[Wikimedia-l] Thank you. And keep up the good work!

2021-05-31 Thread Abraham Taherivand
Dear Wikimedians,

As you know, today is my last day as the Executive Director of Wikimedia
Deutschland.

What an incredible journey it has been. When I started in 2012, I couldn’t
have even dreamed of all the things I would experience, what I would do,
whom I would meet, where I would go, and what I would learn. And then it
all turned out to be even more intense, more magical, and more fulfilling
than I had thought or could have imagined in my boldest dreams.

In 2012, when Pavel Richter brought me into the organisation to build up
the Wikidata team and to bootstrap the project together with Denny
Vrandečić, I already had a slight notion that something huge that was about
to emerge; “Wikidata, the next big thing” still echoes in my ears today.
The vision of this free and open knowledge base excited and inspired me
from day one. It was an honour for me to establish the initial Wikidata
team and later to build the software development department at Wikimedia
Deutschland. I could really follow my passion to bring people together,
empowering them, promoting their strengths and challenging them to be
innovative, to try new things off the beaten track.

Then in 2016, a whole new phase began when I was appointed as Executive
Director. Over these four and a half years, Wikimedia Deutschland has grown
considerably: our staff has doubled to 150 and we now have over 85,000
members. Together with a large and successful community, we work as a
strong and respected partner together with educational and cultural
institutions, politics, media and digital civil society to liberate
knowledge. Alongside these audience groups in Germany, the Wikimedia
Movement - you! - has always been one of the most exciting and relevant
stakeholders. I am therefore particularly pleased that we and our members
unanimously decided in 2017 to support the 2030 Strategic Direction and its
implementation, that we were able to play a strong role in the development
of the recommendations, and that we are now continuing to pursue the
implementation with all our might.

I have had the great privilege of getting to know and learning from many of
you personally. The vast array of experience that Wikimedians bring to the
Movement, the rich ideas, and the people at the heart of it all are truly
extraordinary. In each Wikimedian I’ve met, I’ve felt the passion for the
overarching theme of our common vision. The spark in your eyes when you
start speaking about your favourite topics, be it the encyclopedia,
technology, governance, photos, food, commas, fondue, karaoke – it’s
impressive and a memory that I am glad will remain with me forever. What
each of you bring to this Movement is inspiring and truly special - and
that’s what makes this movement more than the sum of its parts.

It never gets boring in the wikiverse. There is always something new coming
along, be it in movement strategy, in our programs, or in how we work
together and grow our reach. At times, it can take awhile to get things
done. But that is often because we want to make sure everyone has a say and
has the opportunity to shape how we do things. It is a testament to the
respect Wikimedians have for each other and each other’s perspectives.
Wikimedians are very thoughtful: we take care of each other and treat each
other's needs and opinions as one of the highest goods.

Wikimedia is one of the strongest and last-standing proponents of the free
and open internet, one that continues to work toward making digital society
better for the sake of humanity.

Don’t give up this fight, don’t lose hope, be bold, unite – the world needs
you!

Yours sincerely,

Abraham

[Wikimedia-l] Personal news // ED transition

2021-01-26 Thread Abraham Taherivand
Dear fellow Wikimedians,

Today I am informing you that I will not be renewing my contract with
Wikimedia Deutschland, which runs until January 2022. This decision was not
easy for me because Wikimedia has been such an important, even central,
part of my life in the past nine years. After thorough introspection, I
feel that this step is the right one for me and for our organisation.

This means that a successor will have to be found for the position of the
Executive Director. The search is managed by our Supervisory Board and me
with support of an external executive search firm. The search process has
been well prepared in recent weeks and I am working closely with our board
on each of the steps.

Together, we will ensure a good handover and transition to my successor.
This point is very important to me, as is the fact that we will continue to
work without losing focus on achieving our goals, on working with the
entire movement, and on collaborating very closely on movement strategy
implementation. That's why I don't want to say a big goodbye right now.

What’s next

   -

In cooperation with the external executive search firm Kienbaum, we have
developed a search profile and a job posting that will go online shortly.
   -

We strive to have someone on board well before the end of my term in
January 2022. As we have commenced the procedure so early, we are on a very
   good track.

