoy
the mark in a variety of ways.

How to localize

We've provided a core set of 27 images
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_15/Material>, but we hope you
add your own and mix them in. You can use this in any graphics editing
program, including Inkscape <https://inkscape.org/>, which is free and open
source. You can add multiple images and make an animated GIF
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/GIF>! The words “Wikipedia 15” can be
replaced with any localized example in any language. The typeface we used
is OpenSans, free from Google Fonts and freely licensed under version 2.0
of the Apache License <https://www.apache.org/licenses/LICENSE-2.0.html>.

Taking the Wikipedia 15 mark further

The Wikipedia 15 mark can be used to produce celebratory merchandise,
identify special web pages or other digital content, make posters or
banners, name tags, birthday cakes, and much more. The designers developed
this sample guide (below) to show some of the possible uses of the marks.
Be creative and share your concepts and ideas in the gallery on the Wikipedia
15 meta page <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_15/Material>.

Please make them to share! But please do not use the name "Wikipedia" to
sell any items, or for other uses without checking the trademark policy
<https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Trademark_policy>.

The 27 images and guidelines for using the mark can be found under the material
section <https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia_15/Material> of the
Wikipedia 15 meta page. A huge thank you to our design team, Mule
<http://muledesign.com/>, who helped design and develop this fun and
inspiring creation. We can’t wait to see how you and your Wikimedia
community use this mark!

Please feel free to direct any questions to Sam Lien (sl...@wikimedia.org)
and Joe Sutherland (jsutherl...@wikimedia.org).

All the best,

Sam and Joe

(of the WMF Communications Team)
