Re: [Wikimedia-l] Farewell
Hi folks, I would like to thank all of you who have contacted me on and off-list with your warm wishes. Working with you and so many other community members is what made this job so special for me over the years. I will miss our collaborations and hope we’ll get a chance to work together again down the line. And yes, I hope to be able to contribute new content as a volunteer, now that I will have more time for this type of work. In the meantime, I invite you to continue to work with others to grow ‘a culture of kindness’ (1) in all that you do, so that our movement can reach its full potential — the real opportunity ahead is a lot more about nurturing a welcoming and productive culture than it is about building technology, and we sometimes forget that. Thanks again for reaching out to me, and for being such great partners — I look forward to more great collaborations with many of you down the line. :) Regards as ever, Fabrice (1) A Culture of Kindness https://blog.wikimedia.org/2014/12/23/a-culture-of-kindness/ https://blog.wikimedia.org/2014/12/23/a-culture-of-kindness/ P.S.: Sorry about my previous email, which was intended to be sent privately. Dear Ziko, Thanks so much for your kind words, which mean a lot to me. :) I too have enjoyed working with you and appreciate all that you do for our movement. Re: [Wikimedia-l] Love on the wikis
Thanks for your feedback, MZ, Pine, Emily and John, I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed this content collection about love. We’ll review the impact of this curation experiment at the end of next week and share our findings afterwards. I like Pine’s suggestion of hosting an office hours on this general topic. We’re planning a community outreach about the Wikimedia Blog next month, to learn how it and related media can best serve the needs of our movement. This seems like a good way to continue the conversation and I will propose a date here in coming weeks. In the meantime, we welcome more feedback in the comments of this blog post: https://blog.wikimedia.org/2015/02/13/love-on-the-wikis/ To be clear, when I asked ‘should we do this more often?’, I didn’t propose to restrict these experiments to just the topic of ‘love’. There are many other interesting topics for which we could surface great wiki content together: freedom, education, diversity or civility come to mind, for example. Or major news stories throughout the year. Other ideas welcome. If these experiments turn out to be useful and cost-effective, we might consider hosting them monthly or quarterly, as needed. Thanks again to everyone who participated in this quest for the many meanings of love. I look forward to continuing this discussion in coming weeks. :) Fabrice Date: Sun, 15 Feb 2015 09:09:55 +1100 From: John Mark Vandenberg jay...@gmail.com To: Wikimedia Mailing List wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Subject: Re: [Wikimedia-l] Love on the wikis Message-ID: cao9u_z7t-x1ukaw5prj69rz9jrzyehoewfecqbvq+uyjjsd...@mail.gmail.com Content-Type: text/plain; charset=UTF-8 On Sun, Feb 15, 2015 at 4:13 AM, Emily Blanchard eblanch...@wikimedia.org wrote: Thanks Fabrice! [Wikimedia-l] [Wikimedia Announcements] Joining the WMF Communications team
Hi folks, I am happy to announce that I will be joining the Wikimedia Foundation's Communications team as Movement Communications Manager for a period of six months. I have really enjoyed my work as product manager at WMF in the past 3 years, leading the development of new tools like Notifications, Thanks, Beta Features, Media Viewer and other multimedia products [1]. One of the lessons I learned during that time is that 'better communications' are really important to make our movement more effective. I also think that growing a 'culture of kindness' is key if we want to engage a broader community [2]. I hope to support both of these goals in my new role. Starting this week, I will be working with the communications team on the Wikimedia blog and general WMF/movement communications. My focus for the blog will include improving contributor workflow for community members and WMF staff, and providing editorial guidance for contributors. I will also act as the main contact point for authors submitting new blog posts, and shepherd the publication process. Within movement communications, I will work to improve the availability, distribution, and timeliness of communications from the WMF to the broader community. I will also manage a range of movement communications tasks previously handled by Tilman Bayer, who is transitioning to the WMF Product team as Senior Analyst. One of my new duties is managing this WikimediaAnnounce-l list. Because this list gets so much spam, we manually review all submissions several times per day, until a reliable machine filter can be implemented. Please contact me if you have an urgent announcement that needs to go out immediately, or if you have any issues about this list. I’d like to thank all my colleagues on the multimedia and product teams -- as well as our many community champions -- for being such wonderful collaborators over the past few years. I am proud of what we accomplished together, and I hope that the features we created can help many more people share knowledge productively in years to come. Special thanks to Erik Moeller for his thoughtful guidance throughout the past three years -- and for making this transition possible. Kudos as well to Tilman for being such a wonderful coach and getting me up to speed on tasks he used to handle so efficiently. :) I'm delighted to take on this new assignment, and look forward to more collaborations with you all in the coming year. [Wikimedia-l] RfC: Should we support MP4 Video on our sites?
