For blogs, I prefer using custom static site generators; wordpress and
mediawiki are too unreliable and quirky:

my take on it -
https://www.shlomifish.org/philosophy/philosophy/putting-cards-on-the-table-2019-2020/indiv-nodes/make-your-own-kind-of-music.xhtml

[[[

Make your own kind of music / Take your qualities to your advantage [
#make-your-own-kind-of-music ] Node Link

Similar to the Mama Cass Elliot song "make your own kind of music" or its Lady
Gaga modernisation "Born This Way", I have given an interpretation of Captain
Nemo (= "nobody" in Latin, and not to be confused with Nemo from the animated
film Finding Nemo) in Jules Verne's novel 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, whom
people keep finding interesting for what he believes are superficial reasons.
But these qualities are part of what makes us who we are.

The YouTuber band Cimorelli has used the fact that they are six sisters (who
also have five male brothers) in a large Roman Catholic family, a trend which
has received a lot of antagonism, from environmentalists, psychologists and the
media, to their advantage, and as a gimmick. As a result, they published many
videos of them covering hit songs, some original songs, and have been live
performing and collaborating with other singers and entertainers.

Naturally, they are not the only YouTube success story. But if you get an
opportunity, seize it. Were you invited to give a talk? Go for it. Even if you
were invited from the "wrong" reason, you will pave the road for future
lecturers. A sociology student invited you to talk to them about your work as
an open source / open content creator? Go for it. You thought of a new Chuck
Norris/etc. factoid? Write it down and share it on social media and chat.
Someone asked you out and you like them and are single? Go for it. You have an
idea for a nice video, story, screenplay, song, etc. Execute it.

I used to be jealous of Ayn Rand for writing so lucidly and coherently in The
Fountainhead and in Atlas Shrugged, whereas my style of screenplays and stories
was what I described as "staccato" where I do not mention any unnecessary
details. However, Rand likely felt the same way about Dostoevsky and Tolstoy,
whose overly verbose style is now the terror and hatred of many Literature
students.

Similarly, current and future generations will likely appreciate my staccato
style more than Ayn Rand’s. Make your own kind of music!

Hi Florence and all!

Sorry for the late reply; see below for the text.

[One note first: despite what the "i" suffix may imply to English speakers, I
am a (genetic, non-trans/etc.) male. "Shlomi Fish" is my real and legal
name, but I also have adopted or been called by several nicknames, some of
which I still approve of which include "Rindolf" or "Slimy Fish". For more
info about all that, you may wish to peruse the first questions in my home

While one likely cannot be completely objective, I believe that we should try
to be as objective as possible, and not completely succumb to being subjective.

I had written about it here:

https://shlomif.livejournal.com/52439.html

Similarly, while the WMF has some shared political stances due to its mission
and objectives, it should try to avoid officially taking a stance on
politically-tangential issues that are out of that scope and which have no
consensus among its members, contributors and users. Otherwise, its
effectiveness in accomplishing its mission may be reduced, and we may lose or
alienate many members.

Just my opinion,

Hi all!

Just to note that I support keeping the "Wikimedia" brand rather than renaming
to "Wikipedia" because there are several other important and popular wikimedia

Like I said, I do not find the current https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page
design lacking, except for the fact it may not be mobile-friendly (or so called
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Responsive_web_design ) enough, which is a
difficult problem to tackle.

I took a look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page and it doesn't look
anything like a geocities/etc. site from the 90s, and I feel it doesn't look
bad.

For the record that was my site at around 1998 -
https://old-1998-site.shlomifish.org/ and people complained enough that my
current site looks like "[insert year here]" that I added a FAQ entry:

https://www.shlomifish.org/meta/FAQ/site_looks_old.xhtml

See https://everybootstrap.site/ for how many contemporary sites look like.

Someone on freenode told me he thinks plain black-on-white sites look great.

Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build
bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the universe trying to produce
bigger and better idiots. So far, the universe is winning.

this link is somewhat offtopic, but relevant to an earlier discussion:

it seems well-researched and informative.

Among other things, it tries to refute the common argument that Linux will have
a virus popular when and if it becomes more popular.

Most linux viruses have never outbroke and never caused much harm. Linux can be
susceptible to other forms of malware such as worms or rootkits, but it hasyet
to exhibit a large scale virus epidemic and it isnt because it wasn't tried.
Linux is an attractive target because many servers run on it. See also

From my experience, anti-virus programs usually do more harm than good. For
example, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Norton_AntiVirus recently blocked my
entire shlomifish.org domain because it apparently misclassified an executable
download as problematic (and it was built from source using
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/CMake and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AppVeyor
so it is unlikely that that is the case.). MS Windows' poor resistance to
malware and the fact that Windows Update is so dysfunctional (see
http://www.shlomifish.org/humour/bits/facts/Windows-Update/ ) are the reasons
why I cannot recommend running it as a desktop, and instead one should use
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux#Desktop - desktop linux or similar.

A little off topic perhaps, but needs to be said.

First of all note that I appreciate r.e.b's contributions and thank him for
them.

That put aside: that article is clearly marked as "humour" based on the URL.
Should it still be taken seriously? Furthermore, how much do Signpost humour
articles reflect the official stance of the Wikimedia Foundation? Finally, note
that it is expected that one's work will face some criticism, either valid or
false, and one should learn to cope with it. I've written about it here -
http://shlomifishswiki.branchable.com/Encourage_criticism_and_try_to_get_offended/
and here -
http://shlomifishswiki.branchable.com/Never_Try_to_Please_Everyone/ .

I'm not saying that signpost piece is commendable, but it should be taken in
proportion.

Well, I was happy that two of my Reddit subreddits' posts proved popular and
sparked some discussion over there. I also started setting up this page on my
personal wiki (based on https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ikiwiki ) for the ongoing
"/dev/null is WebScale" meme -
http://shlomifishswiki.branchable.com/slash-dev-null_is_WebScale/ . There was
also a facebook discussion about it, but I'll have to ask the person I talked
with for permission to share it - it was both amusing and insightful.

Anyway, I'm not too active on wikimedia wikis - mostly just fixing typos and
doing other cleanups as I go.

The other day someone on freenode spelled "exercise" as "exercize", twice in
the same sentence, and when I pointed to him that it was not the correct
spelling, he insisted it was the American English spelling. However, both
https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Special:Search?search=exercize=8jsnwk7uwxs57egwx936j59d9
and https://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/exercize agreed with me that it
was not a correct spelling, even in American English. And he claimed I was
trolling. Oh well.

[Wikimedia-l] “Reliable”, “Notable”, and “Encyclopaedic” Sources for Automated Solvers for FreeCell

2015-12-28 Thread Shlomi Fish
Hi all,

in case you don't know, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FreeCell is a
single-player card game, that became popular after being included in
some versions of Microsoft Windows. Now, the English Wikipedia entry about it
used to contain during at least two times in the past, some relatively short
sections about several automated solvers that have been written for it.
However, they were removed due to being considered "non-notable" or
"non-Encyclopaedic".

Right now there's only this section -
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FreeCell#Solver_complexity which talks about the
fact that FreeCell was proved to be NP-complete.

I talked about it with a friend, and he told me I should try to get a
"reliable source" news outlet/newspaper to write about such solvers (including
I should add my own over at http://fc-solve.shlomifish.org/ , though the
sections on the FreeCell Wikipedia entry did not exclusively cover it.).