   -

I also consider it essential to be available for a comprehensive
transition and onboarding of a new Executive Director.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Best regards,

Abraham

We are aware that this announcement will cause many questions (not only in
relation to the Summit). Please be patient, more information will follow

[Wikimedia-l] Join us at the Wikimedia Summit in Berlin on 3-5 April 2020

2019-11-06 Thread Abraham Taherivand
Dear Wikimedia Affiliates,

It’s with great pleasure that we invite movement Affiliates to join us at
the Wikimedia Summit 2020, which will be held at Seminaris Conference
Center in Berlin from 3-5 April.[1]

With the Wikimedia Summit 2019, we refocused the event entirely on Movement
Strategy and Wikimedia’s path towards 2030. Building upon this concept,
next year’s Summit will again be designed around the needs and
opportunities of “Wikimedia 2030”.[2]

In spring 2020, the recommendations for change will be finalized and we
will have clarity on how to adapt to move strongly and successfully in the
movement’s Strategic Direction. The Wikimedia Summit 2020 will be an
important transition away from strategy development and into the long
awaited implementation of the recommended changes. The event will first aim
to create clarity and shared understanding of the recommendations, and then
initiate the implementation across movement organizations in a
collaborative way. The main part of that conversation is to discuss
prioritization and sequencing of the recommendations, and agree upon
responsibilities in bringing each recommendation to life – globally,
regionally, and on the local level. This will have to be a deeply
collaborative process, engaging all parts of the movement together.

We invite all eligible Wikimedia affiliates to be part of this
conversation. To ensure that we use the in-person time as best as possible,
we ask Affiliates to only send delegates who will come with a good
understanding of the movement strategy process and the draft
recommendations, and are ready to take agency and responsibility to design
and implement the recommendations in collaboration with every part of the
Movement and our partners. We will ensure these criteria are met by asking
targeted questions in the registration form.

As the recommendations affect every part of the movement, from WMF to
affiliates and beyond, we will need all the right people at the table to
design the implementation. A number of Board and staff members of the
Wikimedia Foundation and Wikimedia Deutschland will take part at the event,
and we are also looking forward to invite of some members of the final
writing group and of the Affiliations Committee to join us in Berlin.

The registration to the event will open tomorrow, so watch out for the
email with all logistical information around the event including contact
details.

On behalf of our organizations, we are looking forward to welcoming you in
Berlin in April!

Best regards,

Abraham Taherivand, Wikimedia Deutschland

[Wikimedia-l] Wikimedia Conference: Join us in Berlin in April 2018!

2017-11-28 Thread Abraham Taherivand
Wikimedia Conference 2018

https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Conference_2018

Date: April 20 – April 22, 2018

Registration: November 29 – January 15, 2018

Dear Wikimedians,

It’s with great pleasure that I invite Wikimedia Affiliates, the WMF Board
of Trustees and staff, the Affiliations Committee, and the Funds
Dissemination Committee to the Wikimedia Conference 2018. The main
conference will take place in Berlin from April 20 to 22, 2018.

Wikimedia Deutschland staff and board are looking forward to creating and
hosting another event that contributes to the development of the Wikimedia
Movement. We are hoping to see a diverse group of participants this year,
and look forward to creating three days of working, thinking, and learning
together. The event is made possible through the generous financial support
of the Wikimedia Foundation.

As in the previous years, the program will be built along three thematic
tracks:

Movement Strategy: The Wikimedia Conference will be one of the major forums
for conversations about the future of the movement. Together, we will
discuss how movement groups can implement Wikimedia’s new Strategic
Direction “Service and Equity”, and how roles, responsibilities and
resources can be shared across the movement.

Partnerships in the Wikimedia Movement: Based on the conversations at the
last Wikimedia Conference, Wikimania, and regional Wikimedia conferences,
we aim to continue to offer a space for conversations, experience sharing
and learning around partnerships within and outside the Wikimedia movement.

Capacity Building & Learning: We will again host a track with sessions that
are designed according to the participants’ needs, wishes and experiences
as expressed during the registration process.

Registration will open on the 29th of November, 2017. Cornelius Kibelka,
Program and Engagement Coordinator, and Daniela Gentner, Event Coordinator,
will keep you updated about the program design and the logistics in the
coming weeks and months.

On behalf of Wikimedia Deutschland, I am looking forward to welcoming many
of you in Berlin in April.

Kind regards,

Abraham