Greetings! The Wikimedia Foundation's multimedia team (1) seeks your guidance on a proposal to support the MP4 video format. As you know, this digital video standard is used widely around the world to record, edit and watch videos on mobile phones, desktop computers and home video devices. It is also known as H.264/MPEG-4 or AVC. (2) Supporting the MP4 format would make it much easier for our users to view and contribute video on Wikimedia projects -- and video files could be offered in dual formats on our sites, so we could continue to support current open formats (WebM and Ogg Theora). However, MP4 is a patent-encumbered format, and using a proprietary format would be a departure from our current practice of only supporting open formats on our sites -- even though the licenses appear to have acceptable legal terms, with only a small fee required. We would appreciate your guidance on whether or not we should support MP4 on our sites. The Request for Comments presents views both in favor and against MP4 support, based on opinions we’ve heard in our discussions with community and team members. What do you think? We would be grateful for your comments here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Requests_for_comment/MP4_Video All users are welcome to participate, whether you are active on Commons, Wikipedia, other Wikimedia project -- or any site that uses content from our free media repository. We also invite you to join our Office Hours Chat on IRC this Thursday, January 16, at 19:00 UTC, if you would like to discuss this project with our team and other community members: https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/IRC_office_hours#Upcoming_office_hours We look forward to a constructive discussion with you, so we can make a more informed decision together about this important question. Re: [Wikimedia-l] A Multimedia Vision for 2016
Dear Gerard, Thank you so much for your kind words about the proposed Multimedia Vision for Wikimedia sites by 2016. (1) I am glad that our first user stories resonate with you. They intentionally focus on ways that our community may interact through multimedia -- and we view these types of productive collaborations between different user groups as a key objective for our work. We really appreciate your thoughtful blog post about this vision (2) and fully agree with you that more user stories will be needed to illustrate the scope of possible interactions between different communities around the world -- from schools to professional or personal sites around the world. We aim to identify more user stories like these to inform our next steps. We are actively working with Lydia, Daniel and the Wikidata team to implement structured data on Commons and integrate it with Wikidata later this year, in collaboration with our community. We expect this work will improve a range of multimedia workflows as a result, from curation to search and beyond. We will definitely address the points you raise. I would also like to thank all the community members who have joined our discussion about this multimedia vision (3). We are grateful for your feedback, and very glad to see a partnership develop between our community and the foundation around these goals, so we may better serve our users together. It describes not only a functionality that is technical, it also describes how our community may interact. That is great. What I missed are the consequences of the planned integration of Commons with Wikidata. I blogged about it [1] and I suggest three more stories that could be told because they are enabled by this integration. What I do not fully understand is how the community aspects will integrate in an environment that will be more multi lingual and multi cultural as a consequence. I have confidence that the three stories that I suggest will be realised by 2016. Not only that, I am pretty sure that as a consequence the amount of traffic that our servers will have to handle will grow enormously to the extend that I am convinced that our current capacity will not be able to cope. Then again, they are the luxury problems that make us appreciate how much room we still have for growth. Thanks, GerardM [1] http://ultimategerardm.blogspot.nl/2014/01/wikimedia-multimedia-featuresvision-2016.html On 10 January 2014 01:39, Fabrice Florin fflo...@wikimedia.org wrote: Happy new year, everyone! [Wikimedia-l] A Multimedia Vision for 2016