Recently I stumbled upon this paper written by three computer scientists, then
at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev:

*
http://www.genetic-programming.org/hc2011/06-Elyasaf-Hauptmann-Sipper/Elyasaf-Hauptmann-Sipper-Paper.pdf

* There's some analysis of this paper in this thread in the fc-solve-discuss
Yahoo Group:

https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/fc-solve-discuss/conversations/messages/1388

The solver mentioned in the paper can solve 98% of the first 32,000 Microsoft
FreeCell deals. However, several hobbyist solvers (= solvers that were written
outside the Academia and may incorporate techniques that are less fashionable
there, and that were not submitted for Academic peer review) that were written
by the time the article published, have been able to solve all deals in the
first MS 32,000 deals except one (#11,982), which is widely believed to be
impossible, and which they fully traverse without a solution.

Finally, I should note that I've written a Perl 5/CPAN distribution to verify
that the FreeCell solutions generated by my solver (and with some potential
future work - other solvers) are correct, and I can run it on the output of
my solver on the MS 32,000 deals on my Core i3 machine in between 3 and 4
minutes.[Verification]

===

Now my questions are:

1. Can this paper be considered a reliable, notable, and/or Encyclopaedic source
that can hopefully deter and prevent future Deletionism?

2. Can I cite the fc-solve-discuss’s thread mentioning the fact that there are
hobbyist solvers in question that perform better in this respect - just for
"Encyclopaedic" completeness sake, because the scientific paper in question
does not mention them at all.

===

Sorry this E-mail was quite long, but I wanted to present all the facts. As you
can tell, I've become quite frustrated at Wikipedia deletionism and the hoops
one has to overcome in order to cope with them.

Regards,

Shlomi Fish

[Verification] - one note is that all these programs were not verified/proved
as correct by a proof verifier such as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coq , so
there is a small possibility that they have insurmountable bugs. Note that I
did write some automated tests for them.

[Wikimedia-l] Fw: Just say no to TPP

Subject: Just say no to TPP

Creative Commons
After five years of secret negotiations between governments and corporate
lobbyists, the public has finally seen the text of the Trans-Pacific
Partnership (TPP), and the details are bad.

The provisions covering intellectual property directly threaten the public
interest and the commons. We believe the TPP should be rejected, and we need
everyone opposed to this attack on the commons to stand with us.

Add your name to oppose the TPP!
<https://donate.creativecommons.org/sites/all/modules/civicrm/extern/url.php?u=4098=2228998>

The TPP increases the term of copyright an additional 20 years for half of the
participating countries. This makes no sense. Copyright already lasts far
longer than is necessary—life of the author plus 50 years in most parts of the
world.

And extending copyright has real costs. New Zealand estimates that lengthening
copyright will cost the public $55 million per year. In Canada, it could exceed
$100 million per year.

The public is losing out when millions of creative works are kept locked up
under copyright instead of rising into the public domain, where they can be
used freely by anyone.

It’s not too late to make your voice heard. The participating governments now
have to decide whether to ratify it.

We think the TPP should be rejected. Do you agree?

Only a groundswell of opposition can stop the TPP, and it starts with your
signature and comments against the harmful TPP. Sign today!

[Wikimedia-l] Constants and Low-Interest Posts to the Wikimedia Announcement Newsletter

2015-11-13 Thread Shlomi Fish
Hi all,

I'm subscribed to wikimediaannounc...@lists.wikimedia.org and it
receives constant posting of low interest posts such as "This month in GLAM" or
"The Signpost" stuff. This gets annoying because I expect the newsletter to
announce only really big announcements that interest me or require my
attention, and that appear infrequently.

There's also a risk similar to
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Boy_Who_Cried_Wolf that really significant
announcements will be ignored due to people getting used to not paying attention
to the less significant ones.

Can someone take it to heart? If it continues, I'll have to unsubscribe from
the newsletter.

Regards,

Shlomi Fish

The book will be under a license compatible with the Open Definition,

I wanted to donate to that (after being encouraged to donate by a friend who
had a birthday on Facebook), but I didn't find a way to donate using PayPal -
only directly using a credit card. As a result, I ended up donating on
creativecommons.org, but I'm not sure my donation will go to the book. I wonder
if indiegogo has the same problem as Kickstarter from this respect or if it
would have been a better choice.
