[Wikimedia-l] New board of Wikimedia España

2021-04-15 Thread Santiago Navarro
Hello! Last Saturday, April 10th 2021, Wikimedia España celebrated its
General Meeting where a new board was elected after the end of the
period of three years for the last one. The meeting was celebrated
on-line due to restrictions because of COVID-19.

The new board is constituted as following:

President: Florencia Claes (user:Florenciac), former Vicepresident
Vicepresident: Mentxu Ramilo Araujo (user:Mentxuwiki), new in the board
Secretary: Ana Porras (user:Escalafandra), new in the board
Treasurer: Pedro Pacheco (user:Pedro J Pacheco), same position than in
the last board

Member: Ester Bonet (user:Tiputini), new in the board
Member: María Bolado (user:Trastolillo), same position than in the last
board

Member: Santiago Navarro Sanz (user:Millars), former President

The new board was elected by unanimity and it is the first time when we
have a woman for the position of President and also the first time with
a majority of women in the board.

Thank you very much to the board members who will not continue after
many years: Jorge Sierra Canduela (user:Lucien leGrey), Miguel García
San José (user:Rastrojo) and José Emilio Mori Recio (user:-jem-). In the
meeting we remembered Elena Sanz, former secretary, who passed away last
year.

In the meeting we also approve the activity and economical report for
2020 and the plan of activities and the budget for 2021.

The report for 2020 as a pdf file is linked here:

Hello all!

The Wikimedia Foundation Board has unanimously approved the changes to
the
Bylaws [1] during the last Board meeting on January 30, 2019. This
will be

covered in the minutes, and the resolution will be published in short
order.

This change allows the participation of User Groups [2] in the
Affiliate-selected Board seats (ASBS) 2019 process [3]. The
discussion
about this process should start as soon as possible in order to have
these
two seats selected by Wikimania. This is why we are sending this
letter

now, before the resolution is published.

There are now over 100 recognized User Groups, covering over 50
countries,

several languages and topics, many of whom represent new and emergent
communities within the Wikimedia movement. The Board believes that the
added perspectives of the User Groups, combined with the voices of
Chapters
and Thematic Organizations, will lead to a richer collection of
guidance
for our movement. The conversation about how User Groups may
participate in

this process has been on for years, it is not a new topic [4].

Once the facilitators of the Selection process are appointed by the
affiliates, they should work with María Sefidari, who has been chosen
by

the Board as the Board liaison for the ASBS process.

Given the potential complexity of organizing a process that now will
include over a hundred user groups, the Wikimedia Foundation is
offering

its support to set up infrastructure and help with communications if
requested by the affiliates.

Dear all,

I would like to inform you about my resignation from the Executive
Board of

Shared Knowledge, effective from 1 July 2019.

After spending almost ten years on the boards of Wikimedia Macedonia
and
Shared Knowledge with the last five years as president of Shared
Knowledge,

this was a difficult decision for me but, in order to allow the
organisation adapt to the ever-changing environment in the movement, it
seems like the right time to make this step has come. The reasons for
my
decision to step down are mostly personal, including lack of time, lack
of

motivation, and hunger for new challenges.

To give a better insight of my board experience, I can effectively
divide
it to two different but related periods: the first five years spent as
a

board member of Wikimedia Macedonia as a passive chapter were marked by
extensive learning about the movement and the programmes of the other
chapters with a limited amount of educational activities; the second
five
years spent as president of Shared Knowledge as an active user group
were

marked by executing the learning into practice with several programmes
abundant with projects and events.

The exact meaning of my resignation is, however, not retirement from
the

movement but rather a substantial reduction of the time spent on some
activities. My future plans are to remain active in the movement in
other

capacities.

I would like to thank you all for the collaboration so far and express
my
hopefulness to extend it in my non-presidential role from now on. I
will
not leave this mailing list and will continue following the news from

[Wikimedia-l] Elena Sanz passed away last night

2020-07-06 Thread Santiago Navarro
Hello. I have bad news, the kind of news we never want to have. Our
friend and colleage Elena Sanz (user ElsaBornFree) passed away last
night.

Elena Sanz was a strong, intelligent and brilliant woman. She joined
Wikimedia movement in 2014 and after two years she because secretary of
Wikimedia España, possition she had till now.

Many of you met her in many conferences and events, such as Wikimedia
Conferences, Wikimanias or Iberoconfs, but also meeting for advocacy in
the EU, the Wikipedia+education conference in Donostia, next to her home
town. A very active person, this has been a huge shock for all of us.

If you want to leave your condolences, you can write in a page created
for that on Spanish Wikipedia.[1] We wrote also a blog post dedicated to
her memory.[2]

As a president of Wikimedia España and a friend of her, I want to
express our condolences on behalf of Wikimedia España to his family and
friends. We will always remember her.