Happy new year, everyone! Many thanks to all of you who contributed to our multimedia programs last year! Now that we have a new multimedia team at WMF, we look forward to making some good progress together this year. To kick off the new year, here is a proposed multimedia vision for 2016, which was prepared by our multimedia and design teams, with guidance from community members: http://blog.wikimedia.org/2014/01/09/multimedia-vision-2016/ This possible scenario is intended for discussion purposes, to help us visualize how we could improve our user experience over the next three years. We hope that it will spark useful community feedback on some of the goals we are considering. After you’ve viewed the video, we would be grateful if you could share your feedback in this discussion: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons_talk:Multimedia_Features/Vision_2016 We are looking from feedback from all users who benefit from Commons, even if their work takes place on other sites. This vision explores ways to integrate Wikimedia Commons more closely with Wikipedia and other MediaWiki projects, to help users contribute more easily to our free media repository -- wherever they are. In coming weeks, we will start more focused discussions on some key features outlined in this presentation. If you would like to join those conversations and stay informed on our work, we invite you to subscribe to our multimedia mailing list: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/multimedia We look forward to more great collaborations in the new year! Re: [Wikimedia-l] Beta Features Launch Worldwide
Hi Liam, Thanks so much for your good feedback about Beta Features. (1) I am glad you view this program as a positive development and think this tool can give users more control over their experience, as well as encourage more reasoned conversations during feature development, while reducing the stress for everyone. So like you, we're very hopeful about the potential of this tool for enabling more effective collaborations between foundation and community members. Already, we're getting invaluable feedback on discussion pages like this one for Media Viewer (2). On that note, a newer version of Media Viewer is now ready for testing on MediaWiki.org, which displays larger images for a more immersive experience, as shown on this demo page (3). This new version will automatically be deployed on English Wikipedia's Beta Features section in early December, but we would love to get early feedback, if anyone is interested. To learn more, check out this overview of that new Media Viewer version. (4) Last but not least, kudos to all the folks who contributed to this skunkworks program, across many different teams: Jared Zimmerman, Mark Holmquist, James Forrester, Jon Robson,May Galloway, Keegan Peterzell, and Erik Moeller, to name but a few :) While no particular team had a mandate to start this program, we all felt it was the right thing to do -- and just got it done. Sometimes the best projects come from these kinds of serendipitous collaborations. :) Onward! Making new features *opt-in*, and making it easy to return back is a healthy way of getting wider usage and feedback IMO. Also, the ability for a user to chose to automatically receive all new Beta functions, or to manually select the individual elements that they like, is a nice touch too. I think that, culturally as much as technologically, having a beta track for ALL new elements is a good procedure to have. It will provide consistent and clear expectations of what's happening (and a clear place to provide feedback that is actually answered) - not having that is a large factor IMHO in the negative reaction many features have previously received. I always really liked the manner in which the Usability Initiative (which developed the vector skin a few years back) measured their success - the proportion of people who turned on AND continued using new features. If I recall correctly that was the first time the WMF used the beta concept and I believe that the way it was rolled-out was the best practice example of the WMF making a major change in a calm, clearly communicated, responsive way. Interestingly, the things that caused controversy on the day that that program's work became the default were the elements that were added in at the at the last minute and therefore were not part of the Beta - the v.2 logo, the 'collapsed' inter-language links box in the sidebar. -Liam / Wittylama wittylama.com Peace, love metadata ___ Fabrice Florin Product Manager Wikimedia Foundation http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Fabrice_Florin_(WMF) ___ Wikimedia-l mailing list Wikimedia-l@lists.wikimedia.org Unsubscribe: https://lists.wikimedia.org/mailman/listinfo/wikimedia-l, mailto:wikimedia-l-requ...@lists.wikimedia.org?subject=unsubscribe
