Re: [Wikimedia-l] Monthly skill share idea

2018-10-15 Thread Arne Wossink
Hi all,

Wikimedia Nederland has done something similar last year. We've organized a
couple of evenings that were also streamed online. Topics included Commons
(photography tips & uploading), Wikidata, copyright, mass-uploading
(Pattypan mostly). Feel free to contact me for more details.

Best,

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Cheat sheets visual editing on Wikipedia

2018-07-17 Thread Arne Wossink
Hi Lodewijk,

That's interesting. I get the same issue as you're reporting when I look at
the page in Commons. However, when I download and open the sheet, the text
runaround conforms to the text boxes, but is rendered in a different font.
So there's definitely something wrong in how the SVG is saved from the
original Illustrator format.

As I'm not an expert in converting images to SVG, is there someone else who
recognizes this issue and knows how to solve it? Alternatevely, I can make
the AI files available to someone with more experience in converting them
to SVG.

Best,

2018-07-12 Thread Arne Wossink
Hi all,

I just uploaded the SVG versions of the cheat sheets:

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Voeg_je_eerste_referentie_toe_aan_Wikipedia.svg
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Maak_een_account_aan_op_Wikipedia.svg

https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Cheat_sheet_Visual_editing_on_Wikipedia.svg
https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Doe_je_eerste_bewerking_op_Wikipedia.svg

As before, I'm still happy to work with anyone to get more language
versions online if you don't the right editing software, but this should
get others going as well.

Re: [Wikimedia-l] Cheat sheets visual editing on Wikipedia

2018-07-11 Thread Arne Wossink
@Strainu: once the English translations are available, you could translate
those into Romanian, and I could help you with formatting them. As long as
the texts are as long as the English ones (or shorter), that shouldn't be
too hard. Since there's one available in English already, you could start
the translation of that one right away, if you want.

@Advrk Aplmrkt: that's a good suggestion! I'll see if I can upload SVG
versions of the files as well.

[Wikimedia-l] Cheat sheets visual editing on Wikipedia

2018-07-10 Thread Arne Wossink
Hi all,

For WMNL I've been working on several 1-page cheat sheets on how to edit
Wikipedia in visual editing mode, to be used during editathons. These
currently include "create an account", "make your first edit", "insert a
reference", "upload an image to Wikimedia Commons", and a general cheat
sheet on the visual editor. They're all in Dutch, except for the Visual
editing cheat sheet, which is also available in English.

If anyone's interested in having these available in their own language, I'm
more than happy to work with them to make these available (time
permitting). Source files are available in Adobe Illustrator format, so I
can make those available as well to those who would like to do the editing
themselves.

[Wikimedia-l] Wikipedia activity of researchers on CV

2018-04-03 Thread Arne Wossink
Hi all,

I was wondering if there are researchers/educators who put Wikipedia
articles they've written/contributed to (or more in general their Wikimedia
activity) on their list of publications or CV, and if so, in what way
(listing user name, listing specific articles/contributions, etc.).

Best,

[Wikimedia-l] Feedback requested for Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform

2017-07-27 Thread Arne Wossink
(Apologies for cross-posting)

Dear all,

The Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform
<https://netherlandsworld.nl/> went online in April 2017. A few months
later, we would now like to collect some feedback on the platform:

* If you’ve signed up on the platform but never got around to using it, or
if you looked at the platform but didn’t sign up, we would like to hear
about that.

* If you’ve never heard of the Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform
before, we would like to hear about that too.

* In general, we are also interested to get feedback about the platform
itself. So, whether you’ve already had a look at it, or just learned about
it from this email, we would appreciate it if you would take a few minutes
to browse the website and share with us your thoughts on its purpose, the
available functionality, the layout, things that you’re missing that should
be there, suggestions, etc.

Feel free to share your thoughts on my talk page, this mailing list or
email me directly if you don’t want to share your thoughts in public. Your
feedback will be invaluable to help us decide how to move forward with the
Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform.