Hello, although finally 2020 is not an Olympic year, you can replace
some of that nostalgia by editing about the Olympic and Paralympic Games
(in any language) between 15 July and 15 August. There are many articles
to create and improve.

You can find more information on Meta page:

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia España has been recognized as a charity in Spain

2021-02-24 Thread Santiago Navarro
Hello. I have the pleasure to inform that last Friday, 19th February
2021, Wikimedia España was recognized as a charity (entidad de utilidad
pública) in Spain by the Ministry of the Interior and it was published
at the Boletín Oficial del Estado (Official State Gazette). This is a
recognition of the hard work the association has been doing last 10
years in Spain. To be recognized, it has been a long process, and we
were waiting for an answer for this application since the end of 2019. I
want to say thanks to all people who worked to achieve that.

Here you have a short entry in our website about that:

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia España has been recognized as a charity in Spain

2021-02-24 Thread Santiago Navarro
Yes. More or less, but in Spain, that 1% assigned to any charity does
not exist. People can give money to any association and the following
year, is it is a charity, there is a reduction of taxes over that
amount. And other duties and benefits.

Santiago, does it means that WM Espana has now tax exempt status like
WM Polska has over years? In Poland it means that 1 % of personal tax
can be transferred to WM Polska.

Anyway, it is great news, congratulations!

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Congratulations to the first four organizations to receive Simple Annual Plan Grants!

2015-12-30 Thread Santiago Navarro
Thank you Winifred for your words. I remember a discussion with Katy
Love in Mexico City and she shared with me that an APG needs very hard
work. After seeing a simple APG process I can say, yes, she was right.
This king of new grants is a new oportunity for groups that want to
apply for their first annual grant. I know that we must work a lot to
spend the money of the community the best as possible and get the more
impact as possible.

I want to say thank you to Winifred, but also Katy, Kacie and all the
people who helped us in with this. And of course, to the committee for
their recommendations.

El 2015-12-29 20:10, Winifred Olliff escribió:

Dear Wikimedia colleagues:

In response to feedback about the grants process

<http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:IdeaLab/Reimagining_WMF_grants/Outcomes>
that identified a gap in support for organizations and groups with
annual

plans that are not part of the FDC process
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:APG>, we on the WMF's
Community
Resources Team created a new pilot process for Simple Annual Plan
Grants
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:APG/Simple>. These grants are
for
groups and organizations that need funds for operating and program
expenses

up to US$100K (or its equivalent in another currency).

This process has been developed in partnership with a committee of
eight
volunteers
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Grants:APG/Simple/Committee>,

who make recommendations about each grant application, which are then
approved by WMF staff. I would like to recognize the outstanding work
of
our inaugural committee: Addis Wang, Anders Wennersten, Kiril
Simeonovski,
Kirill Lokshin, Ido Ivri, Nataliia Tymkiv, Pete Ekman, and Sydney
Poore.
Besides producing four quality recommendations this month (found on
the

discussion pages of the four applications

they've done invaluable work to define how this new funding option
will
work, and offered constructive and supportive feedback to the
applicants.

I also want to recognize and congratulate our first four grantees:
Wikimedia Czech Republic, Wikimedia Eesti, Wikimedia Espana, and
Shared
Knowledge (user group in Macedonia). Each grantee did an outstanding
job
engaging during every phase of the grants process, and we are
confident
that each is preparing for an amazing year in 2016. Many thanks to
all of
the dedicated volunteers and staff at each organization that made
these
quality applications happen, including Bojan Jankuloski, Jan Loužek,
Kiril
Simeonevski, Kaarel Vaidla, Luis Ulzurrun, Santiago Navarro, Vojtěch
Dostál
and the volunteer boards and supportive community members at each of
these

organizations.

Finally, thank you to our colleagues Janice Tud, Siko Bouterse,
Stephen
LaPorte, and the WMF finance team, for supporting these grantees
behind the

scenes. Thanks to Katy Love, Kacie Harold, and the entire Community
Resources Team, past and current Funds Dissemination Committee
members,

current and past APG applicants, and particularly Ravishankar
Ayyakkannu, for sharing their ideas and experiences leading up to
this

idea. Special thanks also to Tony Souter and Bence Damokos for their
substantial feedback during the early phases of the pilot's
development.

Are you interested in learning more about how the new funding option
could
work for your group or organization? Please Email me to start a
discussion
about your organization's application, and read more about how to
apply

Applications will be accepted throughout 2016.

Best wishes and congratulations to all our colleagues who received
grants

in 2015, or helped to improve the grants process!