[Wikimedia-l] Introducing Beta Features
Hi all, We're pleased to announce Beta Features [1], a new program that lets you test new features on Wikipedia and other Wikimedia sites before they are released for everyone. Think of it as a digital laboratory where community members can preview upcoming software and give feedback to help improve them. This special preference page lets designers and engineers experiment with new features on a broad scale, but not in a disruptive manner. Beta Features is ready for testing now on MediaWiki.org [2]. This Thursday, we plan to also deploy it on Wikimedia Commons and MetaWiki. Based on test results, we aim to release it on all wikis worldwide on 21 November, 2013. Here are the first features you can test this week: * Media Viewer — view images in large size or full screen [3] * VisualEditor Formulæ — edit algebra or equations on your pages [4] * Typography Refresh — make text more readable (coming Thursday) [5] Would you like to try out BetaFeatures now? After you log in on MediaWiki.org, a small 'Beta' link will appear next to your 'Preferences'. Click on it to see features you can test, check the ones you want, then click 'Save'. Learn more on the BetaFeatures page. [1] After you've tested Beta Features, please let us know what you think on our discussion page [6] -- or report any bugs on Bugzilla [7]. For technical documentation, visit the BetaFeatures extension page. [8]. You're also welcome to join our IRC office hours chat on Friday, 8 November at 10:30am PST, 18:30 UTC. [9] Beta Features was developed by the Wikimedia Foundation's Design, Multimedia and VisualEditor teams. Along with other developers, we will be adding new features to this experimental program every few weeks. For now, we'd like to thank some key team members who made this project possible: Ed Sanders, Jon Robson, Gergő Tisza, May Galloway, Vibha Bamba, Aaron Schulz, Brion Vibber, Bryan Davis, Chris Steipp, Greg Grossmeier, Keegan Peterzell, Quim Gil, Guillaume Paumier, Erik Moeller, Rob Lanphier, Howie Fung and Tomasz Finc, to name but a few. We're also very grateful to all the community and other team members who helped create this system — and look forward to many more productive collaborations in the future. :) Enjoy, and don't forget to let us know what you think! This is just a heads-up that you'll start seeing a Page information link in the sidebar (under Toolbox) in the coming days on Wikimedia wikis. It is deployed now to a few wikis already. This Page information link leads to a newly reimplemented info action: https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Main_Pageaction=info Many, many years ago, the info action was added to MediaWiki, but due to performance issues, it was quickly disabled by default and was mostly forgotten about. This year, with the wonderful help of Madman, Krenair, and others, we have reimplemented the info action to provide an information dashboard of sorts about a particular page title to users. This dashboard includes a variety of metadata about the page, including the page's protection status, length, default categorization sort key, internal page ID, templates used on the page, and more. The content is somewhat dynamic: for some pages it will omit certain irrelevant fields and for some users (such as administrators), certain additional fields (such as the number of page watchers) will be displayed. This will slowly allow for the deprecation of outside tools that currently provide information of this nature. The hope is that this action will evolve over time to become a valuable resource for users. If you can think of data points that are missing from the current action's output or have other ideas to improve the info action (it desperately needs a little design love), please feel free to e-mail this list or file a bug at https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/. Re: [Wikimedia-l] AFT5: what practical benefits has it had?