Thank you!

Regards,

Arne Wossink

[Wikimedia-l] Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform is online

2017-03-16 Thread Arne Wossink
(apologies for cross-posting)

Wikimedia Nederland launches the Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform
<https://netherlandsworld.nl/>. The platform aims to stimulate global
re-use of Dutch collections on non-European cultural heritage. In
particular, it aims to stimulate collections on countries with which the
Netherlands have had historical ties. These countries include Indonesia,
Sri Lanka, Brazil, Ghana, Suriname, South Africa, and others.

The platform also aims to foster contacts between Dutch cultural heritage
institutions and Wikimedia contributors across the globe. However,
participation is not limited to Wikimedia contributors. Anyone can
participate, making it relevant for education and research as well.

Key properties:

   -

Dutch heritage institutions can post offers on (parts of) their
collections that are relevant to non-European countries
   -

Wikimedia contributors gain insight in the contents of Dutch collections
and can make requests for digitalisation.
   -

Knowledge exchange and cooperation are key concepts.

The platform is easy to use. After registration, users can post
offer/requests notices, depending on whether they are looking for material,
or want to offer material for re-use. Statistics on re-use are also
available.

The Netherlands and the World Exchange Platform is part of the program The
Netherlands and the World
<https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Wikimedia_Nederland/The_Netherlands_and_the_world>.
This program is supported by Wikimedia Nederland and aims to make available
knowledge and content on non-European countries.

Development of the platform was financially supported by DEN.

[Wikimedia-l] Erasmus Prize award ceremony

2015-07-07 Thread Arne Wossink
Wikipedia has been awarded the prestigious Erasmus Prize 2015. This prize
is awarded annually to a person or institution that has made an exceptional
contribution to culture, society or social science. Wikipedia was chosen
because the Internet encyclopedia provides worldwide access to knowledge in
an open and democratic way. The award goes specifically to the
international Wikipedia community, the volunteers behind Wikipedia. [
http://www.erasmusprijs.org/?lang=enpage=Erasmusprijs]

On Wednesday 25 November, the King of the Netherlands will present this
award to three members of the international Wikipedia community who each
represent a different aspect of what Wikipedia stands for and hopes to
achieve. [
http://www.erasmusprijs.org/?lang=enpage=Nieuwsmode=detailitem=Award+Ceremony+Erasmus+Prize+to+Wikipedia+Community
]

Members of the international Wikipedia community are welcome to attend the
award ceremony, which will take place in the Royal Palace of Amsterdam, on
25 November. The event is free, but travel expenses are at own costs.

On behalf of the Praemium Erasmianum Foundation, Wikimedia Nederland is
compiling an invitation list of Wikipedians that are interested and able to
attend.
If you are a Wikipedia editor and you would like to be present, sign up on
the guest list as soon as possible. Enrollment is possible by sending a
Wikipedia mail to user:FrankTMeijer or listing your name on the list here [
https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Uitreiking_Erasmusprijs#Inschrijflijst
](in Dutch only). Deadline for enrollment is 12 July.

Please note that:

*Enrolling on the guest list does not yet ensure that you can attend the
event. In case the number of interested people exceeds the number of
available seats in the audience, further selection will take place. Since
spaces are limited, we therefore kindly ask you to only sign up if you are
absolutely certain that you can attend.

*Invitees will need to reveal their real name and address details to
Wikimedia Nederland, which in turn will pass them to the Praemium
Erasmianum Foundation, so that invitation letters can be sent out.

*Due to the presence of the King, a very strict security protocol will be
in place. Guests need to present themselves with invitation and need to be
able to identify themselves.

*This is a formal event where a dress code (tenue de ville) will be in
place.

*While the event itself is free, travel to and from the Netherlands is not
and these costs will not be reimbursed.

Best regards,

Arne Wossink, Frank Meijer