Hi Phoebe, Thanks for your good questions and insights about of Article Feedback 5. Dario and Oliver have answered a couple of your questions below, but I wanted to give you a quick overview on where we are with this new editor engagement tool. We are now collecting fresh data to track how many readers who post feedback go on to make productive edits, which is one of our key objectives for this project. We are also analyzing moderation data to evaluate the usefulness of the feedback, which is another important goal, though harder to track accurately. Lastly, we are enhancing our automated filters to reduce the workload for editors, as well as re-factoring our code to make this extension scale better. We plan to have more information to share in a couple weeks, once all the new data have been collected and analyzed, and new tools deployed. At that point, we will share our findings widely, so we can all have more informed discussions on how to best use this engagement tool. In the meantime, I've added a couple clarifications inline below. Thanks again for your interest, and I look forward to continuing this discussion very soon! I had read about the blind tests in https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Research:Article_feedback/Quality_assessment before but I see some major changes in the graphs, which are a bit hard to understand. 1) In Daily moderation actions (percentage) there's a huge spike of helpful/unhelpful after C (July), did those flags even exist before? Or did helpfulness increase after wider usage according to the finding «the average page receives higher quality feedback than pages picked for their popularity/controversial topic»? (There's no change between 5 and 10 % though.) *They did; the spike is most probably caused by a deployment from 0.6 percent of articles to 5 percent of articles, with a resulting ooh, shiny! Lets take a look reaction. the spike actually follows the 5% deployment combined with the CentralNotice announcement (see annotation D in the first plot), the latter is almost certainly what caused the spike Also note that up until September 6, users were able to moderate their own feedback, which caused a slight increase in the number of 'helpful ratings on the feedback page dashboard ( http://toolserver.org/~dartar/fp/ ). So we really should be paying more attention to the data collected after this date, even though the overall pattern doesn't appear significantly different from earlier this summer. 2) Unique daily articles with feedback moderated shows a spike and then a stabilization, but I don't know what the graphs actually is about. For instance, can feedback be moderated per article (feedback semi/full protection or so) or only per item, etc. We now have a feature that allows administrators to disable the feedback form for controversial articles, as part of the 'protect' tool. However, it was recently deployed and may not be in wide use yet. Do you know if moderation happens on the same articles and if stricter moderation increases helpfulness of feedback also on non-moderated articles? *So, I believe it means the number of distinct articles which have had feedback moderated that day, regardless of whether people use the article-specific page or the centralised page, but I'm not sure - some clarification from Dario would be awesome :). Ditto your other questions, particularly on the distribution of articles. what Oliver said, we are not keeping track of the source of moderation activity at the moment but I agree it would be a very important piece of data to analyze. After consulting with Fabrice, I've opened this ticket on bugzilla so we can assess the effort needed to implement this via the logging table: https://bugzilla.wikimedia.org/show_bug.cgi?id=41061 Dario Also, not to state the obvious, but 'helpful' feedback in and of itself doesn't mean the article changed for the better; I've marked plenty of feedback 'helpful' without doing anything further about it. Yes, Phoebe, you are absolutely right. Marking an article as helpful is a good way to bring up a good suggestion to the attention of other editors, but it does not mean that the comment has been used to edit the article. However, it makes it easier for editors to find comments that can help them improve the article. Over the two months following wider deployment, about 35% of the feedback was found useful by moderators. This finding seems consistent with our earlier estimate of usefulness, based

[Wikimedia-l] Updated Terms of Use
Kudos to the community and WMF teams for creating this outstanding document! I love the brevity, clarity -- and yes, elegance -- of your human-readable summary. I'm amazed that you managed to fit our most important goals, rights and responsibilities into just 12 bullet points. It's an inspiring achievement, which I will seek to emulate in my own work. I want to congratulate you and your department on NOT doing this. The new terms of use are written in clear English, well set out, and cover what seem to be the appropriate bases without being overly verbose and cautious. Well done, Philippe, Geoff, and everyone else. I am also impressed. It actually ends up being the best one piece introduction to what Wikimedia *is* that I have ever read. A lot of thought and consideration were soundly invested in that document. Clarity on that level is HARD, but well worth the effort. I also am thinking that the staff have just set a rather high bar for the board. Imagine if all board resolutions were written with as just as much focus on clarity and as on circumspection. These terms of use show it is possible.
